$250 might get you a Kel-Tec p-11, which will put a Luger sized hole in someone at close range, but that's about it.

It doesn't say what particular gun they are giving away.  I'd have to know that before I made my choice.  The barbershop where I go was having a raffle last month to send one of their barbers to some convention.  They were giving away a choice between a MAK-90 or a Mossberg 500.  I signed up for it, but I didn't win.  I would have taken the MAK-90; I already have a shotgun.

"Moore said the dealership will hand the customer a certificate to get the gun, but you must pass a background check."

I'm guessing it's a coupon and you get to pick. I'd go with a Glock 23 or 27 myself.

Would take a bit too long to protect yourself with them in the event of an intruder, would it not?

As they say, some chance with a gun at your side is better than no chance without one. Just ask the 56 year old special ed teacher here who was robbed and beaten in the afternoon at a grocery store, presumably for nothing more than her purse. She may not be able to answer you though, she has brain damage now because someone thought her purse was worth the beating she got.

You could also ask the pharmacist about 2 miles south whose pharmacy was robbed with him being shot in the hip.

Or the clerk at the 7/11 who was robbed and shot dead.

Or the guy getting into his car about a block away at the "rich people mall" who was shot and robbed as well.

Do you know what the odds are of having to skin a deer with a knife inorder to survive?  It's not going to happen.

The hunter gather period is long over and there is no way people could survive on hunting in the modern age.  There is simply too many people.

Here is my survival list:
Tins of food.
Bottled water.
Car with fuel.
Mental map of how to leave the city .
Passport.
Small barbeque.
First aid kit.

If I was going to add a gun to the list, I would go for a .38 sp snobnose revolver.

Like I said, I'd have to see what their selection was.  $250 handguns generally aren't great guns, but it depends on what you want it for.  Not all cheap firearms are bad.   A lot of people can't afford to spend a large sum of money on a weapon.  You can get something for defense purposes for $250 that will be perfectly adequate.

Here is where Im coming from on this... a few years back I took a series of wilderness survival classes, I hike every moment I can during the summer, (when im not playing in the desert) and I wanted to make sure that if something went wrong while I was 1/2 way into the Wasatch or Oquirhh mountains I would be able to survive and make it back out

i.e. if a bear came and took off with my pack, (which happened to a firend of mine who had been fishin while he hiked)

I believe very firmly in being prepared, so the packthat I never set down for even a second contains a first aide kit, a box of matches, water purifying tablets, and a good knife, among other things

If it's a certificate that works like a coupon, you can just put it toward the gun you want. A $250 coupon is still a hell of a savings for most decent guns. Hell that'd cut the one I want down by more than half, making a $410 weapon into a $160 weapon.

I heard the guy being interviewed on NPR yesterday (he must be a communist, then). He explained that they sold 45 cars in the past week, and that nearly everybody goes for the gun, because they have it for life (or death, if luck would have it ).

Or, with a cheap handgun and a George Bush mask, who needs to worry about gas prices?

It depends on where you live.  The town I live in is surrounded by heavily forested mountains.  The population density is sparse.  In my truck right now is a compass, a good multitool type knife, a poncho that can be made into a shelter, binoculors, a folding trenching tool (small shovel that can double as an axe), a rod and reel with tackle (I fish a lot, so I keep it in my truck), 30 feet of rope, several boxes of matches, and a first aid kit.  If I could only take one of my guns, it would be my shotgun.  I'd grab my mess kit from the cupboard, and all the food I could grab.  Fresh water is in abundance here, and it's not hard to purify water.
