For instance, Germany - a larger population than we have in the UK and a more prosperous one too. Yet who provides thousands of troops for Afghanistan's combat zones and who provides a few logistics types far from the firing lines?

You know, there are some obstacles stemming from history when it comes to the German military and fighting.
I would not count on that changing too soon.
Indeed, nor should it. I rather like Deutschland just the way it is, and if I could afford it, would be one of the very few places on the planet I'd voluntarily live.

Oddly, in the 3 times I've been to Germany, I never met a single soul who was obsessing about being invaded by anybody. They know it's preposterous, and they don't even have an ocean between them and any potential "enemy". I even read a little German, and I never read any hysterical editorials about invaders and other comic-book shit in Der Spiegel Or Suddeutsch Zeitung or Berliner Morgenpost. It's a sick right-wing fantasy about hordes of Chinese or Moslems landing at Newport Beach or the Jersey shore. Cracks me up.

Zensee -> RE: Demilitarizing America (5/7/2008 11:26:11 AM)

Problem is, LadyEllen, DA is not listening to anything you or anyone else here says. His posts read more like daily propaganda broadcasts that a discussion.

He seems ruled by his profound disappointment that, after all his training and time in deployment, the USA did not give him a kill to hang on his rec room wall. He mistakes the right of a country to defend itself with an invented right to use aggression to extend its privilege. He mistakes the occupation of Iraq with the prosecution of the perpetrators of 9/11.

He mistakes being a warrior with being a killer. He mistakes a show of force with the direct expression of it. He ignores the wisdom of real warriors in favour of some competitive, juvenile sports model of conduct.

He seems to have forgotten that one of the expressed purposes of the present global aggression of the USA is to export democracy and freedom yet DA sees no contradiction inventing special jurisdictions expressedly denying these principles (Gitmo et el) or stealing liberty from the very country he imagines he is defending.

He says the only crime in war is to lose. What a chest-thumping crock of shit. One of the crimes in war is giving weapons to people with arrested emotional development and
a lust for blood. The allies can thank this policy of cowboyism for a number of "friendly fire" deaths amongst America's friends in Afghanistan and Iraq.

As the demands for cannon-fodder increase, more and more criminals are being inducted into the ranks and more and more atrocities against civilians can be expected. These are crimes of war in the making.

The thing is, the present policy of the USA compels an increase of aggression on both sides. The USA cannot demilitarise in any meaningful sense because it has created a self justifying, self generating atmosphere of fear and rage. It is this which it exports, not democracy - not peace. How's that definition of madness go; You keep doing the same thing over and over expecting a different result? The prophesy of war fulfills itself.

There are other reasons that more criminals are beiong inducted into the service.  Policies left over from the last administration have made it next to impossible for many of us to get back into the military.  The downsizing was so forceful that many who would better serve their country cannot.
As for your cowboy arrested development shit, it is exactly that.  Our soldiers are caught between fighting a war and playing tiddleywinks with an enemy that wants them dead.  Whatever led up to that point, it is where they stand.  Morons in office want them to fight a "kinder gentler war" and they still want results.  Trying to do these opposite things is as much to blame for friendly fire as is anything else.  They want no collateral damage but throw a fit when the enemy hides behind the things they are not supposed to hurt and gets away.  Our soldiers can either do the job or not.  It is our congress who needs to get their shit together.

Let him be. It is easier to spot the nutjobs if they keep spouting blatant lies.

Curing ignorance is one of the greatest things one can do for mankind.

Do you realize how many people you would have to slaughter to cut ignorance?  For some it is a way of life.

lronitulstahp -> RE: Demilitarizing America (5/7/2008 8:11:25 PM)

i   think it's more something one does a little at a time.  If i can help one person have a deeper understanding of something, i am doing my part in curing them of a bit of ignorance...so gradually it spreads.
