Spot on Alumbrado. And can CL or someone else please define the statement " We have racists in America but it is not a racist society? " What is the disconnect here exactly? What are your defining parameters that weight the balance from "some racists here" to "racist society"?

I hate to agree with celticlord on anything...but...I do believe the United States should not be called a racist society any longer..BUT there are still many racist among us...of all races.

I would like anyone to point me to a society that has done a better job of changing its laws and attitudes towards racism of any kind.

Butch

There are still many racists among us, and the overt changes in laws and attitudes have forced many more to hide their racism and adopt a covert approach to it.  The new 'I'm no racist, buuuut...' is no less racist than the old version, and seems harder to eradicate.

kittinSol -> RE: Racism (6/4/2008 5:18:26 AM)

It's because they don't feel concerned by racism. It's typical of an individualistic mentality: "it's them, not me", therefore it's an individual problem, not a social one.

They're mistaken, of course.

boytoy4female -> RE: Racism (6/4/2008 5:32:18 AM)

Is the cup half full, or half empty? Is racism as prevalent as it is made out to be? Or, does referring to yourself by race or using the "race card" perpetuate racism? Try integrating into the mainstreem culture, so you may see the forrest and the trees.

Aynne -> RE: Racism (6/4/2008 5:37:58 AM)

That is a valid point kittin. They are so removed from it they either refuse to accept it or they just don't care and repeat the same old rhetoric. By the way, I wandered over to the humor section...yeah, no racism in america today.

Nod... I saw that. A couple of weeks ago there was a crappy joke about a rabbi and the IRS. Two days ago a disgusting joke about a black guy and his son on an airplane about to crash... people find these things 'humourous', yet when you ask them where the humour resides they're unable to tell you... Hopefully mentalities will evolve.

The racists are outside mainstream society.  Racists are the exception in American society and not the rule.

Mind you, I'm speaking of real racism, real prejudice, not left-wing notions of "you looked at me funny so you must not like the color of my skin".

    That being the case, take responsibility for all, We are a Murderous, drug involved, society of thieves, and rapists who have no tolerance for those different than ourselves, and limited tolerance for those like ourselves.  i guess i should add self-loathing as well.
      Having read through this thread, there seems to be a concensus of those who are most directly involved as potential victims for your concern, that your concern is unwarranted, with a quite polite thank you offered.
       The unfair part of things is to let others set your boundaries,  limitations and goals.  i wonder if that is the fault of the others, or the individual.

Well Duh....that is all the law can do. Did you think when they passed a hate law, that would flip some switch in peoples heads and suddenly no one would be racist? Give me a bloody flipping break. All a law can do is make sure they keep their twisted hateful little thoughts to themselves, it can't change their thinking.

And ya know what else....this is not a US only problem.

You do that. My asian business partner, incidentally ex-husband, found it wayyyy less than funny. Actually he said figures a bunch of white people that speak only one language and not even well make fun of the accents of the bi-lingual.

And still people expect us to "lighten up" and compare jokes on racial issues to blond jokes?  Good luck on the evolution theory kittin, sadly I don't see it happening as long as people continue to deny it even exists. Racial humor is not humor in any form.

Perhaps people with a bias for xenophobic humour are the missing link .

*giggle* [:)] Sad but apt I think.

lally3 -> RE: Racism (6/4/2008 6:46:51 AM)

In some parts of the country that is true... In other parts the KKK is far from impotent and underestimating them could be a potentially fatal error. For example, the KKK is alive and well in Jasper Texas and a bunch of them left pieces of a black man spread out over several miles of roadway when they dragged him to death behind a pickup truck for no reason except wrong place wrong time... In Vidor Texas a black man had best not be there when the sun goes down and the sole holdout in President Clintons (note I said Clinton not Johnson!) failed attempt at integration was shot dead 11 hours after he left town. In either Conroe / Spring / or The Woodlands Texas (I can never tell whats what up there) a teenage hispanic kid was buttfucked with a patio unbrella in front of dozens of classmates and parents for asking out a white girl.  The teenagers involved were Klan. There are still a lot of sunset towns in the American South and underestimating the Klan there can get someone hurt or killed fast....

oh....  im too stunned to find the right words to respond.......!.

here in the UK there is a growing resentment toward the immigration situation.  pressure on a small country that just cant cope with the influx of people with no skills, english language or money, coming here because they can and because we have free medical care, education and a crazy welfare system. its getting worse rather than better here.  racism here in england is on the increase.  almost every day you hear on the news how someone was knifed, set fire to and so on....  much of it is the same ignorant meathead mentality of the KKK, but the more insidious, creeping variety is down to territorialism, pure and simple. what burns me is the lack of logic and insight from our government to see and understand that what they are creating is a build up of pressure and resentment that can only get worse as immigration into this country continues to escalate.

i always naively thought that Britain was a racist free country until a guy told me that every day he gets comments just walking down the street.  it struck me that as a white person i have no idea what goes on during an average day for an average guy with a complexion darker than everyone elses'.  so i stopped being naive.  except where the KKK was concerned - sadly naive there too it would seem.

racism is despised by just about everyone and yet its rife in tiny ways white people have no understanding or experience of.

but hey, youre likely to have a black president step up to the plate - thatll please those sick bastards down south!

Aynne -> RE: Racism (6/4/2008 6:57:47 AM)

Perhaps. More than likely just accustomed to ignorance.  Although I do thank you for your inclusion of the "too" in your statement, at least you are equally distributing blame.[8|]

atursvcMaam -> RE: Racism (6/4/2008 7:05:54 AM)

Muérdame, Сдержите меня, Mordez-moi, or Beni dişleyinizyorsunuz.
   Goodness gracious that would seem like quite a racist generalization.  While my heredity is Irish, and my life has been spent in the US with a few trips elsewhere, i will be more than happy to tell you in Spanish, Russian, French, Turkish, and and, of course my inadequate English to bite me.
   That having been said, i hope that you have a great day, and get on with your life, as i intend to.

Why must every little disturbance in the life of a minority be the result of racism by white people?

Can't at least some of it just be plain everyday bad luck? The kind that Murphy hands out with regularity without regard to race, creed, or color?

OmegaG -> RE: Racism (6/4/2008 8:11:30 AM)

it was a good post seeks.

I share some of his experiences.  I was dating black men and not hiding them from my family, but not telling my family either.  My father got a clue one day so I got the lecture on the hardships of interracial dating.  Since I was an adult, I respectfully told the man who'd raised me with an open mind, that I didn't agree with him, that I loved him but that I also had to find happiness my own way.

I was deeply in love with one man and we were talking about marriage.  As it turns out, his mother had even more to say about the union then my father and we split as he couldn't be the one to cause a rift between himself and his mother.

I wish your son happiness.
