Lucious,

If you review my original post - which offended you so - you will note that I was responding to:
>>Paste

ORIGINAL: Owner59

This is a great example of why teachers should get tenure and why they need unions to protect them from the loons.

>>end paste

I didnt propose the idea of tenure. I stated why I think it is a bad idea... By all means please re-read my original post. It was against the notion that teachers are feeble minded little creatures that need a union to protect them and that they should keep their jobs on the basis of tenure rather than merit. I dont know what is so offensive about the idea of expecting them to maintain their job on the basis of performance. I would think for example of you teach say 7th grade you would want the idiots, slackers, and boobs removed from K - 6 so that by the time a student arrives in your class you have something to work with. Further, the incident in which this whole thread is based is about the discipline of a sub, and as you see by my pasting of the requirements for subs in this district (Which is an "Exemplary" rated district per the TEA) subs are hardly at the top of the food chain. So this guy fucked up and lost a $70 - $85 a day job as a sub - who cares? Is that a reason to bring in unions and tenure as Owner59 suggested?

Counterspell yes, you're correct, it would have been far better than antitode. To late to edit now, alas, but next time, next time.

Hey, I wasn't trying my charm on him, by the way... I hope he's not offended? And you, more to the point? Cos that's the last thing on my mind. Sometimes mischievoussness gets the better of me.

Anyway... hasta la vista!

You know what they say... hindsight is 20/20.  It happens.

And no... the Captain and I took no offense.  Your ability to disagree and still have fun is appreciated.  This place wants for a bit more mischeviousness, at times.

My apologies Treasure, for getting the spell wrong - thing is, I've never read more than a page or two of HP and not seen all the films either.

The reason? Its poorly written drivel.

No need for apologies, E.  'Twas just an opening for continued levity.

Though I do find it curious that you, of all people, would declare the books as poorly written drivel based on "a page or two".  I hardly think that would be a sufficient sample to accurately gauge a compiled work of over 1,084,170 words.  Surely those who purchased the 375 million copies sold worldwide in 65 different languages can't all be wrong.

A book's commercial success isn't necessarily an indication of its quality though (look at how rich Dan Brown is  ).

That's very true, but you'd think with those numbers there has to be at least a couple in there who aren't literary Philistines and who read more than a page or two.

Thing is Treasure, I can read Mark Twain and in a page or two gauge his writing as brilliant. I refuse to plough (or even plow) through more than a few pages of any story once its apparent the writer has no talent whatsoever.

And popularity is no guarantee of good quality. Look how many people watch gameshows and reality TV

Well, I would agree with you on the gameshows and reality TV trash... it's amazing what people will spend their time on and enjoy.  Nonetheless, it demonstrates that quality is subjective and I'd hate to drag the thread down to this level.

I mean goodness... imagine what could be said of the quality of this forum and those who chose to spend their time here?

Teachers follow a lesson plan that is formulated by the state and/or the school board depending on where you live, and they are allowed very little latitude in deviating from that lesson plan.

An ex-girlfriend of mine laughed when I brought up the "lesson plan".  Not only do they tell you WHAT to teach, they also tell you WHEN to teach it.  "If your kids don't hit these targets by the 3rd week of the 4th month of school, then your performance review will suffer."

She referred to the "lesson plan" as the "regurgitation plan" as it focused more on quoting facts rather than teaching reasoning skills.

We're self selected Treasure, a snapshot of the luminous genius that comprises the BDSM population. We're also exclusive - note what happens when someone of lesser quality comes in here and is quickly dissuaded from further participation.

In other words, we are the top quality people of the world!

E?  trust me.. read the Potter books.. I so enjoyed them.. I refused for the longest time to read them, purely based on the hype.. some of them are hard to get into for the first chapter... but afterwards, they are pure fun :)

I have tried GT - my UM had all of them as they came out and wanted me to read them to him for bed time on various occasions. He read them himself too, but from time to time would present one to me to read a chapter. It was awful rubbish. The only kids' book otherwise that I've found worse was some futuristic thing about a detective.

Honestly, it would have been great for me to enjoy the books too. But I cant honestly say anything positive about them apart from they comprised an interesting idea overall, which was then poorly executed.

But obviously I'm in the minority on this

I enjoyed the Harry Potter series; and I'm a book snob.
It's not for everyone, though, of course.

i've thought about being a teacher.. but there so much useless schooling you have to take jsut so u can go to a school and teach something ur not prepared for. my highschool scient 3 teacher (chemistry) didnt know ANYTHING about chem.. she read from the book and if u had a question that wasnt covered in the book she did not know the answer. now most of the other teachers were better.. but she was new and hadnt had time to figure out the answers. i still might become a teacher but with all the BS classes u have to have jsut so the school board/state can tell me/u that u have to teach english instead of Science because we need english tearchers jsut makes no sence to me.

on the Tenure thing... for College teachers its fine.. kids should be smart enough to know when to pay attention to a teacher and when to not.. but elementary/middle school/high school... no.. unions a good idea so they dont get screwed when its time to cut bugets and such. cuz realisticly.. they need something to be able to get behind for protection for unrightful dismissial or whatever. yes i believe the stupid OCD cant do anything with out a 5 page memo teachers should be gotten rid of.. but it wont change unless us (the tax payers) make it change.. its the same way with a lot of things.. but were just to lazy to actually care enough to do anything about it.

ill stop ranting now or ill go into a cussing fit.

This conversation is illuminating as far as educational standards are concerned. It's all starting to make sense.

Narnia was well written from what I remember (it was 30 years ago I read them) but I disliked the Christian influence in them.

LOTR was dreadfully written, but I liked the heathen influence in them

lol... I do believe we've really hijacked this thread.

I never read the Chronicles of Narnia when I was younger.  I've tried several times recently but I just can't get past the writing style.  It's like trying to become engrossed in "Dick and Jane".

To try to return somewhat to the op, I have to agree with Firm and not just because he's my dom... this substitute teacher appears to be trying to use the public's propensity to form a knee-jerk opinion based on a few carefully spun soundbytes, to either generate pressure, exact revenge, or just gain attention.  I imagine we'll be seeing a book or movie deal sometime in the future.
