Status: offline 		LEST WE FORGET THE SPECIAL PURPOSE OF THIS DAY, I TAKE THIS MOMENT TO SALUTE THOSE AMONG US WHO HAVE SERVED IN UNIFORM WHETHER OR NOT YOU WENT TO WAR! iF NOT YOU WERE SIMPLY FORTUNATE.

THIS SALUTE APPLIES TO THE "D"'s AS WELL AS "S"s

Status: offline 		I'll add mine as well. AS Mommy to one S type that might be going eventually, friend to many and suplier of photos to many military daddies and mommies over there now (My own lettle effort, I help coordinate photo albums for the parents deployed) I salute them all.

Status: offline 		You know, I tried to start a "Thank You" thread earlier, but I guess my unpopular opinions on this site have earned me some kind of restriction. It keeps coming up "feature is either disabled, or you have insufficient permission." Kinda ironic... Anyway, CelticPrince, thanks for getting one started.

It's been a wonderful day... Kinda hot an humid this weekend, but it was still great to BBQ some ribs out back, and we went down to Riverfest here in Little Rock, on Saturday and listened to ZZ Top in concert, and a few others. (I think I have a bit of sunburn...) The fireworks over the river were spectacular, as always.

I just wanted to thank everyone here who is a vet, or in the service currently. I don't care if you're a latrine cleaner back here in the states, or some poor schmuck who's been "stop lossed" into six or seven tours of duty in the sand. I owe EVERYTHING to you women and men. It's because of you I can speak my mind, and at the most, get banned from some stupid site or other. NOT tossed into a black prison, waterboarded, and killed, just for pointing out the obvious failure of the administration. (at least, so far) You guys totally have my respect and admiration.

(an aside: Two years ago, I was looking for a job. And I was one of the final choices for a 9-1-1 dispatcher gig. [really good money] but, I found out one of the other candidates was a woman who recently returned from Iraq. I voluntarily bowed out. It was the least I could do.)

One of the things I did today, aside from getting a headace from drinking diet soda, hot dogs, and getting too much sun, was to sign on to my local representatives, and tell them of my support for the new GI bill, and the fact I don't want these folks to lose ANY benefits. I could care less about the cost. (I guess it may be up to Pres Obama to actually "support the troops" because Bush and his minions certainly aren't showing them any love on this topic.)

Status: offline 		As a veteran I would like to thank you for turning a polite and touching tribute to the men and women who have served into a political slam on "Bush and his minions" and an endorsement of "Pres Obama".... (As his fellow democratic candidate aptly pointed out, he hasn't lived to November, much less been elected so that title is a bit premature.)

For the record - lets add some special thanks to two distinguished Naval Aviators -

LT. George H. W. Bush, USN - winner of the Distinguished Flying Cross, three air medals and a Presidential Unit Citation.

and

CAPT. John Sidney McCain III, USN Ret. - whose 17 decorations include the Silver Star, Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Distinguished Flying Cross, Purple Heart, and Navy Commendation Medal. 

Let us also not forget to thank another man who served his country honorably in the cockpit of an F-102 as one of the elite 147th - "The Guardians of the Gulf"...  

1st Lt. George W. Bush, Texas Air National Guard.

Gentlemen, as veterans and fellow pilots, I raise a glass of Jerimiah Weed in your honor - FOX TWO!

Status: offline 		Lest we forget, "Memorial Day" was begun to commemorate those who died in The Civil War. It was later expanded, according to Wikipedia, to include those who died in WWI.

"Memorial Day is a United States Federal holiday observed on the last Monday of May (in 2008 on May 26). Formerly known as Decoration Day, it commemorates U.S. men and women who perished while in military service to their country. First enacted to honor Union soldiers of the American Civil War, it was expanded after World War I to include casualties of any war or military action."

It is called MEMORIAL DAY because we remember those who died. DIED. We don't commemorate the living. That's what VETERAN'S DAY is for. Canada and the UK have "Rememberance Day", which IIRC is Nov. 11, to memorialize those who died in WWI.

Before any of you swinging dicks piss your panties, I got my DD214.

Status: offline 		I don't find it impolite to talk about what it really means to support our troops.  IMHO, our veterans need health benefits a bit more than parades.  There's actually money enough for both.

This is a special thanks to Joshua who made it back to be the Dad and Husband he ought to be.  To Zac who came back and gave us all his weird Iraqui flu - she says, still hacking up crud.  And to Steven, who came back in a flag draped casket.

Yes, it was originally called "Armstice Day."  It was originally a day to remember the end of the "war to end all wars."  But it was later changed to Memorial Day to remember all the fallen. 

That being said, there isn't anything wrong with extending thanks to those that served and lived to tell about it.
