When people capitalize their "Master" and lowercase their "me" that is never an issue for me. The S/slash stuff is just annoying. Usually, if there is a great deal of it in the post, I will just not bother reading the post because it becomes too tiresome to do so.

I'm also with WickedKev and and fastlane on the aLtErNaTing stuff. Totally annoying. Then again, when someone has written with so much poor grammar and spelling that I spend more time trying to figure out what they are trying to say than actually reading it, I have a problem with that as well.

The funny part about it is that most who do it think they are being "respectful" yet, the majority of readers say it is annoying.

As for me, I try to type using proper grammar spelling and punctuation all the time. Just habit from all the writing I do, that it wouldn't occur to me to start writing poorly out of respect.

Uhhh Bear.... better get out the ole Bible... it was the Red Sea not the Dead Sea. If it was the Dead Sea they could have walked across on top :)

Yeah so it was .. <huge grin> However it was the Dead Sea after it drowned all those Egyptians though...

Just shows doesn't it.. Bible?? I don't have Bible, I have a copy of the Tora and a copy of the Old Testiment in Hebrew, The Tibetan Book of the Dead, The Egyptian Book of The Dead, The Red Book of Appin and the Codices Venifica, will any of those do?

Using that / when typing drives me crazy. My eyes can't take it either..Also, not using proper grammar can turn me off quicker than anything else, anyone can do. I do try hard to use correct spelling and grammar. If I have a mistake, it's because I am tired or a bit lazy..lol!

Whoever started the / (slash) thing, should be punished!!!

The explanation I was given for 3rd person speaks is as follows: A slave I know said she was told to do this by her previous online Master. He wanted her to think very carefully about what she said to anyone.

This developed in the online community, since using capitalizations on names and pronouns was limited, in many online venues, to dominants only, and submissive individuals were required to use lower-case letters for their names. Some individual down the road (probably a submissive individual) got reamed for making a mass greeting and not properly greeting the dominant individuals in a way that was recognizeably separate from those who were submissive individuals, yet that person -still- didn't want to do separate greetings, and developed the "Y/you" thing as a way to differentiate between those who were submissive and those who were dominant in mass publication.

It caught on, I think, because in the online world, so many people insist on their "status" being recognized, so it made people feel good to be set apart and recognized, and the process went on and on.

In German, all nouns are capitalized -- not just proper nouns. That takes some getting used to for most of us. In the same way, the online community "got used" to seeing those types of terms used, and they became sort of a standard.

To me, I much prefer to see proper grammer, punctuation, capitalization and spelling used, though I will also use capitals for emphasis at times (including when I capitalize things as archetypes). The slashed capital/lower-case thing, to me, is unnecessary and annoying, and I don't promote it among any of our servants who happen to participate in groups online. (We also use 3rd person speech in our household, but if a servant is under that restriction, he or she does not participate online while it is in place, except to post in an electronic journal if that is the agreed-upon form of journaling. Personally, I still prefer my servants to use paper journals, but flexibility prevails among our leadership, and some of the guides like getting the journals online. *shrugs*)

My sub did the uppercase/lowercase thing when we first met online. I thought it was silly, - in fact I think it makes it harder to read the message. So I asked her stop. - and I still find it silly :-)

I think it shows extra respect to type with proper grammar, punctuation and capitalization, in a font that is easily readable.

I totally approve of the U/l designations in conversing online. For Me it sets the tone and incorporates the practice by extending it to all aspects of communication. it is a tweak to the courtesy and submission shown to a Dominant by his/her submissive/slave counterpart. I'm a stickler for protocol with My pets and expect the respect. I'm a lifestyle Domina so I'm not just play-acting: this is how I live.

As far as I can tell, it first got used in old print personal adds. You know the kind. The ones that use "SWF" instead of "Single White Female". Since these adds were paid for by the word there were all kinfd so shortcuts to cut down on the costs. So instead of "seeks female top to male bottom relationship" you got "seeks F/m".

From personal adds it went to BBS. From BBS to IRC. From IRC to the rest of the net.
