I think the people who have answered so far have been very accurate.  Human beings typically enjoy a sense of community, a sense of belonging.  I think that it stands to reason that the boards mirror real-time as well, whether good or bad.  If like-minded people find friends here, then what is the problem?  There are times in the real world that the bond people share will carry over like a tidal wave of silliness, and on the flip side, like a lynch mob going after Frankenstein.  It just depends on the topic and the emotions involved.  On the other hand, if there is someone who constantly tries to joust at dragons and windmills in what appears to be an attempt at "showing his/her ass," then I tend to believe that the person gets what is coming to him/her.

There have been plenty of times where my opinion hasn't jived with the general population here, but I don't go around with my hands on my hips on the boards, acting like a know-it-all shrew.  (I used up that shit during my marriage, lol.)  There's a way to get one's point across without pissing off everyone around.  I think that people on here tend to be pretty good judges of character and lack thereof.

As to the question of "alleged" meetings and real-time friendships between folks on here, well, I don't think I have hallucinated all the people I've met here.  If that's the case, I want to know who ate all the food for my "make-believe" birthday party/CM meet & greet that "allegedly" took place at The Crucible on May 10th.  Damn.  I wonder if the "make-believe" cake I ate had any calories?  Who gave me the birthday spanking that made my ass all purple, black & blue?  Was that my "pretend" ass that was pictured in a thread about the "supposed" party?  I would've picked a sexier ass if it weren't my real one.  I guess I sent 46 "Thank-You's" to imaginary CM people in error then.  Damn...  I just can't win.

I agree too that hijacking is annoying.

There is a forum for discussions about meeting people real time.  It's called 'Postive Experiences' and its on the 'Introductions' board.  Posting an Op or post where it doesn't belong is annying, IMO.

Perhaps it's just a cycle and it will pass, as all things seem to do.

I still don't see anyone explaining what the payoff is, though.

I admit I'm nosey.  I'd still like to know.

Some of us are online friends.. some are in real lifefriends.. for some of us the real reason why the board exisits it to well.. *make* friends.

To me friends go to each others houses.. go on vacations together.. meet up.. go to dinner.. and the movies. hell some are close enough to travel cross state, country, or half way around the world.

Some of us are that way.

Some of us live in a desirable location like Florida where folks like to come anyways.. so we are lucky.. and visited often.

We have a *Community* here. Not a Clique. This is not High School...

For the most part we all get along, like and or tollerate each other well.. and share our ups and downs of life with one another. Online and off. That is what friends do.

If you do not like a sense of online community with friendships.. there is always alt where it is who is the bigger badder bitch, or cyber sex 24/7. However we have worked long and hard at building up our community and like it very much.

I look forward to meeting even more of my online friends in person at the end of the month.. and then in Oct at a local convention.

Gwyn,
Who is blessed to live by GreedyTop who was *friend* enough to help her move for 10 hours on Saturday. ( Now *That* is true friendship )

while i don't entirely agree with the OP i think that i can see where she comes from. there is a group of individuals who post here frequently, who do interact with each other in real life, and talk about it a lot (more power to you. i wish more people had a strong friendship network). if you're on the outside looking in, it can seem sort of ... stand off-ish, like there are multiple insider jokes that you're not important/special enough to be in on.

that being said, EVERY website that i'm on is like that, even the handspinner's list that i'm on on yahoo has it to an extent. to expect otherwise is unrealistic.

There's a clique? Damn, and I didn't get invited.

I don't see that. I do see people who approach situations from a viewpoint that others also share. And naturally enough, we prefer to talk to people who think we rock rather than think we're slime. Don't you? Or do you prefer to spend time with people who you vehemently disagree with and don't respect?

The payoff is none other than good old fashioned fun.  I for one am thankful that there is more to sign on to the forums to read than just General BDSM.  You can only intelectualize so much before you want to kick something.  When you follow the posts of those who are both intellectual and witty, kind and generous with their knowledge, who don't take this whole online moshpit of mentalities too seriously, you find things worth reading.  I'd rather gleen more from someone's wit and humor, than wade through 20 posts a day of inane pseudo-intellectualism snarkiness disguised as an inquisitive 'need to know'.

Wow, I hope that's not an alleged plane ticket I bought.  It's gonna suck big time when I attempt to allegedly go to Florida for my alleged vacation.

OP:

for me, the point of being on these forums is the chance to talk with people, exchange ideas, share bits of ourselves (sometimes in the hope that others have experienced it and can offer advice and/or empathy, sometimes in the hope that our experiences may help someone else going through it), have fun, and kill time.
The PAYOFF is that I've been fortunate enough to meet several wonderful people from these boards.  I have been fortunate that others, whom I have not yet met face to face, have alllowed me to get to know them via the forums/email/phone/whatever (and we hope to meet at some point).
Do I sometimes make reference to the meetings I've had? Yes.. and why shouldn't I or anyone else do so? They were fun, the people were fun... and I enjoy sharing that with other people.  Besides, with all the threads I've seen about "does anyone ever meet off here" etc., I like to think that by talking some about the meetings MAYBE it will encourage someone who is feeling like they'll never meet anyone...
As far as posting on whichever threads.. why are YOU wrorried about it? If the Mods feel the posting is in the wrong place, they'll move it.
Can it seem cliquish? Well, sure.. but people are people.

Am I fake? meh.. I'm flesh and blood and bone...or I was, last I checked.

i'm going to start needing a score card here soon: according to His coworkers we are engaged (which we really are we just had no intention of telling anyone for say a year), not engaged, not even dating any more, engaged again, potentially married, a slim chance i'm pregnant (or so we're guessing we don't know what else could be next) and now He doesn't even exist. sigh. its a good thing i'm still not working or i wouldn't have the time to keep this all straight...
