OK Firm, quoting someone who writes for the Daily Mirror is basically the same as quoting a xenophobic redneck who shits in his pants and thinks its his neighbour that stinks. It's nothing more than an arse-wipe rag.

I like this quote though ," I note a global survey on optimism: 61 percent of Americans were optimistic about the future, 29 percent of the French, 15 percent of Germans. Take it from a foreigner: In my experience, Americans are the least "bitter" people in the developed world. Secular, gun-free big-government Europe doesn't seem to have done anything for people's happiness.

Some would say that being optimistic while bogged down in an imperial war with no end in sight and the economy going belly up, while other countries are taking the US less and less seriously, is not a sign of happiness but a sign of increasing senility.

As for secular gun free big governement Europe hasn't done anything for people's happiness. I don't think the average European has such a shallow view of life though we do have more than our fair share of shallow people. The average European doesn't take what the Americans call the pursuit of happiness very seriously, people are far more complex than that.

I think Obama's comments will be what loses him the Presidency, if he becomes the Democratic nominee.

We're a long way from the elections, and this is already old news.  I'm guessing that unless Obama really does badly tonight in PA, we've heard the last of it.  McCain could surely bring it up if Obama is the D nominee, but since he's already weighed in on it and by that time it will be something that happened eons ago in political time, I'd guess that he'll leave it alone.  Bringing it up would surely delight some in his camp, but it would have a high back-fire potential.  If the media grabbed on to it, the story wouldn't be Obama's comments which they've already covered to death, it would be why McCain is bringing it up months later.  There may be some organization that puts together an "issue ad", but I think that after the swiftboat stuff that's more likely to energize D voters, and I suspect that there will be more of that stuff on both sides this time around.

There will surely be more comments from the presidential hopefuls and/or their staff that will cause media storms and public outrage.  By the time we get to November, there will have been so many of these outrages that most of us will be good and sick of the whole thing and not really care much who wins as long as it's over.  Maybe we'll get so sick of it that we actually start looking at the substance of our candidates rather than reacting to ads, but I can't really see that happening.

 Right now,today,Mr. Obama is out-raising McCain 4 o 1 in donations.

Though I`m sure there are big private donors as well as big corporate donors,Mr Obama is getting many many small donations, averaging about 99 bucks.

It`s the sheer volume  and number of donations ,that`s making this so lopsided.

Another point to consider, the core voting block/supporters/donors of Mr.Obama ,don`t have land-line phones(for the most part) and don`t show up in traditional polls. The poll numbers aren`t accurate.
Considering "operation chaos" and other republican spoiler tactics and shenanigans, the polls can`t be relied on.

The avalanche of small private donations to him are evidence of real voter support.I don`t see neo-cons sending Barack money, in order to skew the race. They may register to vote in a democratic primary or say they`re voting democratic to a phone pollster, but they`re not sending him money, lol, that`s for sure.

I've obviously got too much time on my hands and read the whole rant and laughed at the following paragraph which doesn't have one correct fact in it, though I do understand the idiot was ranting rather than being reasoned. I wonder if the writer has ever been to Europe because it doesn't sound like he has.

Europeans did "vote for their own best interests" – i.e., cradle-to-grave welfare, 35-hour workweeks, six weeks of paid vacation, etc. – and as a result they now face a perfect storm of unsustainable entitlements, economic stagnation and declining human capital that's left them so demographically beholden to unassimilable levels of immigration that they're being remorselessly Islamized with every passing day. We should thank God (forgive the expression) that America's loser gun nuts don't share the same sophisticated rational calculation of "their best interests" as do Thomas Frank, Obama, too many Democrats and the European political establishment.

Anyway, he seems to suggest that Europeans are stupid for voting in their own best interests which sort of gives an insight into what he thinks of Americans, that they are smart for not voting for their own best interests. (I guess he was talking about gun toting rednecks there[:D])

Weeeell excuuuse meee! Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't voting for your own best interests supposed to be smart?

At a time when Germany exports more manufactured products than the US and the European economies are relatively strong (with the exception of Britain which copies the US), I think the writer has his head up his arse.

Any, the writer admits to supporting Bush so that's an admission to the lack of intellectual insight into the world and having a preconceived idea that bears no relation to reality.

Tell me, does it feel like you are paddling in quicksand?

See Wikipedia's WHAT'S WRONG WITH KANSAS.

"Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius, a liberal Democrat who is a native of Ohio, was able to win in conservative Kansas. By emphasizing issues like health care, school funding, and avoiding the hot-button social issues, Sebelius successfully fractured the Kansas GOP and won a clear majority."

Will Obama be able to do the same or will the red state faithful follow KY's mole-hill concerns and sensibilities?

The writer which FKY quotes suggests that Americans don't vote in their own best interest and now you point out a book where the writer has recognized this phenomenon. Perhaps the change Obama is talking about is that ordinary Americans will start to vote for their own best interests instead of big business and their military buddies.

I don't even know or care who this person is because if they want to critize Americans, they need to do it over there.  I don't tell England how to live.
Now, I have changed my mind 3 times in this election so far and they have not made it to the convention.
Right now, I am on McCain's side.  I don't like him, but he is the lesser or the two evils.
We need to redefine the Democratic party.  It is no longer what is was designed to be for the little guy.  It is for the rich just like the oil hungry monsters out there.
I say spray paint the White House.

Class consciousness in the USA has changed with the decline of labor unions.

The working man's consciousness: affordable wages, good schools, decent housing, and a belief in a progressive tax system --- has been gutted in favor of "hot button" cultural issues: guns, patriotism, gays, abortion, and xenophobia.

As FKY suggests, Obama needs to navigate these potholes skillfully --- else they act as a sniper bullet to his campaign.

Its an example of molehill politics. Sadly, the American media follows this ridiculous agenda setting as well.

Americans live in a system where marital infidelity is a impeachable offense (when lied about) and war crimes are excusable.

Amerika is indeed a concept, an ideal, a goal, but Amerikans are not. Americans have cultural characteristics that are as evident and observable as do Germans or Italians or Mexicans.

My travels have led me to understand that American Exceptionalism is a flawed ideology.

This is slightly off-topic, but lately I find myself agreeing with most of your posts, CloudBoy. I like agreement. I really do...

[;)]

I'm going to ditto the post you made that included the above quote. Everything was spot on. The political climate we find ourselves in is deplorable. The overall political knowledge and the reasoning skills possessed by the electorate is simply appalling. The level of discourse in the media is of absolutely no help except to maintain the status quo.
