So now it is all Murphy's fault?  Wait, isn't he a white guy?  How does anyone dare to tell an Irish joke?

deleted cause it made my adult son upset to be discussed when i asked him to read it and make sure i got the facts straight.

have a goodun folks

Good for him.  Not that he was upset, but that he does not seem to want to dwell in those thoughts.  Good for you too for trying to plead his case, and for allowing him to find his own recovery.

Usually after being well fortified with Irish whisky (Scotch will work as well)

lostinthefog -> RE: Racism (6/4/2008 8:32:00 AM)

ahh but celtic, from a fellow Irishwoman, american and Irish whisk"e"y is spelled with the e. Just a little fyi.

All I can say about racist jokes is that if you have a good Irish joke, tell me.  I use the drunken Irishman stereotype as one of the characters I portray when I perform.  If you get two Irishmen together, it seems one of us always has a good Irish joke.  Having said that, I have an extreme distaste for other racial jokes.  I just glaze over when someone starts telling them and give them the blank "thats not funny" stare.  I usually don't get repeat business.  I might be more inclined to listen to someone making jokes about their own ethnic group but thats because anyone who can laugh at himself/herself has at least one redeeming quality.  They don't take themselves too damned seriously.

  An old friend of mine taught me how to end ethnic jokes rather quickly. She would smile and say "You know that i am half _____"  The girl turned out to be half everything, but was cute enough to make fellas shut up and/or apologize immediately.   it made them stop, sometimes it made them think.  The side benefit was that it was always more amusing to watch them squirm than any joke they might have told.

      By the way, my dad always claimed, "If it weren't for whiskey, the Irish would rule the world."

Irishknight -> RE: Racism (6/4/2008 9:31:10 AM)

Your dad is right.

Perhaps. More than likely just accustomed to ignorance.  Although I do thank you for your inclusion of the "too" in your statement, at least you are equally distributing blame.[8|]

I would be the last one to claim racism is dead in the US. Spend 5 minutes on the internet and you can find all kinds of hatred and biased bullshit. I am just thankful that most of the ones who post the hate, don't have the nerve to admit their true feeling in a real life setting. That way I can click them away and not have to be in their presence. I do believe this country has come a long way towards changing it.

kittinSol -> RE: Racism (6/4/2008 2:04:21 PM)

These boards alone reek of it, of the pernicious kind of racism (bar one or two exceptional posters who are blatant) that tries to dissimulate behind a veil of respectability.

I don't believe I owe anyone any money for the crimes of people I happen to be related to anymore than the Africans living in America owe people money because a long time ago their tribes enslaved other tribes in Africa.

It's my opinion that only those who were actually alive during the time period in question deserve it. Otherwise just about every single person owes somebody something and it's not fair to pick and choose. Jews, Africans, Christians, Irish, English, Vikings, Chinese, Native American, etc - all were made captives and took captives from other people. You can argue that some have suffered more but to me that puts a price tag on pain. It's not somewhere I'm willing to go and, for the record, if someone offered me money for Hilter's Holocaust or the raping that the Vikings did I wouldn't take it. It won't take their suffering away - it just sells off their pain.

I am against programs that divide people by enthic group or religion and am in favor of hiring or acceptance programs that don't look at the person's name, picture, or the little box relating to their skin color. I am completely in favor of groups that help kids in lower income families by helping them get extra education but when it comes time to apply for college and jobs I don't think skin color should have a damn thing to do with it.

W/we could certainly debate which group has suffered the most, historically, but yes, the Native Americans have a claim to that 'prize'.

In your opinion. I know plenty of people who call you a damn idiot and say it's Arab women, Jews, Africans, etc. I say it's simply impossible to decide that and anyone who tries is a fool. You could possibly argue that they have suffered the most historically in North America but that's it. And I'm sure people would be willing to fight with you about it anyway. I would.

Edited to add: Have you considered that there will always be racists in America because America is built on the concept of freedom? Freedom means the freedom to hate. The law can punish those who turn their hate into actions but that is it - they can not and should not control our thoughts and feelings. Freedom means Nazis get to march in cities with high Jewish populations and while I wear a star of David, I will defend their right to do so. Freedom isn't always fun.

I must admit that whenever I hear the word 'reparations' in that context I'm struck by the image of thousands of  campesino's children having to put in another hour in the tomato and mushroom fields so that Michael Jackson and Condaleeza Rice can get a check.
