Level -> James Dobson to blast Obama (6/24/2008 3:53:33 AM)

quote:

As Barack Obama broadens his outreach to evangelical voters, one of the movement’s biggest names, James Dobson, accuses the likely Democratic presidential nominee of distorting the Bible and pushing a “fruitcake interpretation” of the Constitution.

The criticism, to be aired Tuesday on Dobson’s Focus on the Family radio program, comes shortly after an Obama aide suggested a meeting at the organization’s headquarters here, said Tom Minnery, senior vice president for government and public policy at Focus on the Family.

Dobson took aim at examples Obama cited in asking which Biblical passages should guide public policy - chapters like Leviticus, which Obama said suggests slavery is OK and eating shellfish is an abomination, or Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, “a passage that is so radical that it’s doubtful that our own Defense Department would survive its application.”

“I think he’s deliberately distorting the traditional understanding of the Bible to fit his own worldview, his own confused theology,” Dobson said.

“… He is dragging biblical understanding through the gutter.”

Dobson's already blasted McCain.  This is only equal time.

Owner59 -> RE: James Dobson to blast Obama (6/24/2008 7:42:37 AM)

This guy says Mr. Obama, is destorting the bible?!?!!!!!

ROTFLMAO!!!!

Jesus was a liberal socialist activist who gave away free health care and who worried about the poor and people in prison.I think it`s the rightie nutties who have strayed from the pack.

Who the fuck is he to say that liberals have the bible wrong? It`s conservatives that have diminished and dumbed down the bible`s meanings and lessons.

One of my greatest hopes is that Mr. Obama engages the future debates passionately and with conviction.Whether they be about religion or Iraq, terrorism or the economy,I want the debate. I don`t want cutcie tricks and stunts and non-debate.

I hope he won`t cower away from the bullies like Dobson,Pat Robertson,Hagee, etc, but will rather man up and say his piece and then let people decide who`s argument holds water.

IMO Christo-fascism is a cancer on the church and needs to be debated. There are millions of faithful democrats and liberals. They don`t make much noise b/c they don`t wear their religion on their sleeves and don`t beat others over their heads w/ it either.

Jesus spoke about social justice and taking care of the weakest among us,feeding the hungry, clothing the naked, aiding the sick,counseling/caring for people in prison, etc.

He didn`t say jack shit about gay rights or abortion. How the fuck did those things become the main issues and not what Jesus spoke about?

Where have you been for the last 30 years?

Don`t republicans refer to themselves as God`s Own Party?Or the party of god?

Remember the arrogance of the "Moral Majority" with it`s implication about liberals?

The nutter McCain preacher who said America was made by god to destroy Islam?

James Dobson...of Focus on the Family...nice little daily radio snippit....but seriously dude, not the mouthpiece of all Christians!  We're not all judgement bearing, gay-bashing, anti-choice, pro-death penalty nutters.  Just as all liberals don't eat granola, all right wingers aren't  racists....etc.  Actually, whatever group of people one affilitates with from time to time is bound to be offensively judged by another group of people.  There's nothing some people love more than feeling smug and superior.  Calling people crazy because of their beliefs is right up there with thinking all kinksters are mentally ill, or "sick".
edited to add...Yikes! HK...this: "There's nothing some people love more than feeling smug and superior "wasn't directed at you...just read the post and realized it could be misconstrued that way...though you think i'm mentally ill[;)], i still like you too much to be mean to you....

Speaking has one raised Irish Catholic,I in principal agree with all You say here's the rub though, when do we take back the Christian Religion from these fruitcakes, when do christians stop supporting and subsidizing these prophets of hate and venom.Much like the world keeps waiting for moderate Islam to decry their loonys...when will Christians of all stripes decry these nuts

Well dammmmm.... all of the Focus on the Familyists who were fired up and ready to vote for a young black Democrat presidential candidate, are just going to have to wait until they can find one of which Dobson approves....[sm=rofl.gif]
