I got called a brat the other day, apparently there are good brats and bad brats and I was called a brat in an affectionate way, thats fine but seriously if i get one more label to apply to myself im gonna need a tattoo to remember them all.

I also find it interesting that so many people will automatically dismiss me as someone "not worth the bother" and "not good enough for me" because I label myself a brat.
Ignorance is bliss.

how can you blame others for something you are?
IF people dislike brats, then they do. Doesn't mean they hate you..they propably just don't want to have a brad serve them.
PErhaps you should blame your fellow brads..for beeing pain in the asses..lol

I acted like a brat once with my Sir.  I also received my first punishment for it.  Needless to say, I do not act like a brat with Him anymore.... I didn't like the punishment, but I hated upsetting Him!
If one continues to act bratty, it's my opinion that they are acting out for some unknown reason and it should be addressed and stopped!

Well I think there is a difference between being bratty and being spirited.. A spirited submissive makes a scene more fun for some, but knows the difference in pushing the Dominant too far. Brats can be fun, but sometimes they can be irritating. It just takes patience and alot of communication, like any relationship. I would never want to break a submissives spirit, but I could see breaking a paddle on a brat.. hahaha :)
anyways just depends on what kind of brat we are talking here..

Glad to see that someone else also understand that there are several kinds of brats.....

I realize that for someone I waved a red cloth when I used the word "real" to differentiate between people who are real-life brats without any desire to be taken to task for it and no desire what so ever to be associated with this lifestyle and the people that label themselves brats in a BDSM context. It's almost as taboo as saying "twue", I know.

Someone also asked me if it was something like the difference between a "real slave" and a "BDSM slave"
I haven't had the time to raise my social antennas this early in the morning, so I really couldn't tell if they were pulling my leg or not. Something in it stirred my bullshit-radar though, so I'll ask if you really don't think there is a difference? I'm sorry if I misunderstood you.

I also think Focus50 has a pretty good idea about all of this.

Focus is a pretty sharp guy; so's Raven.

Anyway. Words mean things. They mean different things, to different people. A slave, to me, is one that is owned, and has no say so. About anything, from the mundane, to the most extreme. To me, no one here (even those that are respected and hold a place in my heart) is a slave.

A brat, to me, is someone that is disrespectful. Are there brats in BDSM? Oh, yes, indeed. And not all of them are submissives.

Now, there are those that call themselves "brats" that to me, do not truly fit that word. To me, they're playful. They do not disrespect, and if their dominants say "enough", then they obey. Promptly. If their dominants tell them a certain act or behaviour is not okay, they obey. Sometimes, it takes a while to reach that place, of obeying, without pushing. Each person has to decide if that progression, and the time it may take, is worth it.

Bottom line: if you and yours are happy with one another, let'er rip.

Ah, it was you who said that, I just couldn't remember when I sat there writing the post:)
In light of how you define slave, I would say yes, the difference between a real brat and a BDSM brat is very much like the difference between a real slave and a BDSM slave.
The description you give of the playful brats is pretty similar to my defintion of a brat, in this context :)

I wonder if for a DOm(me) it matters if some one is a real brad or a vanilla brad. We wan't a sub/slave to obey....not to make a fulltime job to make our lifes hard..lol
but a bit of teasing is nice..and needs to be (in my case)

Would that be a "vanilla brad nailer"??

Sorry, it's early, and I'm being goofy.

Ahhh bratiness .... I consider myself to be more defiant than anything ... more or less.  But not unwilling to submit ... I just want to be forced to do so...

Last week, I was feeling irked and PMS-y and cranky and wanted Daddy to talk with me about some stuff I wasn't happy with.  He said, "Now is not the time, we'll talk tomorrow."  I stepped in front of my bedroom door and said, "Oh yes it is!  We're talking now."  He looked at me with "that look" and said, "I know you must have gone crazy right about now."  I gave Him a mean stare, crossed my arms, and said, "Crazy like a fox!"  He looked me in my eyes and said, "You need to move and I mean now."  I was not happy, but He wasn't playing, so I just grabbed Him around the neck and giggled.  He started laughing and said, "You're a nut.  I love you."  I smiled, kissed His cheek, and said, "I know."

*whew*   Brat-attack aborted just in time...

And there it is - exactly what you don't get with passive "dominance"!   Easier for some to just brand you a brat or (gasp) unsubmissive and point to the kerb.

And you're a redhead, too....!  <swoon>

I can relate Daddysredhead I am can be pretty playful and feisty sometimes just like that. Also Master sometimes will find it cute or sometimes he will find it annoying, it depends on his mood. If he is in a bad mood then I made a nig mistake in being playful.
