ORIGINAL: meatcleaver Yours will definitely be destroyed before Europe is destroyed again. That will happen during your inevitable war with China. Your military is already planning for it.[;)] You come at this from the position of being "enlightened" or perhaps even just better people ... blah, blah, blah ... different day, same old story. You have this inner feeling that you somehow "know" Americans, based on a brother that lives in California and a few vacations you took, including conversations in a bar. I stake my position on a lot of very competitive nations, living in very close proximity ... and a long history of answering interior European problems with warfare. I don't claim to know Europeans, even though I have a relative that lives there, and have vacationed there ... I'm just looking at history, under the absolute reality that people really don't change all that much. Most European wars were not between nations so much as wars between ruling families that have long since been replaced, the twentieth century being something of an exception where the wars were about political ideologies, all which have no credibility left. The past is not the future and have many people of the older generation pointed out, if there had been as much personal travel and as much exchange of infomation by ordinary people at the beginning of the 20th century as now, the wars wouldn't have been allowed to happen. As for people not changing much, I think that is true and most people given the truth and it is hard to hide the truth in Europe now with so many different national TV and newpapers at hand, it isn't long before a politician is known to be lying(Britain being something of an exception). Most people in Europe knew Bush and Blair were lying to his teeth which was why just about everyone was hostile to the Iraqi war. I don't base my opinion on knowing Americans (though experience does inform me somewhat) but on the fact that America is an ideological state and as such, needs an ideological enemy. There is always some bogeyman being cooked up in the US, China is just the latest and potentially the most dangerous.
