A Florida teacher may have to pull an unemployment check out of his hat after performing magic in front of students, according to reports.
Jim Piculas said he made a toothpick disappear and reappear in front of students at the Rushe Middle School in Land 'O Lakes, Fla., Local6.com reported. He said he later got a call from the supervisor of teachers, saying he had been accused of wizardry.
"I get a call the middle of the day from head of supervisor of substitute teachers. He says, 'Jim, we have a huge issue. You can't take any more assignments. You need to come in right away,'" he told Local6.com.
Piculas said he’s concerned the incident may prevent him from being considered for future jobs.

The headline is misleading. When reading the full (albeit short) article it doesn't say why he was being called in nor told why he wouldn't be getting more assignments. Nothing whatsoever about being accused by anyone for the reason of wizardry.Goofy time wasting crap, so what if a toothpic disappears?

Perhaps the issue is that he was doing magic tricks instead of the assigned lesson plan?????

Well he says it was only 30 seconds which doesn't seem like a large enough amount of time to throw off a lesson plan, and I recall teachers often doing 'stuff' to get our interest and demonstrate things. Who knows though, there simply isn't enough information to say one way or another. If it is valid and that is all there is to it then I think it's a shame. Personally I will never understand how the concept of magic can be considered evil by some, especially those that are highly religious. I've always thought God would have to be magical to exist.

Good thing the toothpick didnt evolve into a toothbrush. He might really have been in trouble there.

And even more here and here.

Personally, what I find annoying is some people's automatic assumption that this is some kind of "religious right wing" issue.

It could just as easily (and more likely in my opinion, based on just the sources I've read so far) that an incompetent substitute teacher is trying to use the media - by appealing to some in society's anti-religious memes - to generate enough pressure to get his job back, or is attempting to embarass and/or punish those responsible for firing him.

Might not be the correct interpretation, as I am just making an educated guess, but just as likely correct as anyone else's view.

Dont spoil it FH! Its far too valuable as comedic material for facts to come into the picture!

Now, "expelliamus" and let the mirth recommence!

Largo, Florida – The same school district that allegedly fired a substitute teacher after he performed a magic trick in class has paid a Largo man to perform magic tricks at a summer program for years. http://www.tampabays10.com/news/local/article.aspx?storyid=80222
Thanks for the additional links Firmhand. I wonder if he was hoping the rest would just slide by somehow?  Actually I didn't mean to link religion as strongly to it as I seemed to. It sparked a memory for me that has always been frustrating. When the third Harry Potter book came out I was had been working at a bookstore for a half dozen or so years. An older gentleman came in seeking a book for his 8 year old nephew  who 'had an active imagination' so I suggested the book of the moment. Harry Potter.He actually backed away from me and put his hands behind his back as if he could catch something from me, and told me in no uncertain terms that his nephew would not be exposed to sinful magic and violence.He also said he would pray for me (then asked for my manager). So while I did not assume that this was due to some 'religious right wing issue' (a phrase I have never uttered in my life) of a concerned parent I assumed only that the teacher saw it as having to do solely with the magical disappearing toothpick and it connected to that memory. That particular incident pops up in my mind when things like 'kid learning/exploring, denial of creativity'   join together, thats all.

Honestly, E... you're going to get someone hurt around here if you're not more careful.  It's Expelliarmus not Expelliamus

Remember what Professor Flitwick said during first year, "... saying the magic words properly is very important, too -- never forget Wizard Baruffio, who said ‘s’ instead of ‘f’ and found himself on the floor with a buffalo on his chest.”

As Always, Best Regards,

Hermi...

There is only one antidote to this story: stop reading Fox news.

Pfft... just goes to show what you know.  Wizards can't see into the future, though some like to think they can using the tools of Divination.  But Professor McGonagall says Divination is a very imprecise branch of magic and that true Seers are very rare.

Personally, I think it's all a load of old tosh.

My three links were to:

1. The Tampa FL channel 10 site (WTSP-TV, a CBS affiliate)
2. United Press International (UPI, a news service much like AP)
3. WMNF FM radio station ( The call letters stand for: Member-sponsored Non-commercial FM), which lists its news sources as:
   * Free Speech Radio News
   * The Florida Report
   * Latino USA
   * This Way Out

Often, when Fox is mentioned in contempt, I simply take it as a self-identification of true-believer-ism.  (heh ... my new word for the day.

But, I was addressing slaveboy, because it was a Faux News link that he attached to his thread. And see... I even wrote 'antidote', as a charming pun to go with the wizardry story :-) .

Tsk tsk, Firmhand... your political eagerness and enthusiasm are to be commended, but they do betray you at times  .

I think your punning charm is a dud, but it wouldn't have worked on Firm anyway... he's already been bewitched.

By the way, "counter-spell" would have been a better choice than "antidote".
