"We vote? What does that mean? It means that we choose between two bodies of real, though not avowed, autocrats. We choose between Tweedledum and Tweedledee."

If you're going to vote at all, write in Ron Paul. He's a rare exception to the rule. Any other candidate will just give us more of the same... possibly to a somewhat greater or lesser degree.

Dear Keira,

Votes may change things or , perhaps not. An informed electorate can be a powerful force for change. However, no matter which party is in power, you, yourself, are not powerless. Yes, you and so many of us have formidable obstacles and challenges. However, this being the U.S., we also have opportunities that most in the rest of the world do not. For example: I work with a man who is a Cuban "balsero". He came to this country 8 years ago , on a reft, with nothing but the clothes on his back. In Cuba, he had an M.D. and worked as a physician. Here, he became a massage therapist ( and a damn good one). He now owns his own home, brought his parents from Cuba and bought them a home. He also owns 2 cabins in the mountains of north Georgia which he and his family use from time to time. The rest of the time, the cabins are rented out and he actually turns a profit on them. He has $$ in the bank, great credit and drives a nice, though modest, new vehicle. His story is just one of many that I know of that are similar.

In this country,  where there is a will, there is usually a way. You will never get ahead by working for wages or a salary. Or by living in consumer debt. Get creative and put that to work for you. You are obviously an intelligent woman. Make it work for you and your family.

Best Wishes to you.

The reason I wrote this, is because I’ve been sitting here wondering who I should vote for; if I should vote; and if not, then what; because I can’t ignore the fact that something needs to be done.

'Two sides to this coin.

If you vote, you're effectively propping up the current system as you're only going to get one type of government - the type subservient to corporate interests (with a slight variation on the level of interventionism).

If you don't vote, you're effectively disenfranchising yourself.

So many people are disillusioned with the democratic process, here. Around 50% turned out at the last election.

Are you wasting your time and energy when voting? can you possibly hope to change the system?

Would you vote for someone with this opinion about "they" and "them"? Are you a "them"? Who does this candidate identify and define thier "us"?

Hello, my name is, irrelevant. I have come here today, to talk to those of you who may not know of people like me.

Hi, Irrelevant.  My name is unsympathetic truth.  I do know 'people like you,' at least from a strictly financial point of view.  The thread title is ironic, since it seems you only want to shift the finger of blame to a more distant place.  Bad news.  It doesn't matter one bit who you vote for.  The point of blame that matters are the three fingers that point back at you.

The situation you describe is entirely the result of the choices you have made, whether the results were what you wanted, or plain old unintended consequences of things that seemed like a good idea at the time.  No change of elected official is going to change the things you decide are priorities for spending what you earn.  No shift of power in Congress will shift your expectations of life and lifestyle.

'Sounds harsh. I think the OP clearly acknowledges mistakes, and is simply trying to work out her thoughts on the democratic process.

My father once said (as we were discussing how nice it would be Jed Bartlett were an actualy candidate):
Those would do best in the White House are the ones who tend to stay at local levels where they can actually do good things... those who seek the white house seek power.

Who's Jed Bartlett?

The West Wing (god I miss that show)

Never heard of it.
It must have been on one of the "Networks" CBS, NBC, ABC?
I watch Public t.v., History Channel, A&E, Nat Geo, Cnn.
And being an Independant I do have a "liberal" side!
I believe in gay marriage, legalisation of M.J., National Healthcare for all (It's not "socialised medicine" if we're paying for it through our taxes!)
I'm against all these "Trade Deals" and "Globalisation" and I can't stand that idiot-and that's being kind, Bush.
And as for my "conservative" side I don't like the govt spending us into oblivion!
We need a LOT less "foreign relations!"
I'm a "fiscal" conservative.
I don't believe in *any* type of "foreign aid."

You should vote. If you don't vote then you have no right to complain about what happens

This seems to be a common belief, one I hear numerous people claim, over and over and over.

The thing is, the choice isn't just about which candidate to choose; one still has a choice whether to choose at all.

I think that if one truly feels that no candidate is any good, one has the right to abstain from voting--

--and such action is every bit as valid a choice as casting a vote for a candidate one believes in, or believes to be the lesser of two  or more evils, or whatever.

If one has taken the time to discover that each of the available candidates would be a bad choice, then I think that one might be right to feel obligated not to vote.

And if the field of candidates really is so bad that one cannot in good conscience vote for any of them, then I think one has a very legitimate complaint, indeed!

Yep, if that is the perception you want to take.  I know people who live in million dollar homes and complain about the cost of utilities, or drive a luxury SUV and bitch about the price of a brake job.  The glass being described by the OP sounds a lot better than half-full to me.

The D. ticket would probably better suit the pessimistic outlook.

Cjan, not for me, for you if you lean that way.
But seriously, what business is it of mine or anyone else's if two men or two women want to get married?
It doesn't affect me so why would I be against it?
If two people are in love and it makes them happy then great!
I have no problem with gay people at all, they're just like us except for their sexual preferances.
So, you want to be my "gay friend?"

TheHeretic,

Are you a politician? If not, perhaps you missed your calling.

You don’t know me, period. You think you know parts of my life, but the truth is; you can’t even be sure I’m telling the truth.

Don’t feel bad, it seems there is a very large group of people that feel the same as you.

Many of them also believe, not only that they “know” things they cant, but that someone whom they have never met; couldn’t give two shits about them; and most likely never will, would make a good master.

Or hell, that they could have liberty and law, at the same time.

People with that kind of thinking astound me.

Truth: neither sympathetic, nor unsympathetic; it just is.
