quote:
ORIGINAL: PainSmith Comedian versus comedienne, actor versus actress, waiter versus waitress, the English language is full of places where different words are used to describe a man or a woman doing the same job. Sometimes the distinctions are dubious, when gender doesn't really affect a role, but sometimes they're important because gender provides an essential something. The role played by an actress is different to that of an actor, even if the skills are the same. The role played by a domme is different to that played by a dom, even if most of the skills are the same. By that logic, we should be using subbe, toppe, bottomme, slavess, switchette... We don't, though. We use genderless terms for all of those things. There really isn't any reason that dom should be any different.
