I've read the list and I have lived worse. I have lived where the people on that list would be rich compared to me!

SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/7/2008 5:31:17 PM)

so many of those are true, been there done quite a few of them.  but if i had "friends" i couldnt trust enough to leave money laying around, they wouldnt be in my house, much less called friends.

only thing ill say that is wrong about that one is the free lunch thing....its a violation of regulations, and a fireable offense, to let anyone, other than the students parents or guardians, know who is free or reduced.

that includes principals and faculty too....ive been cussed by many of em-lol.

carry on....

pissthirstysub -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/7/2008 5:34:40 PM)

I don't think I agree with some of the authors' markers for poverty, some of them feel a bit pretentious.

kittinSol -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/7/2008 5:37:36 PM)

Being poor is having loads of money and being scared of nothing more than loosing it all.

fungasm -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/7/2008 5:41:09 PM)

Being Poor sucks. But you get an education- and you work hard and you can get to something better.  Unlike the rest of the world. 98% of the "poor" in this country have a television.  80% have a car. Almost everyone has access to libraries with free books.  There are free lunches and free dental clinics, and it's possible to get by with very little.  Life isn't as nice as it is for those higher on the economic ladder, but you aren't dying of starvation like some other parts of the world.  You don't have to try and make your entire family's meals for a month from two pounds of rice, or live on the equivalent of $10 a month like most of the world.

We have it good. Even those of us in Europe and the United States who don't have so good- have it good. Let us not bitch about what we don't have- and instead work towards making it better for everyone.

Irishknight -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/7/2008 5:44:43 PM)

SCREW THEM!!!!!!  IT'S ALL MINE!!!!!!

I mean ... yes ... we need to help others.

DomAviator -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/7/2008 5:56:16 PM)

Some of them are downright stupid. I did four years of night classes for an associates degree - when I already had a bachelors and two masters. Ive hoped the toothache goes away and it was my own vanity - not poverty that caused it via an elective procedure. LOL.

However, I STILL dont feel sorry for the poor. A loaf of bread is 87 cents at my local Walmart. I would be damned if I would serve my kid a slice that a roach walked on... If need be I would go out and walk the streets picking up aluminum cans to get a new loaf of bread!

Funny thing about a lot of the "desparately poor" - they have lots of cool yet expensive toys from the local rent-to-own store. They have no shortage of $3 a bag Doritos - and not the generics either, they go to mcDonalds, they always have a pack of cigarettes or a bottle of malt liqour etc...

There is no excuse for poverty in America except laziness. I have said this many times before - the illegal alien who picks up my dog shit for $5 a week pulls in 90K when you do the math!

kittinSol -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/7/2008 5:57:29 PM)

I won't beg to differ here.  I will simply tell you that you are talking from ingnorance.  There are real and valid reasons for poverty in this highest of nations, where the little man can grow strong and utilize what is available to build themselves and have a better life.  But just for you, let me give you a couple of real reasons for poverty.

Number One... illness.

Number two... fathers who leave children.  (did you know that in our own senate and congress, that at a time in the 70's when a bill concerning child support was on the table, that the majority of those voting on the bill, that paid child support, were not paying?)

Number three... the ecomomy

I have directed a homeless shelter and taught people to build themselves and change their lives.  I now live in that poverty.  Yes, I do have a computer and online.  I have had some better times and I prepared for this time of poverty.  But it is a struggle to keep that online on.  I do give up food to have it.  Why?  Because I am ill and I cannot get out of my house and I care for a brain damaged son and if I couldn't get out of my little world... well.. I would go postal.  Can I go pick up cans?  No, I can barely walk to the bathroom.  Can I get a job?  Not since 911 ruined my business I could do on my good days.  Can I get help from the government... no.  I live on money from past due child support my ex didn't pay for fourteen years.  To bad my kids didn't have that when it counted and when the doctors didn't have a clue as to what was wrong with me.

Before you vomit on people... you might want to think about the ingnorance you are spilling from that well edcuated mind.

FullCircle -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/7/2008 6:37:24 PM)

None of those things listed meet my definition of poverty.

Try drinking water that hasn't been purified and hoping your immune system has been built up enough to resist the nasties.

kiwisub12 -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/7/2008 6:42:48 PM)

Its easy to pontificate on being poor, but it is like judging someone who stays in an abusive relationship - its easy to say what they should do, but since we aren't in their shoes, we can't judge. We don't know the circumstances.

abcbsex -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/7/2008 6:44:44 PM)

You're only poor if you're ashamed of being able to apply the list to yourself. I got offended by a lot of these items, I've been to a country very near to us where a piece of bread with only one cockroach running across it would be acceptable, where a real floor is a luxury, and the people are sometimes richer in happiness than any distant, tv-addicted suburban family could be. Poor is a state of mind, a constant state of comparison.

Said with class and dignity...not sure I would concede the well educated mind thing so readily though

Ha Ha Ha... FYI I have one dog, a yellow lab. The man charges $5 per week for the first dog - $2 for each addl. For $5 it is not worth it for me to pick the Labrador Landmines out of my backyard. The man has six clients on my street - some of whom have two or three dogs and thus pay $7 or $9. It takes him less than a half an hour to service the six accounts on my street afterwhich he goes to the next block and so forth. Figure he is averaging 45 min per hour of work excluding travel time - even at the 1 dog rate thats $45 per hour or over a 2,000 hour work year - $90,000... I give him credit, he earns his money instead of bitching about poverty and hes come up with a damn fine opportunity that requires no education and essentially no start up costs - a box of latex gloves and a trash bag??? If he can do it, speaking almost NO English, anyone can. Opportunity is there - some are just too lazy to do it. I will gladly pay for services - whether its cleaning, grocery shopping, or food delivery,  one of these days I just might hire a designated ass wiper if someone comes up with that.

While I appreciate you position and empathize with your medical condition, did it occur to you that - armed with a computer, internet connectivity, and the ability to type you have everything necessary to generate income without the assistance of either the govt or your ex-husband?

A few suggestions - which I hope you will take in the spirit intended - www.elance.com is a marketplace for freelance work as is www.guru.com . You can also advertise, for free, in the business services area of Craigslist.

You could also learn, entirely for free online, how to do programming such as PHP or HTML and to use these new skills either to undertake lucrative freelance work or to open yourself a revenue generating online business. For example, there is a FREE dating site package called osDate which installs in minutes. Once you learn how to customize it, which you can do simply by reading the documentation, you can own your own revenue generating online business... Or you could install Moodle, another GNU free package to open an online school to teach some skill for a fee... In either case total investment $10 for a domain name and you can put it in free hosting. It may not make much initially - but it will certainly subsidize your internet use without having to cut into your food budget.

As I mentioned with the dogshit picker upper guy, opportunity is where you find it and if you cannot find it then make it. Hope this helps you.

Once again... only this time you are talking out the other end.  Darling... do you think that with my background I haven't checked into everything I could do?  Including gov. craigslist, etc.

I have strokes which take a bit of my mind every time I have one and I have an average of seven a month.  My son can be up for two days or sleep for one and if I don't sleep when he does, which I often cannot, I am brain dead awake.

Now... I am trying... I write my little porn stories and hope to find a way to pick up a little cash here and there.  I counsel others who are ill or simply have a great life and don't know what to do with it in how to be happy.  I do what I can.

I am thankful however that you did try to assist me, but before you so readily open your mouth and speak... you might put a little thought to what people might actually do to help themselves before you judge that they have not.

Griswold -> RE: Being Poor... ( discuss ) (6/7/2008 8:06:02 PM)

That's a fairly long list.
