Oh, you *really* should be watching the current incarnation of Battlestar Galactica. Baltar's on this monotheistic kick, and his message is: "Since G-d is perfect, and G-d created ME, *I* am perfect and my imperfections are part of my perfection."

They just finished up their season ( they pitch it as a mid-season break, but WTF, just go with it and call it a season and move on to the next one... ) so you have a while to get caught up before it restarts..

DomKen -> RE: James Dobson to blast Obama (6/26/2008 9:56:58 AM)

If the guy playin Baltar wasn't so horribly bad at acting it would be quite a fun subplot. Lone half mad messiah with harem of faithful and available female followers. Unfortunately the guys emotional range seems to based on him imitating different degrees of constipation.

Owner59 -> RE: James Dobson to blast Obama (6/26/2008 12:29:33 PM)

Try talking to Mr. Obama, he is the one who seems confused as to which branch or dogma he is supposed to use to base his ethics and  morality on.
i presume, and actually hope, that he has some basis on which to base his morality and choices.   it would make more sense than having him tailor his morality to expand his voter base.
And what is he confused about?

Specifically.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All he said was there are to many religions,even to many forms of just the Christian religion(s) to have any one one them and it`s canons influencing government and the laws we all live under.
What did Mr Obama say that was wrong?
What dogma is he imposing on us?
If it`s the "dogma" of live and let live,I can live with that.
Concern:  the thought of translating concerns into universal terms smacks of Orwellian Newspeak, and is a pretty scary thought to hear from someone who has already attempted to redefine "person".
He was speaking in hypothetical.
Do you know what that means, as far as context and meaning?
i think i might be able to puzzle this out.  in order for a hypothesis to be workable, part of the premise has to be workable or conceivable and the conclusions have to follow the premises.
If, for example, the country became "Christian" only, it would likely be a result of a group expelling any other religion or sect.  The most powerful of those groups would be the one to dictate the way that scripture is taught.  It would and should be a difficult or impossible feat, as that is what the founding fathers were trying to promote with the concept of separation of church and state, as well as freedom of religion.  The premise, or conditional clause of his hypothesis (that is the word you wanted me to work with, isn't it?) is preposterous.  Therefore the conclusions are not of great import.
   Now his proposal of universal translation of religious concepts is not presented hypothetically, nor is his slam that folks don't read their bibles.  That folks debate their perceptions of the bible is part of the beauty and meaning behind freedom of religion.
There are millions of faithful republicans and conservatives.They don`t make much noise b/c they don`t wear their religion on their sleeves and don`t beat others over their heads w/ it either.
Where have you been for the last 30 years?
Michigan and florida, why?
Don`t republicans refer to themselves as God`s Own Party?Or the party of god?
I know a lot of republicans and I have never heard one of them refer to the party like that.
Remember the arrogance of the "Moral Majority" with it`s implication about liberals?
Yup, there are wackjobs on both sides, your point?
The nutter McCain preacher who said America was made by god to destroy Islam?
Too bad you didn't follow the links.  You might have learned something about your own party.  I mean, for God's sake (pun intended), George Bush spoke repeatedly about his belief that God wanted him to be President.
I have been waiting for a place to post this:
When it comes to bullshit, big-time, major league bullshit, you have to stand in awe of the all-time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims, religion. No contest. No contest. Religion. Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told. Think about it. Religion has actually convinced people that there's an invisible man living in the sky who watches everything you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a special list of ten things he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place, full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish, where he will send you to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry forever and ever 'til the end of time!
But He loves you. He loves you, and He needs money! He always needs money! He's all-powerful, all-perfect, all-knowing, and all-wise, somehow just can't handle money! Religion takes in billions of dollars, they pay no taxes, and they always need a little more. Now, you talk about a good bullshit story. Holy Shit!
George Carlin, 1999.
RIP, funny guy.
When the religious zealots start interfering in politics I am reminded of,  "The Handmaid's Tale"
Ms. Atwwod's book is far superior and disturbing than the movie.
Vendaval -> RE: James Dobson to blast Obama (6/26/2008 2:43:20 PM)
Of course the novel is superior to the screenplay.  The plot summary on IMDB is easier reading for the discussion though. [;)]
CONFUSED and Constipated, at that... He sure do have 'bewilderment' down pat, doesn't he?
That  'folks don't read their Bibles' is more of an honest assessment, than a slam, in the same way that a doctor might assess that 'folks are eating too much'.
Some major religions pay people to read the Bible for them and tell the congregation what it means... others stand ready to kill on that basis of things that were never in the Bible, such as the King James added bit about killing witches, or Biblical interpretations that OK forced child brides and spousal abuse (nothing beautiful about those 'perceptions'), or the rewording of the 6th commandment...
And many claim to literally follow the Bible, but are full of excuses as to why the Bible doesn't really mean what it clearly says, when their actions fail to match scriptural admonishments. Mark Twain had a great riff about the difference between 'practicing' Christians, and 'practical' Christians.
And Dobson is not coming from a place of beauty, or Christian spirit in a good way, when he turns his dominionist creed on this election.
atursvcMaam -> RE: James Dobson to blast Obama (6/27/2008 10:41:03 PM)
    First and foremost, Dobson's view of the world is as off the mark as is Obama's, or vice versa, they both have a bizarre view of the world in general.  Obama's view has more of a negative impact on me, because i do not expect that Dobson has the capacity to be our next president.  Quite honestly, i had not heard of Dobson prior to this week, and religious fundamentalists (zealots) tend to put me quickly to sleep.  The expression that drove me out of the Catholic Church was "...but he is not of our faith"  which i took as an exclusionist, very un-Christlike statement
     That having been said, i am very leary of folks who feel that, because i do not agree with them, that i am not erudite, and am incapable of understanding their point of view without them having to translate things into simpler or more universal terms.  If this is a new phase of "You're a racist" then you were indeed correct earlier when you said "It is going to be a long campaign season".
Alumbrado -> RE: James Dobson to blast Obama (6/28/2008 4:45:55 AM)
Or is it a new phase of racists using things like religion to keep their nightmare of a black president from happening?
thishereboi -> RE: James Dobson to blast Obama (6/28/2008 6:08:57 AM)
I read them, just not then. Like I said, the park was waiting and I must keep priorities straight and all.
I don't remember Bush making the comment, but it wouldn't surprise me. What does surprise me, is how people can drag Bush's name into every thread, whether he is mentioned or not. Makes me wonder if you dream about him at night and what will you do when the election is over? Guess you will have to come up with someone else to obsess over. Maybe you could find someone to talk to about it. There are some really good counselors out there and it might help.
bipolarber -> RE: James Dobson to blast Obama (6/28/2008 8:35:50 AM)
Carlin's routine is one of the reasons I tell people that I'm a believer in "The Flying Spaghetti Monster" (pastafarian) Of course, they take it as a slap in the face when you confront their beliefs with something equally absurd. The fact that the BS is 4000 year ols makes no difference to the fact that it's all just men "makin' shit up."
The problem is, many who were programmed by this poison since early childhood, feel it is their obligation to force us all, via legislation, to live the way they think we should. They want to turn the US into a theocracy. (And all other theocracies have worked out so well, haven't they?) Look at LA, which just signed the teaching of Creationisim in high school science classes into law as an example.
If you want to take the Bible as literal, then we can all expect the US to turn into the world portrayed in the film "The Handmaid's Tale." They will establish themselves as the final authority, if we let them. Gays and lesbians will be branded "gender traitors" and imprisoned, given lobotomies, or hung for their crimes. Women will be reduced to chattel, and the Earth will continue to be raped of it's resources, and shit on in the form of unregulated pollution.
The first step will be to pack the Supreme Court, so that their voice will be the only one heard where it counts. Currently, three of the supreme court justices are waiting until after the election until they retire, just so Bush can't choose their successors. If McCain (who is in near total agreement with Bush's agenda)  gets in, we can assume that he will pick only GOP asshats to sit on the bench... with Obama, balance will remain, and tyranny will be averted. Straights, gays, lesbians and other minorities might maintain their hard won equality... and women in general will retain their right to their own bodies' reproductive systems. (i.e. they will be seen as people. Not as a womb support system.)
That Dobson is a psychopath is indisputable.
But you claim that Obama's worldview is as bizarre as Dobson's.
How so? Do you have anything specific, or is this another partisan slam?
Still waiting for your examples of how Mr.Obama`s beliefs aren`t normal or mainstream.
What is bizarre or "off the mark" about Obama`s views?
Not your opinion about them,but examples of why we all would think they`re bizarre.
This is a discussion board.You have more to convince than yourself,here.
Comparing the two men or saying one is as bad as the other,makes me think you`re not involved in political issues or reading the news.
