Lockit -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/8/2008 4:05:48 PM)

DomAviator, although I can agree that there are many poor who are like this, there are many who are not and your in-general sweep that all poor are this way is my major problem with you.  Shall I judge all aviator's on the basis of you?  Shall I judge all men on the basis of your manhood?

Is it easier to walk away from the genuinly poor with the opinion that all are poor becasue of a personal lack?  hummmmm Ahhh more poor idiots... you know they are doing something wrong!  Hang them... toss them in the sea... of what good are they to society!

I have been judged in this way... Told I was of no worth and should just shoot myself.  That was my brother before the medical community figured out I was really sick.  He didn't give me credit for anything I accomplished in life.  I was just worthless.

Some of those people in those trailer parks I am sure were like me.  You lump us all together... which tells me one thing.  You are an unteachable spirit... who will stick to something he believes is true no matter what other evidence is provided.  To me... that is poor and a poor life choice.  And it also means... I am done with you.  You cannot be taught or enlightened.

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/8/2008 4:10:55 PM)

the fact that you can talk about how horrible the poor folks are, and brag about how you took their money by offering barely inhabitible housing, all in one writing.....

makes me wanna vomit so bad, i mean worse than reading about the 2 women one cup video, worse than the man dragged behind a truck thread, worse than imagining sucking the pus out of a sore on a homeless mans ass......

youre young, and it seems to me you could be someone who could contribute to the well being of your little corner of the world, if you chose to.  the fact that you refuse to acknowledge that there are folks who, either because of their upbringing, or just the genes they were dealt because 2 folks fucked one night, do not have the mental capacity and/or ability to get a good job, to manage money, to give up the addiction of cigarettes, to even walk out the door of their home because they have panic or phobias, or mental images from their childhood that would make most of us cry.....

youre living the high life now, but you never know when you will be hit by a mental illness, or a truck.... man i cant even figure out how to tell the way im feeling after reading that shit....

youre gonna get a wake up one day......i just hope your oh so superior self is ready for it when it comes.

gawd [sm=soapbox.gif] gimme poor and uneducated folks with compassion any day over a room full with your attitude and resources.

now im going to puke.

DA,
First of all, good luck with that bypass you are gonna need. Between the smokes, the greasy food and the jerimiah whatever the hell it is, you should keep on eye on that. Secondly, lots of idiots in the bar should not have been in there, mainly it was the male clientele drinking away their money and hiding from their wives, ex-wives, kids, you name it. One of my regulars was there every day, while his wife worked two jobs. She left him eventually, and guess what> She is now working two jobs, and even more finanacially destitute. Think she chose that? No. Regardless, just like you and your slumlord trailer park, these patrons paid my mortgage and my vehicle payments for a looong time.  They did not pay double for cigarettes, thank God you can't smoke in bars in Maine,and it was a hotel lounge in an oceanfront place that catered to tourists, not pool tables either.

"McDonalds, Burgerking, Wendys et. al. is fucking expensive and the food is shit. Do I go there? Sometimes but I can get a better deal at a tacquiera or an asian buffet or a BBQ place.  At a tacquiera, I can get a steaming hot freshly cooked torta and an ice cold bottle of the Mexican coke for $4.50 (or a taco / fajita for $1) , I can get lunch at any number of asian buffets for $5.99, I can get the lunch plate at my favorite BBQ joing for $6.50 and dine on BBQ Brisket, smoked links, and two sides instead of $7 for a supersized combo meal at a fast food drive through. Yet you will find no shortage of poor in a McDonalds, and you will find no shortage of McDonalds bags thrown around the lawn of a trailer park or housing project... You will also find no shortage of fat people there!!!

Aynne has repeatedly mentioned bartending... I wonder, how many people has she seen in the bar spending money they shouldnt be spending? How many times has she seen someone buying cigarettes at twice the price from the machine? Or losing money on a pool game they shouldnt be betting on? How many of those patrons should have been at a part time job instead of at a bar? " Dom Aviator

Hi Irish. No, you were not. Trust me, they know who they are.[:D]

Hey I hear you on the ramen noodles. I even have that book, 101 things to do with ramen.  Oddly, every now and then I still like that stuff.

My experiences taught me to deal differently with those in need.

I will gladly give food to someone on the side of the road who needs it.  I will not give money.  The reason for that is a simple one.  I have a natural distrust of human beings.  My trust is earned not offered.  Its just the way I am.

There was an incident when I was in the Navy where I pulled into the grocery store parking lot to see a man with a car full of kids and a sign that said, "Need to buy food for my kids."   I offered to buy the man food for his family and his response was "NO.  I just want the money."  I offered to buy  them a meal at the restaurant across the parking lot as well as 100 bucks in groceries.  Again, he demanded that I just give him the money.    That is when I wrote the man off as a liar and started to walk off.  He asked if I planned to let his kids starve and I told him, "Nope.  Apparently you will though."  When I came out of the store, he was being arrested by the cops.  The man had scammed several hundred dollars out of people and had drugs in the car with his kids.  I still feel bad for the kids because their dad was an asshole.  Those people are the ones who make so many feel the way they do.

Irish, thanks and I think you shed clarity on a point I failed to make. Im not heartless either. I have mentioned my illegal alien dogshit guy repeatedly... Hes offering a SERVICE not asking for a hand out so I gladly patronize him. Same thing with when I go pick up day workers to do things around my house...Yes thye are illegal aliens but the illegal aliens WANT TO WORK. They are saying "hire me" not "gimme". Earlier in the thread PAHunk recounted a story about trying to get some painting done. Same problem with the American poor... By comparison you go to that street in South Houston near the Stinkadena line (Im sure Celtic knows where it is as it seems everyone in Houston does) and all the Mexicans will be there at dawn holding up signs saying "Painter" "Gardener" "Laborer" etc and by god, if you pick them up they will hop in your truck and do the job your hiring them for. No hand out wanted. Ill gladly hire someone, but I wont give them a cash hand out to support their bad habits.

The story you just related Irish, shit like that leaves me jaded too... I once recounted a story on another thread about a wheelchair bound Navy SEAL who was paralyzed in afganistan begging,...This Navy SEAL , apparently the only Corporal in the Navy, who had an ARMY airborne patch on his field jacket and who didnt know what his rate and rating was hopped up out of his wheelchair and ran like a motherfucker when I called the cops.  (He probably realized that the cops in this town couldnt make him a SEAL or a vet, but they would be all to happy to leave him disabled.)

Everybody has something to offer, and if Im going to help you then I expect something in return. It could be something as simple as "wash my car" or "alphabetize these files" (which I was going to shred anyway and will shred after they leave) but I wont turn away a person in need Im just not going to give you a $5 bill so you can go get a pack or Doral and a bottle of boone, or a crack rock. You can earn the money to support your vices like I earn mine. As for feeding people, my BBQ is always open... When I hire day workers Ill feed them, and Ill send them home with left overs too...

Lockit -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/8/2008 4:36:26 PM)

LOL... I live in a building where there are about three apt's with American's.  The hispanic's do want to work and when I can, I give a little boy a dollar to take out my trash and hired two ladies to move my things from my van when I moved in and had a little more than I do now.

But... let me tell you... when it comes to free school stuff or Christmas packages from the Salvation Army or elsewhere... they are the first one's there.  Your theory is faulty and situational.

I didnt take "their money" as I said the rent was paid by DSS (Dept of Social Services) direct deposit into my checking account. So I took MY money - it was my own little tax rebate program. See thats the thing - they didnt HAVE any money... They got it from DSS, so that was MY money they were living on and buying Boone with... I just managed to get $450 per unit of it back every month LOL (Actually I take that back cause I paid lot rent and some expenses so I only got 300 something a month back per unit) They didnt have any money, they were living off of the American Taxpayer which would be - uh me, and you, and those like us...

TheHeretic -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/8/2008 5:06:56 PM)

         Lockit, my mother probably thought exactly the same thing about her ___ knowing that stealing is wrong, but I never had much taste for dignity and rice or macaroni once a day.

        Get hungry enough, and ethics are just another expensive luxury.

Lockit -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/8/2008 5:20:46 PM)

LOL... it was was expensive, but it was all I had left to hang on to.  I do agree... rice and noodles suck... to this day... I hardly ever eat things I made back then.  But I still have to stick to my guns here.  Like I said... it is all I have left! lol

i can't bring myself to insert a quote here; the post would end up being 10 ft long. So, in case A/anyone missed it, i'm replying to DomAviator.

Yr logic just does not work.  Poverty is not caused by an epidemic of laziness.  i was a sociology major, back in college.  It was a fun major -- too bad i didn't know i'd still be unemployable when i graduated.

i believe You when You say Your posts are meant to reflect Yr actual beliefs.  i think it's a shame You labor under such misconceptions.  Must be hard.

pinksugarsub

P.S.  Social Security Disability Income is not drawn from general revenues.  It is not similar to programs like Medicaid.  Instead, it is an insurance program.  When You get paid, the government imposes certain payroll taxes on You.  One of those taxes goes to fund SSDI for You, in case You ever need it.  If You do someday make a claim, the SSA will pay You a monthly stipend based on how much tax You previously paid in.  The more You paid in, the higher Your stipend will be, and vise versa.

ThundersCry -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/8/2008 6:31:41 PM)

Thanks...

A realllllllllll compliment from one like...you.

<grins>

Chew on that...

You weren't.  Unless they are severely handicapped, damn few people are ever unemployable.  Two hands, two legs, functioning brain == employable.

hmmmmm......cryptic Thunder...

by the way TC, I never bite off more than I can chew.[:D]

Point taken -- poor word choice.  Instead i should have said 'too bad i didn't know i'd still be an unskilled worker when i graduated.'
