Actually, I find it much easier to paint my toenails, because I can use my right hand to do both feet. When I try to paint my own fingernails, the left hand looks nice but the nails on my right hand (because they were painted by my less talented left hand) end up looking as though I allowed a two year old to paint them.
And I always use neutral colors for my fingernails because more people see my hands than my toes. The red on my toes is like a naughty little secret between Papa and I. I might be the prim and proper looking housewife to the outside world, but when I come home and get comfy, I am his naughty hussy with the racy red nails and matching lips. It is just our shtick.

Glad to be ambidextrous then. Makes nail-painting and mascara-applying much easier too. I write with my left-hand, but my nails look impeccable on both hands. I don't do my toes.

The women I know that go crazy with the toenails do so because they cannot go crazy with the fingernails.

Until recently (in fact, I believe it was as recently as January this year), I never polished my toes anything other than clear or barely-there beige (think "skin color"). I have always disliked my feet... the feet in my family resemble those of Fred Flintstone - large and square and our toes - uggghhh!!! Short and stubby like a kid. I never wore open-toe shoes or open-toe sandals, because I didn't want these short stubby toes showing.

Well, part of this whole self-discovery makeover thingy I've got going involves accepting that my feet are what they are, they're never going to change, so dangitall, I'm going RED!!!!!! And I bought open-toe sandals and I wear them all the time!

The polish I use is a bit pricy at about $8 or so a bottle, but it's worth it (and it lasts a long time). With one topcoat, the polish NEVER chips. I usually do the toes myself, but I do pay for manicures with acrylic brushed on top of my regular nails (at $14 every 3 weeks, it is one of my few indulgences). I usually touch up the tips of my nails where the color wears off once or perhaps twice (depending on what I've been doing) between manicures. The only reason I go to the salon every 3 weeks is that my nails grow so fast.

cali, my feet are deformed and i've always been similarly insecure with regards to showing them or painting my toenails. your post just gave me the biggest smile. you are such an inspiration! just thought you should know.

That's ludicris! That's the insistence of stagnant imaginations! The one thing we know about "Fashion Rules" is there are no rules! It's most fun to do a very classic "french" manicure using OPI's nude beach paired with a Chanel "Vamp" pedicure or juxtapose OPI's Russian Navy on nails with Nars "Capri" on toes, and for fun give both a coat of Nars "Zizi". Isn't exploration and experimentationwhat wer'e all about?

MAC polish- worth every cent of ten bucks! Very quick drying, easy off, and on, and great colors. But quick drying is important. I have things to do. Sitting around with my nails held up drives me nuts.
Why do women paint toes but not fingers? Because a solid pedicure with cheap Quick Dry by Maybelline will last and last, but fingernails chip, irritate your eyes putting in contacts, and don't look very good after a day in a painting studio smeared by solvents and with a lot of colors spattered on. Did I say MAC was really quick and easy to get off?
Getting it off quick and whisking on a quick fresh mani always goes over well on special nights; Special Playmate understands why nails are a compromise. I like long and bright pink, but again- I have things to do and that doesn't stand a chance... So they're almost short and buffed a lot of the time. I find MAC polish is like putting on lipstick, very quick and easy right before dinner if I'm not cooking it.
But toenails- electric blue! great in the summer and looks fine. Different women can carry different odd colors. Blue toenails is mine. Although if instructed...

slave is Master's property, every aspect and detail about His property is important to Him. In the ways that He wishes to be specific to His liking He has instructed His slave. As to any details Master has not instructed, His slave attempts to find ways in which to make Masters property more pleasing by keeping her nails (both hands and feet) clean, neat and either plan or with polish (no chipping polish or smudges). slave has noticed that Master does not enjoy slaves purple nail polish so slave does not use it....poor pretty purple nail polish now sits alone unused....:)

Of course body/looks-maintenance as this is important.

What kind of man doesn't care if a gal showed up with stubby chewed or chipped fingernails or yellowing toe nails?

What kind of woman wouldn't put effort into looking 'feminine', clean and well-maintained?

When I meet anyone (for a weekend or even to go grocery shopping) I take the time to look decent (or more so). For a simple weekend it takes time and effort to prep..packing, nails, kitty (twat) maintenance, hair (cut, color, curl), picking out the right shoes so that even the nailpolish doesn't clash with them.

If I showed up, all messy, unorganized and my nails weren't done...it is obvious I think of our meeting as 'a trip to a farm to pick blueberries in the mud day". Obviously, no effort = I don't care or respect you.

I take that time as well especially since we only get together every 12 weeks, so I spend a lot of prep time in part because it is my ritual. It is a part of the build up and anticipation as well as a great outlet for the jitters I always always get.

Generally though I don't. I don't have a 'hairstyle', wear makeup or do my nails. None of that makes me appear less feminine though, nor do I feel less feminine. I wear dresses or jeans. Often barefoot and my hair in a ponytail. I'm still feminine because it is a part of me and not something that I buy in a bottle.

I don't see it as 'no effort, no care' at all. Instead I see it as a different facet of my appearance and have never lost respect from anyone I know for not being manicured or gained respect for those times when I do go all out.

If I were looked at differently by him during the times when I am not all girlified then there would be a pretty big problem and it would mean that I had sorely misjudged his concept of who I actually am and not how I look from day to day.

Now I have to go find the perfect nail polish because my countdown is at 10 days! Oh and my hair needs trimmed.. and I need new lacy boyshort panties

Yes Camille, not only a ritual, but a preparing mindset to be pleasing (in appearance anyways). The looks of it all are only partially ritualistic, the easy part.

Cali great post!

A little off topic here, but if more women would take this attitude and realize that they have fantastic bodies and show them off and make the best of what they have, I would think there would be less "self image issues".

I love camille's term of "girlified" - kind of sums it all up for me.

Now back on topic - I splurge on my nails. I work in an environment where I need to look put together and I'm lucky that I can have keep my nails done. I go every 2-3 weeks have a gel overlay put on my nails and I've been doing them french for some time now. At the same time, I have a pedicure done - I love open toed shoes and going barefoot. And like Cali - I love red.
