I wish I could come up with a way to weave in the old chestnut 'The pot calling the kettle black'.

I am sure we are going to hear all sorts of things like that, the next four years, and he will still be only James Dobson...idiot extrordinaire.

Some major religions pay people to read the Bible for them and tell the congregation what it means... others stand ready to kill on that basis of things that were never in the Bible, such as the King James added bit about killing witches, or Biblical interpretations that OK forced child brides and spousal abuse (nothing beautiful about those 'perceptions'), or the rewording of the 6th commandment...
And many claim to literally follow the Bible, but are full of excuses as to why the Bible doesn't really mean what it clearly says, when their actions fail to match scriptural admonishments. Mark Twain had a great riff about the difference between 'practicing' Christians, and 'practical' Christians.

From time to time I've heard Evangelicals and Fundamentalists state that Catholics, for instance, are discouraged from reading the bible (wrong)...or that other folks just listen passively and don't read for themselves (quite probable, but read below..)

However, these same folks will believe everything their pastor states in a sermon, where he may be skipping from one passage to another in the Bible [cherry picking the passages that support his ideas], completely removing the context of the writings.  And if you come up with a different interpretation, you'll soon find yourself being disciplined or even expelled from fellowship [this is one of the reasons why Bill Moyers left the Southern Baptist Convention.]

And John McLaughlin left the Jesuit Priesthood to get him some pussy.

A noble calling away from the priesthood in my estimation.

I've always heard Jesuits and Catholic priests were randy old bastards who were happy to utilise the comfy confines of the confessional to extract sexual favours from their 'ouailles' [8D]. Defrocked is all very sexy, but the legend goes that the habit does not deter the monks from screwing anything that breathes.

Well dammmmm.... all of the Focus on the Familyists who were fired up and ready to vote for a young black Democrat presidential candidate, are just going to have to wait until they can find one of which Dobson approves....[sm=rofl.gif]

Exactly.  It's like all those people who discuss the racists who will not vote for Obama because he's black... I doubt that any of them would vote for a liberal Democrat anyway.

Back on topic...

1. I am amazed that Dobson, who said of McCain simply that he disliked McCain so much he would rather stay home than vote for him, is actually picking a theological debate with Obama.  Dobson is actually giving Obama the opportunity to espouse Christianity nationally without penalty, and to engage in debate and look like a man of faith who understands his own religion.  A gift.

2. Dobson should have expressed himself a LOT better.  By saying in effect that the New Testament trumps the Old Testament, he is distancing modern day Christians from Jews (who follow only the Old Testament).  He should have said something like that Jesus' laws in the New Testament have supplanted and expanded the Old Testament laws, not that they were made irrelevant.

I have not come to destroy the law, but fulfill it.

Me?  I knew my calling was pussy, right outta the box.  Never a theological question about it.

I've tried reading Dobson, (around 1992, when the Colorado Ammendment #2 was gaining support, and his nazis were in support of it.) I've never read such backward, anti-human rights rubbish in my life! This prick was actually in support of a bill in CA, that would have made "gay deprogramming" mandatory upon detection... brain washing as law!

I have since taken to finding his books in whatever city I live in, and write on the inside covers, using a sharpie: "Caution: this book is full of lies."

Well at least people aren't so damn judgemental when they find out that guitar players like John are only in it for the sex...[:D]
