We already have it.  There you go:

http://www.walgreens.com/search/search_results.jsp?_dyncharset=ASCII&term=condoms

Note that they come in several different price ranges, styles, sizes, colors, etc.
If those prices are too steep for you, go down to your county health department.  I don't know about where you live, but they give them away in large quantities here for free.  I've been using condoms since I was 16; trust me they are reliable.

Maybe I misread but I thought the artical was saying birth control wasnt stopping the release of an egg but prevening it from being caught by the lining there for it was "abortion"... meaning women on birth control will test postive for being pregnant. Doesnt testing before administering or readministering kind of disprove that?

kittinSol -> RE: Birth control = abortion? (7/22/2008 10:30:34 AM)

Are IUDs ever used as a means to terminate an early pregnancy in the US?

Ill be the first to say, Condoms break, and usually often, In fact most condoms barely withstand one or two position changes...

That's true. It brings me to wonder whether condoms aren't in fact manufactured in the Vatican.

CalifChick -> RE: Birth control = abortion? (7/22/2008 10:36:05 AM)

Alot of people misunderstood what I said.  I believe the article said that some groups say that the pill does NOT prevent an egg from fertilizing, but merely stops it from implanting.  Therefore, if you have a fertilized egg and it's floating happily toward implantation, they consider you already pregnant but THERE IS NO TEST for that, so therefore a woman CANNOT prove by peeing on a stick that she is NOT pregnant.

I didn't say I believed this line of thinking, I'm saying that's what I understood that I read.

That reminds me of the joke what do bottle nipples and condoms have in common?

they are made in the same factory and both have holes poked in them.

hopelessfool -> RE: Birth control = abortion? (7/22/2008 10:38:51 AM)

Actually they can test by seeing if particular hormones are present in the body.  It takes a blood test, and is usually expensive depending on where you get it done....

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: Birth control = abortion? (7/22/2008 10:45:34 AM)

In the event that anyone here -cares- how birth control pills work, here's a brief physiological run-down.

Birth control pills are typically made up of estrogen and progesterone, in a carefully balanced proportion. The high levels of estrogen and increased progesterone fool the body into thinking that it is ALREADY PREGNANT, preventing ripening and release of the ova (in 99.75% of women taking the pill).

Most women who are on birth control pills -do not ovulate-. There are, however, a few women who -will- ovulate anyway -- and if a woman can ovulate, she -can- become pregnant, and, in most cases (about 85%) where the egg is fertilized, the pregnancy will implant. In about 15% of cases, the change in hormones results in a "hostile uterus", which does not allow the fertilized ova to implant... but this is 15% of .1% of all women who take oral estrogen/progesterone birth control (or .015%) (Calculated on the basis that this form of birth control is 99.9% effective, and 15% of that .1% of women who get pregnant have 'hostile uterus' created from the hormonal imbalance caused by the birth control pill).

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: Birth control = abortion? (7/22/2008 10:50:29 AM)

No, IUDs are not a viable method for ending pregnancy (abortion) in the US. However, though the new crop of IUDs do contain hormones to suppress ovulation, they -do- actively prevent implantation in most women who -do- happen to get pregnant (the numbers are actually almost an exact flip of the numbers for the birth control pill -- approximately 85% of the women who ovulate and whose egg is fertilized have that egg fail to implant, though some 15% of women who ovulate and have that egg fertilized still have implantation.

To my mind, the modern hormone-filled IUD has all the risks of the pill, plus additional risks that aren't worth getting one.

I will be 33 years old next week.  I have had at least 15 sexual partners in my life (I'm not bragging).  I've never had a condom break on me.  I have no children, and I have never got anyone pregnant.  I have never contracted a sexually transmitted disease.  So condoms apparently work just fine.

If you use condoms correctly, they are very reliable.  It's not difficult to use them correctly.

I don't know where you got these condoms that broke on you, or who you met in your 19 years that managed to break one.  But get one out of the package and blow it up.  Stretch it, pull on it, etc, etc.  You will have a difficult time getting it to break.

hopelessfool -> RE: Birth control = abortion? (7/22/2008 11:06:40 AM)

Ive had 3 break on me with a person and around 50 break with toys. They are rubber. You have been very lucky, but in my case friction causes the rubber to break. Ive used all name brand from lifestyle to durex. They all have the ability to break....

That is just my opinion of it... if I missed something in my research, please point me to it, as I would love to become better informed.

Thadius,

I did some research on the subject and it turns out the source of the story is a leaked White House memo containing a draft of the proposed rule equating birth control to abortion.  Here's a link for you, and the text of the proposed rule is in this article.  I wish it was only a scare tactic.

I would suggest that you purchase name-brand condoms from a reliable store that has decent turnover. In 30 years of sex-life, I've -never- had a condom break... vaginal, anal, toys, you name it... Even filling them with water and tying them to the back of friends' motorcycle seats when they got married (the colorful ones and glow-in-the-dark ones are really cool for this)!

hopelessfool -> RE: Birth control = abortion? (7/22/2008 11:16:15 AM)

Calla what brand do you use? Because Ive tried durex, lifestyle, trojan, reality female condoms.... as well as the ones they offer at planned parent hood (they actually last longer then the others)

Aynne -> RE: Birth control = abortion? (7/22/2008 11:36:27 AM)

Yep. I won't name numbers like slaveboy [;)] but coming of age in the late 80's condoms were a must. Have used them for almost 20 years, and no matter what we were doing, I have never had one break either.

I asked, because it's routinely used as a method of emergency contraception in the UK.

Family planning - the IUD as emergency contraception .

I have to agree with slaveboy, I have never had a condom break on me either.  I have been using them since the 70's and they work fine. Now if I can only find a women to use one with me I'm sure I would have more to add to this subject.

The source of this nuttery is the christian right.

They believe that any sex out of wedlock and not for procreation(and not between a man and a woman) is sinful.Oral sex,butt-sthexth,masturbation,homosexuality,etc. is immoral and wrong.

And birth control is also sinful.Sex for pleasure or sex had without the intention of getting prego is immoral and wrong.Sex education in immoral and wrong.Telling yoots the truth in some cases,is immoral and wrong.

These puritans wish to impose their narrow views on all of society,in any way possible.They think they`re doing god`s work.These neo-cons are some of the most dangerous and deadly people to hold power in Washington DC.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is an example of these extreme views making there way to the top of our nation`s government,ushered in and given the keys by Bush and the neo-cons.
They held up RU486 for years for these same reasons.
~Fast Reply~
What I surmise from the artical is that the Department of Health and Human Services is promoting oral and/or anal sex or perhaps just a nice 'facial'.  Yum!  I'm not a doctor but I'm pretty darned sure you can't get pregnant from swallowing. Worked for me.
*yeah yeah yeah the usual disclaimers about being fluid bonded, use a condom, get tested, be aware that STDS can be transmitted etc etc etc
