but how safe is choking?

Unless you have a really decent idea of what your hands are on, and what you might be putting pressure on... its dangerous. The accidental injuries are as formidible as the intentional ones. I have choked Fox, for seconds at a time, and only after having done a lot of studying onn how and wht can be safely touched. I studied this when I was in the martial arts, ore as a way to know where I could effectively hit someone in the throat to damage but not kill. There are an amazing number of highly dangerous spots.
Ifts very exciting, can be very erotic, but can also be taking far more of a risk than you care to be doing.

As DV said.. only seconds at a time.. I have never choked wolf to unconsciousness, we play more on the lines of the psychological when it comes to breath play.  Usually.  I won't tell you that I haven't done it for a longer period of time, but I will tell you that I can count on one hand how many times I have actually put pressure on his throat for more than a couple of seconds.

I once had a friend of mine hold my nose and cover my mouth with his while he "breathed for me" for a moment... it was a rather interesting experience.

puddles knows.. this is just a posting on the internet and lots of information to consume.. but how safe is choking? puddles understands there are risks associated, and that it's a bit of edge play, but exactly how dangerous is this activity?

Apparently it can be done fairly safely by some people.... while others seem to cause a lot more harm playing with it...might want to consider why.

Spectral analysis of electroencephalography changes after choking in judo (juji-jime).
Author: Rau R , Raschka C , Brunner K , Banzer W
Source: Med Science Sports Exercise, 30(9): 1356-62 1998
Abstract: PURPOSE: The present study was carried out to investigate possible electroencephalographic changes induced by choking in judo (shime-waza) by means of spectral analysis and brain mapping. METHODS: Power spectral changes in Electroencephalography (EEG) were recorded in six experienced judoka who underwent a choking trial with a "shime-waza choking" technique called juji-jime. RESULTS: A significant increase of global field power in the delta- and theta-range occurred, while physiological alpha-power decreased. These changes in the low-frequency range reached a statistically significant level within a time span up to 20 s after choking, which was performed at an average choking time of 8 s. In no case did choking provoke neuropsychological symptoms. Yet, spectral EEG-analysis revealed subclinical changes of brain function. CONCLUSIONS: Choking in judo may induce subclinical electroencephalographic perturbations. The extent and duration can be objectified by means of spectral analysis of EEG data, global field power computation, and brain-mapping representation.

Hmmmm   the worst is noted above,  not fatal but permanently veged .

On rare occasions,  the trachea can collapse with a fracture and then it doesnt matter much whether CPR  or even bagging is done, the swelling will be internal in the airway and it closes off.

Only a very few of breath players are also involved in healthcare and believe they can intubate with a tube when such disasters occur.
Unless you know how to do the tracheotomy,  you might want to give it additional thought.

Having said all that,  the amazing thing is that many who do this find their orgasmic stimultion to be incredibly intense.  They become addicted.

Hope you can get by with some other form of play.
Best of Bondage to you.

I had this, too. "interesting" is a mild description. It scared the piss out of me. I not only didn't have an orgasm, I lost all arousal.

The same thing happened when he tried to smother me. These two incidents led to our breakup because he had absolutely no idea what he was doing.

pip, I can breathe for myself, thank you

First rule, if Jay Wiseman says it, it's wrong.  So ignore everything he says.

Now, as far as choking.  The key is to control the compression.  Hands are really bad for that because they don't provide even control.  The fingers one hand may be doing nothing while the other hand is doing severe damage but your brain may literally not know at that point what each hand is doing.  It is really very difficult to strangle someone to death quickly, even with garrotte so that is not likely to happen unless you do a hanging scene and something really goes wrong.  You get lots of warnings first.  But other things can go wrong and you don't want her to pass out because that means that the brain cells are dying and if too many of them die over a period of time you have a sub with alzheimers.  (Of course with some of these folks it is hard to tell...)

The best method is to tie the sub with her back to a post, put a rope around her neck a couple times and knot it.  Then put a stick through the rope behind the post.  Gently tightening the stick causes constriction but also gives very good control so you can get just enough compression to be scarey but not enough to actually do damage.  The important thing is to be very gentle in using the stick.  You don't want to accidently crush the windpipe.

Do this right and not only will you have lots of fun with your victim but you will have the added joy of watching the Wisemanites flee from the dungeon screaming in terror.
