heh.  Nice one.

As a general rule, any closure, container or device which has “safety” in its description is liable to attack one at a moment’s notice.

GreedyTop -> RE: Absinthe? (5/6/2008 6:27:54 AM)

oh that is SO true...  it's one of the reasons I keep a healthy distance from large power tools (table saws and the like).. I don't care if they DO have those shields on them.. I just KNOW the bastards are waiting to take my hand off.... lol

Yeah I know what you mean … I used to use power tools a lot on my dad’s farm in NE California, as a teenager (I’m British, but my dad was a naturalised yank), but I was ok with those, because they’re self-evidently highly dangerous.

It’s the ordinary, everyday stuff that lunges for me.  Although I did once staple my hand to a fence post with a power stapler.  It doesn’t hurt as much as you’d think, at least not at first, so you stand there, feeling a bit of a burk, staring at your hand stuck to a wooden post.  Then your brain says “that wasn’t too bad – dodged a bullet there … give it a bit of a tug and it’ll probably come out easily”.

Then you try that, and end up screaming your head off.

Then some friends come over and, once they’ve stopped laughing, they use a screwdriver to prise your hand away from the post.

GreedyTop -> RE: Absinthe? (5/6/2008 6:38:08 AM)

and it's not just man made stuff... tree roots that leap up to trip you as you're walking, branches that reach out and smack you in the face...

christine1 -> RE: Absinthe? (5/6/2008 6:55:14 AM)

lol GT, you mean trees have it out for you too?

GreedyTop -> RE: Absinthe? (5/6/2008 7:02:13 AM)

oh yeah, Christine.  anything with thorns on it, too.

anyway, before I get spanked for derailing:

I'd love to try absinthe, in as close to original form as possible.  When I was in Holland we went into a shop that had an antique absinthe set... just GORGEOUS!! (and wicked expensive)

Hang on, I’ll go check the bottles …

<rummages in cupboard>

Those final scores are:

Pastis (“51”): 45%
Ouzo: 40%
Sambuca: 40%

So a narrow victory for pastis there, on the final lap.

And now, back to the studio.

All true, if you keep weak-ass tourist Ouzo in your cabinet.    Barbayannis, probably the widest distribution of the better Greek ouzos, clocks in at 46-50%   Babatzyim, similar in scope and taste, at 46-48%, with their "crown royal"  Ouzo Apostagma Classic Babatzim closer to 52% -- and smooth as the rear end of a lovely young Greek.  (If the stuff were available readily in the USA, I could be in real trouble).   Home brewed ouzo by the way can approximate 80% alcohol.  And it commonly does, because of the unique way Ouzo is made.   It is flavored pure grain alcohol, diluted DOWN (as opposed to the foundations of most apertifs which is brandy, distilled UP.  If you really want to know more about this, ask.)

So my point is if you just want to read labels off of liquor bottles you purchased once upon a time, you can post what you want.  In fact, ouzo is more intoxicating.  Not because of myth or magic, because it has more ethyl alc. in it per shot.  Duh.

kittinSol -> RE: Absinthe? (5/6/2008 10:08:49 AM)

Hmmmmmmmmmmmm... blindingly high alcohol content does not necessarily make for a good drink.

Mouthwash averages 20%, waaaaaaaaayyyy more than any good wine [8D] . The champion: surgical alcohol, 90%!!!

Absinthe's success relies nearly exclusively on the myth surrounding it; it's amusing how the biggest Absinthe snobs are to be found in America. Ahem...

Need I say more [:D] ?

Point of order: I’m a total Absinthe snob and I’m British.  And live in Britain.

kittinSol -> RE: Absinthe? (5/6/2008 2:47:03 PM)

Oh, the British are terrible snobs about their drinks, I completely agree [8D] .

The only bit of that pile of patronisations I actually take exception to is the accusation any drink remains in my drinks cupboard for longer than a couple of months without being quaffed.

you don't have to do the box stuff Gwyn...they have this big, glass gallon jug of tasty stuff too, and it must be high class and good, the bottle is glass after all!

i so hope people can see my humor sometimes.....[8|]  i'm really not white trash ok?

well, anyway....wanna share my bag of spicy pork rinds?  hold on a sec, i've got an itch in my overalls.....

*chucklesnorts*

The only time I buy the big assed jugs ( yes I do buy them) is to do large vats of Coq au Vin. That much Good burgandy just to boil down would cost a small fortune.

Ms. Christine you would *love* my cookin!

Oh no.. not the screw top and box o' wine crap

Better get used to it gwyn. Withing in the next 10 years or so all wine with the exception of maybe Champange and some really high end reds will be screw top or box.

Nooooooo!!!!!!!!!  I refuse! I know the halfway decent vinyards have promised to keep the cork.

I do not mind paying an extra buck or two to get good wine.

Gwynvyd -> RE: Absinthe? (5/7/2008 2:01:08 PM)

"Now I don’t know about you, but the thought of 15% of the world’s wine going straight down the plughole is one which causes me to weep.  All that lovely wine, ruined by microbes … cut off in its prime, as it were, and unable to unleash its glorious, fruity and “sunshine in a glass” capacity is tragic."

*Gasp* I had *no* idea that so much of the lovely stuff was wasted by contamination from real cork.

At least they have come up with other methods of keeping it safe for our consumtion. *big smile*

I do not mind drinking the mid-range cheaper stuff as I am cooking, or just setting around. I quite sadly can no longer drink any reds that are not cooked into something. *sobs* Damn tannins give me migraines.

I do as much recycling as humanly possible. Not sure on the wine box recycling... I need a bigger fridge to fit one of those babies in my fridge for cooking. I can see where the not knowing how much was drank can be bad. *chuckles* I had a friend who used to "lose her box" while out walking from camp to camp of friends.

Gwyn..

Wineries are businesses and they are in it for profits. Within the next 10 years,  95% of wines under $100 will be screw tops or box. because they are cheaper and they protect the wine better. As for synthetic corks, they leak way too much and again..cost way more that screw tops and boxes.  Will you $350.00 bottles still have cork and lead foil? Probably but your really good $20 bottle will not.
