When I go for cross state trips, I switch my rear sprocket, my bikes accelerates slower but  gets even better gas mileage on the highway.

Wow, that seems like a big pain in the ass... hope you're swapping on a touring-compound tire at the same time... save you a lot more money on the long road.

I want a full electric vehicle. I've been eyeballing them for years. I only work maybe 5-10 miles away from home and I drive fairly cautiously, so I am not overly concerned about the impact of a car crash.

I am not at all aggressive behind the wheel, I save it all for the CM forums!

=)

Pretty easy put bike on rear stand loosen rear axle, pull the wheel change sprocket throw wheel back on.
I always use sport-touring tires on my street bike, the knee dragging is reserved for the track, there I use the $$$ tires.

Being the sarcastic little wench I am, and possessing exotic critter permits, I think a CAMEL would make a nice statement.

This is a question I've been giving some thought to for a while.  Perhaps someone will have a good suggestion to look into?  My purchase will not be based on what is fashionable.  I currently drive a mid-90's Subaru wagon.  It has served me very well, but I want better mileage than I'm getting.

I live in a sprawling desert.  Very little stop-and-go city driving, my commute is 70-80 mph on the freeway, home and work are both convenient to the on/off ramps.  High winds are the norm here, typically a crosswind on the freeway with common gusts of 30-40 mph.  I am not a small person, I will not own something that forces me into an uncomfortable driving position.  I need to be able to take both passengers and cargo, say a wife, two dogs, and a weekend worth of camping gear.  I dearly love a twisty mountain road, but I'm not going to make sporty performance a need.

At least every few months, I wind up driving some distance on dirt roads, often in bad shape.  I need something durable enough not to break halfway down 5 miles of washboard hardpan.  I am not a gearhead.  I intend to buy a car, not a project.  I will be spending less than $15,000, almost certainly buying used.

TH: I dunno the kind of mileage they get, but have you looked into the Forrester (Subaru)? Theyre very roomy inside, you can get the 4WD option, and (as you've seen from Subaru) they hold up pretty damned well.

It's one of the reason's I still ride a bike. 43 miles to the gallon.

If fuel mileage were the only criteria, I'd see if I could find an old '86 Dodge/Plymouth Colt ES that still runs. Damned car ran like gasoline was being rationed. Despite the lackluster performance, even with a manual tranny, it got 45 mpg in the city. On a long-distance run between upstate NY and FL, it got 57 mpg on the south-bound leg.

I have an '06 Volvo S60 R and I love it.  Volvos are not only the safest cars on the road, mine is particularly cool.  A 345 HP inline-5 with a K&N air filter and I'm getting close to 30 mpg on the interstate at 70 mph!  I can hit over 35 mpg on regular highways.

I wouldn't trade this car for any other car or truck on the road.  It's official...I'm a Volvo guy!

Frankly, I feel safer in my Benz than my Volvo. Solid. About 4000 pounds.

Well, my Volvo might not be 4000 pounds, but with a dozen airbags in it, if I ever get hit, I'll be inside a giant inflatable marshmallow!  LOL  I actually passed up buying a Benz to buy my Volvo because I felt it was not only safer to drive since I have a long commute to work, but it had more horsepower, a smoother ride, better styling, and was still cheaper than the Benz I was looking at.  Now that I'm getting really great gas mileage, I'm happy I bought the Volvo.  But hey, that's why people have choices.

No matter what you drive, I hope any car you drive keeps you safe in a time of need. [:)] Auto accidents suck.

Same as always: My next vehicule will be:

a) my feet
b) the bus
c) the tramway
d)( if my back is messing with me again for a  few years and the operation fail ) a wheelchair.

Irishknight -> RE: Gas!! What will be your next Vehicle? (4/30/2008 7:02:24 AM)

Probably a larger truck that will pull a larger horse trailer.  Neccessity prevents me from getting a 100 mpg shoe box that would make everyone else happy.

A VW Polo Blue Motion or the new Smart CDI (it's not a car, it's just something with four wheels ;)).

However I recently stumbled upon the Chevy Volt. This is an interesting machine. It can go about 640 miles on one 12-gallon tank. Or, if you don't drive more than 40 miles in a stretch - no gas at all. It runs on an electric motor. The gas 'generator' is only there for charging the battery if it drops below 30%. So, if your commute is less than 40 miles round trip, you never actually use the gas. You just plug it in at night and you're good. I'm watching this one with great interest as it gets closer to it's 2010 (fall of '09) release date.

First thing I did after I got my Prius was to have a plug in conversion installed. Driving to work and doing short distance errands the engine never comes out of idle unless I accelerate hard for some reason. I fill up about once every two months and it works out to about 100mpg (102 and 97 my last two fillups).

Be aware that on long distance trips your mileage drops off substantially especially if you're unable to plug in at night. I drove back and forth to Indianapolis last summer and got about 50mpg for the trip.

BlackPhx -> RE: Gas!! What will be your next Vehicle? (4/30/2008 11:05:35 AM)

Hybrid trucks are coming out, with all the same pulling power but better gas mileage. Might be worth taking a look at.

Meanwhile Master is watching for the release of the Zenn Highway version sometime late 2008 early 2009. While 25 Mph would get him around town to work and back, highway speeds are more appreciated just in case.  I on the other hand insist that he adds a solar panel just to charge the car at night, he can plug in at work the rest of the time [:D]

Currently we drive a Pontiac Vibe. Larger than a station wagon, Front and Side air  bags, room enough to hold a 8 foot board with the hatch closed, or a 150 lb akita and an 85 lb Chow Cross, me, him and 2 passengers with stabilitrak and antilocks..and we have been very happy with it as the gas prices rise. We can generally get away with about 70$ a month to fill it and in the year and a half we have owned it put over 25K in miles on it. We average 30 mpg stop and go city traffic and 32 mpg highway. I have been down to the empty light being on the whole trip and run 38 miles on about 1.5 gallons (left the airport didn't see the yellow light and No place to get gas once I exited the toll). I Love my Vibe, just wished we had waited for the 2007 which came with OnStar as well. Its the only Gas economical car Pontiac has in their repetoir and they don't advertise it..go figure.

You should try looking at the Chevy Volt, might be right up your alley.
