In that case, i politely beg to differ. Mr Bush's experience as a Reservist qualified him as a veteran eligible for benefits.  While he may have not faced combat in that regard, by 2004 as POTUS he was responsible for command and control of US forces against an enemy that had attacked within the US.  If the primary or secondary goal was to prevent a follow up attack on US soil, i would say he did pretty well, decorations or not, and he did so without getting himself injured in combat (the requirement for the purple heart), although i do recall that he choked on a pretzel one night.  Ah well, not everyone's service record is spotless.

Claiming that hiding in a unit meant to protect the privileged from danger and then not even having the honor to actually fulfill the requirements of the contract makes one a veteran is deeply offensive.

GWB should by all accounts have faced a general court and received, at best, a Bad Conduct Discharge if not actually getting jail time and a Dishionorable Discharge. Either of which would bar him from all benefits of service and therefore makes him not a veteran.

Had that actually happened (dishonorable discharge and court martial) he probably would not have been elected.  Apparently no one with direct knowlege or authority gave this enough credence to pursue it.
On the other hand, his time as Commander in Chief of US forces in a time of conflict actually did happen.  And, incidentally would make him eligible for veteran's benefits on that basis.

Actually it was pretty well-documented.  Bush Sr. engaged the help of the lieutenant governor of Texas at the time, who later admitted he pulled strings to get Jr. in the Air Guard.  As far as his not fulfilling his tour of duty, there was never a direct paper-trail to charge him but but how do you explain he seems to have completely disappeared from fulfilling his military obligations in the last 8 months of his service?  Alien abduction?

Then again, that could explain a lot.

I have to agree with Rule.  POTUS sounds ... dirty in the bad way.

As for the whole Reagan thing, thanks for the information.  Sounds to me like he served where they assigned him and where they decided that he would be most useful.  There were many other veterans in WW2 that never saw combat.  I guess you'd say that they don't deserve to be called "veteran" either.

Ya know, for those who think that reagan selling war bonds and making patriotic films etc makes him less of a veteran... Keep in mind that while I flew combat, there was an accountant type in a uniform somewhere who served with honor and distinction making sure that I got my paycheck... I loved that person, god bless them wherever they may be. Now the motherless bastard who bought the ground donkey dick that they made the meatloaf out of - he should have been shot for treason!

LOL.  The enlisted men got the other parts of the donkey.

Sorry for the use of the acronym, i was simply trying to follow the initial reference used in this, or perhaps another thread.  It took me a moment to realize that this stood for President of the United States, it has been a bit since i lived in acronym world, and i understand your pet peeve (or rant) and apologize.

To the best of my knowlege, the president served 120 days and received an honorable discharge.  To the best of my knowlege that is the requirement to be listed as a vet, and to the best of my understanding,  Communing with aliens does not seem to take away from that, nor does it, by itself, break any laws that i am aware of.

Didn't Glen Miller die serving his country in uniform as an entertainer?

In theory. He is officially "missing" as neither his aircraft wreckage nor his body have been recovered.. However, he PROBABLY died when the Royal Air Force bombed him out of the sky while jettissoning weapons...

Actually, for the first election after 9/11 and with a tactician's view going "where the heck is the follow up attack?"  i considered it a bit smarter to look to a guy who knew how to duck and cover, then a fellow who was decorated with 4 indications that he might not have enough sense to get the hell out of the way.  Without evidence or any indication that it was Bush's intent, the perpetrators seem to be focused on another part of the world, with people that can shoot back, not the next tall building they can find.  It is disheartening that the presumed leader is still at large.

Yes, I see what you mean.  It's much smarter to look to a coward who was able to avoid combat by virtue of his family's political prestige than it is to someone who was wounded multiple times and saw the horrors of war firsthand.

Worked out pretty well huh?  So much for the "tacticians view".

No, don't know what I was thinking when I posted that.  If you served you served.  Just let my anger at GWB get the best of me because I really believe he did play the system.  Always liked Reagan, though not all his policies.

Good response.  I kind of figured it was something like that.
