bipolarber -> RE: Indiana Jones makes Russian communists see red (5/24/2008 7:12:49 AM)

The Indy Jones films are two fisted tales of pulp adventure. Like Doc Savage, or The Shadow, or any number of other "weird heroes" that were pumped out during the depression era. As such, they require melodramatic villians. In the last three films, it was Hitler and the Nazis who filled that role. In this film, set in 1957, the villians are the reds. I think what's upsetting them is the fact that we remembered all too well what they were like, 50 years ago.. (and in many ways, still are...note Putin's propensity for poisoning people who disagree with him) But, comon, saying Indiana Jones is insulting Russia is like saying James Bond is insulting to women. It's a fantasy. And a pretty pre adolecent one at that. This kind of stereotyping exists on both sides. I remember watching some soviet science fiction film at a convention a few years back, which was pretty apolitical up until the stalwart hereoes discocered a derilect spacecraft. Going inside, they discover that the capitalist cew and passengers killed each other off for their life support after the ship's engines broke down, and instead of solving their common problems, they were too busy drinking, fucking and fighting to fix the ship. So they all died. Nukes were onboard, aparently to weild power over some poor, unsuspecting soviet colony world. (the room erupted in laughter at the clumsy stereotypes.)
