I'm really happy so far with my Ford Five Hundred.  Roomy, peppy and good on gas.

Of course, they have since slapped the Taurus nameplate back on the new ones....

My car will always be an SUV.  If you've ever been in an accident then you know why.  I drove away without a dent.  She was totaled with all kinds of pretty colored liquids spewing out of her engine.  Well worth the price of the gas.

KCherry -> RE: Gas!! What will be your next Vehicle? (4/29/2008 11:46:07 AM)

 I would never drive an SUV because they are actually less safe due to the tip over factor, high profile with smaller wheel base, but I do agree with having a large car, that is why I always buy a police crown victoria. It too saved my life when I was 7 months pregnant and got into a high speed collision. The price I am paying for high gas is that I am going to have to share my car as we can no longer afford the gas and insurance on two cars. -.-;

With luck, I won't need another car again. If the Volvo dies (which is hardly likely, it's an 88 with 150K and still in excellent shape), I'll go with something super-economical for running my errands. Might get a bicycle, too, for short non-cargo trips (Post Office, etc.).

The Benz I will keep forever.

We have two...a little economy job (his) and an Explorer (the mom-mobile). If we had to trade one in it would be for the same type.

A ninja... but less expensive than this one, I think,

I'm holding out for when I can afford a Tesla. Totally impractical as an everyday driver but so much fun to think about owning.

I am at a standstill myself after filling up two trucks last week at a staggering 150.00,The pain is that we have to have trucks around the farm..my buddy has a little 4 cylinder and gets great mileage, maybe for just running chores for the mail, grocery store one of those would be ok...

Don't get overconfident just because you're in a bigger vehicle. I have a friend who drives a tiny little geo who once flipped an SUV in a wreck. If their bumper is lower than yours is they will flip you in a head on collision.

I'd like to own a little hybrid diesel one day, so I can use biofuel, but it will be a long time before I have the $$ to buy one.

I drive a '97 Nissan Hardbody (last year for that model) and I love it.  It almost has 90,000 miles on it.  I have never had any problems with it, and it still looks new.  Trust me, that truck has taken a beating over the last 11 years.  It's a sturdy, dependable little truck.  I can get around 28-30 miles to the gallon in it.  It costs me about 35 bucks to fill it up, and I do that about every two weeks.

I have wanted to buy a Jeep.  But I have resisted the temptation to do so.  I don't really need it, and everyone tells me they are a pain in the ass to own and maintain.  So depending on my lifestyle (I'm single with no UM's.), I will probably buy another compact pickup.  Unfortunately, only Toyota and Ford still sell them in the U.S.  I have heard that Toyota and Ford are planning on quitting the compact pickup market here.  Everyone else has stopped and switched to midsize models.  But gasoline prices being what they are, that may change.  I will just have to wait and see when I decide to buy something else.  Which, I doubt will be anytime soon.

don't drive, don't plan on learning anytime soon :) the bus and my feet work just fine for me.

rubberpet -> RE: Gas!! What will be your next Vehicle? (4/29/2008 1:54:37 PM)

I have an '06 Volvo S60 R and I love it.  Volvos are not only the safest cars on the road, mine is particularly cool.  A 345 HP inline-5 with a K&N air filter and I'm getting close to 30 mpg on the interstate at 70 mph!  I can hit over 35 mpg on regular highways.

I wouldn't trade this car for any other car or truck on the road.  It's official...I'm a Volvo guy!

~FR~  Honda Fit
http://automobiles.honda.com/fit/price.aspx?Model=GD3748EW

Currently driving a 2000 Nissan Sentra getting approx 24-25 MPG city, up to 33 MPG Highway when I take the occasional long trip .  ("It's your turn to visit Mom who lives 1100 miles away!")
Hard to make a decision since the Fit is a good price (under $15K) and seems to be an excellent car as to safety, style, price...but I have a paid off car with less than 65,000 miles on it.  I am currently opting for the "no car payment" plan which means that I will not be buying a new car unless I meet a very generous philanthropist, win the lottery or have a dire emergency.  Yes, not just an emergency, but a dire emergency!  [;)]
I have also considered a golf cart for a second vehicle if practicality dictates a second vehicle for around town.  I live in a small community and I like the idea of plugging in and using something like that for errands.  My boy has a 1989 Ford Truck, all paid for, of course.  Great for hauling, but atrocious on gas mileage (12-14MPG) so it is driven much less.  The Nissan is used for trips over the hill into a nearby suburb for shopping, Doctor appointments, etc., when necessary, and the truck is used for convenience around town and for the occasional haul.
It's hard to give up the idea of no car payment.

My potential future car list recently increased a bit. "Previously," I was planning to save up for a couple of years, driving the one I have, and then buy a brand new Mustang GT, adding a few 'special' customizations in the process.

Then, I figured that was a little pricey gas-wise to drive to work everyday so I thought I'd add the Honda DN-01 motorcycle for a 'daily driver,' thus saving the Mustang for "fun weekend driving."

However I recently stumbled upon the Chevy Volt. This is an interesting machine. It can go about 640 miles on one 12-gallon tank. Or, if you don't drive more than 40 miles in a stretch - no gas at all. It runs on an electric motor. The gas 'generator' is only there for charging the battery if it drops below 30%. So, if your commute is less than 40 miles round trip, you never actually use the gas. You just plug it in at night and you're good. I'm watching this one with great interest as it gets closer to it's 2010 (fall of '09) release date.

As for the comment on SUV's....I will NEVER own one of those. They are vastly un-neccessary and unsafe. The flipping aspect is just one problem. They are easy to roll to, depending on the model. And in today's suburban world, they are just not needed.

As far as safety goes, I had a lil Honda until last year when it was totalled in a wreck on the freeway. All I got was a scratch on my arm. Not only that, but the car actually went up in value. I had $17K left on it to pay....and the insurance company gave me just over $19. Talk about a good investment.

Personally, after a wreck, I'd rather the car be totalled, so long as it gives its 'life' to save mine. Cars just aren't the same after a wreck. For example: the car I got after my wreck was the same make, model and year as the one I'd previously had. But something felt "wrong." My service tech later confirmed the car had indeed been wrecked before. Of course I promptly made the dealer swap it out for a different car that had not been wrecked, since I explicitly asked them if that one had, and they lied to my face.

Frankly, I feel safer in my Benz than my Volvo. Solid. About 4000 pounds.
