Everyone has the choice to chose their particular entertainment venue.  How is a die-hard football or baseball fan any different than a die-hard NASCAR fan?  Does the fact that Mercury Morris or Dan Marino haven't played football in years any less great, for the quality of football players of that time?  Why should Richard Petty or Dale Earnhardt, Sr. be any different?  They loved what they did, and they did it well.

Wow.  That's a pretty strong statement to make.  I'd like to know just what's so disreputable about the humanity of NASCAR drivers.  Seriously, I'm really curious.
quote:

How does the old sayin' go? As rare as hen's teeth? Here's something even more rare: go to a NASCAR event, and try to pick out the woman in the stands who DOESN'T have a black eye...

And I thought what you said above was a bit off.  Wow.  Do you realize how stereotypical, stupid and just flat-out wrong this little statement is?  I've been to races as has my sister and two sisters-in-law.  None of us ever had a black eye.  I think your ignorance of who really attends races these days is showing.  It has become a hugely popular sport with races being sold out to people of the "upper" classes you seem to be more accepting of.  All us black-eyed, po ho's can't hardly afford us no tickets these here days.  All the rich bitches are buyin' 'em up.  And here I'm losing my chance to show off my new shiner.  Get real.  You should be ashamed of such a statement.  Even those who usually express acceptance and some degree of intelligence have their prejudices, I suppose................luci

But all the same this is a rather wide brush you are painting with here.As a recent transplant to the south,I for one have met many a Nascar fan that would not fit into your rather narrow minded viewpoint.

Thank you, Mike, and "amen" to that.............luci

I guess I just don't have the "southern gene" that lets me get all lathered up about this sort of thing. I'll never BE a southerner. I don't like deep fried food, and I don't like being racist. I celebrate MLK day, and not Robert E. Lee Day. Although I know how to hunt, I just don't get all excited about that either...(to me, it's something to do when you don't have the money to buy meat)... fishing is nice though, really peaceful... and I love bluegrass music. I don't like beer, and I don't slap women around (nonconsentually). So I just dont fit in down here all that well.

I wonder why?  Could it be because you seem to think all Southern men and women are shitbags?  The men slap the women and the women don't like it but hang out anyhow.  Yeah, that ONLY happens in the South and EVERY couple is guilty of it.  We're ALL fat racists who love deep-fried food and drinking beer and slaughtering Bambi for sport.  We ALL worship at the altar of Robert E. Lee and loathe MLK.  You're a helluva guy, bipolarber.  What a shining specimen of humanity and a fine example to follow.  If everyone could only be as narrow-minded as you and as proud of it, we'd all be in high cotton.  Lookaway, lookaway, lookaway Dixieland...............luci

And again with the generlizations,do you really believe the men down here in general are slapping their woman around on commercial breaks.(from the race of course)Bipolerber you really need to get a grip....you not only insult every man south of the Mason-Dixon line but Southern Lady's en masse...who apparently stand around and wait for their smack

.  Thanks, slvemike, I'm usually the only person here who even notices such bullshit.  At least someone else thinks it's insane...........luci

Okay, okay... I reverted to using stereotypes. Sorry. You are of course completely right. Not all southern men are abusers. Not all southern folk are racists. (Even though they fought tooth and nail to celebrate a confederate leader on the same day set aside for Rev. King... and my wife loves pointing out the "white power" recruitment ads in the Little Rock paper.)

But I still don't like deep fried food (especially twinkies, snickers bars, and whatever the hell else these folks can think of, to jam on a stick.) Sickening.

I still look at hunting as a survival skill, and not a sport.

And I still think that NASCAR, as a sport, is about as exciting as watching an apple brown.

Feel free to keep ripping away at my opinions. I could care less. But you are right. I should not generalize. What I should have said is that the south seems to have more of a problem with this, (spousal abuse/battered women) than does most of the rest of the country. Which is why I contribute to the local women's shelter on a regular basis. Maybe, since I'm giving to them fairly often, and they send me newsletters (and thank you notes) in return, I just have an overly sensative opinion about the subject.

i'm a white southerner. i'm a lesbian. i am a NASCAR HATER. i DO NOT hunt, nor do i condone it nor do i eat the meat.

i do NOT own one single article of clothing that has the "rebel" flag on it nor will i purchase it for myself, or my kids. nor did i vote to retain the Geogia state flag by arguing that it was heritage not hate..when in fact..if it was all about heritage... then they should truly be happy for the flag change since the rebel flag was introduced to Ga's flag in 1956. i'd like to think my heritage went further back than that.

i do NOT condone racism in this home nor outside of it and have had many a sore day taking up for someone that was not white like me. and i will continue to stand against that injustice, because NOT speaking out is just as bad as being the problem itself.

i think "flesh" colored band-aids were made by whites for whites.

and i think that anyone voting something in for some confederate leader that gave nothing to his people cept prejudice to be not worth the breath it would take to say his name.

i have watched black youths be followed around a store because they were sure they would steal something while i saw for myself 3 white boys walk out with who knows how much merchandise

i think MANY southerners are EXACTLY as you describe, bipolarbear. i see them everyday and watch them swear that they arent. but not all are that way. and hopefully, the ones that have the sense to raise their families another way will change those ways of thinking.

i was a battered woman...as was my Partner. i find that you are correct, it is predominant here in the south. and i see it often in my profession... x-ray tech. people dont really realize how many women come in that are too afraid to say that their beloved husbands did this to them. it is so common that the young girls around here do not even expect it to be different. so that is something those of us know to be untrue must be instilled in our sons and daughters. abuse is not the way.

oh..and for the record..im not dating my cousin.

and bipolar, i enjoyed your post. and i think it helps to have someone that sees it from the inside out as well as from someone who sees it from the outside in

take care and enjoy

PP,

Exactly! Just as God intended! ;)

southernnyte,

Thank you for the supportive post. Still, they are right... I shouldn't spout off generalizations. When you do that, you're almost always wrong. I've been really "snarky" as of late... probably due to me being in a fairly heavy downswing for the last month and a half. I just hope people won't all hate me once I get myself pulled back up again. Being bipolar really does suck at times. :(

I agree, I still can't understand why people want to sit for hours and watch traffic.  I have to drive in it every day, no chance in hell I will spend my free time watching it.

I have not read the rest of this thread.. I really dont think I care to. Being a Southerner.. and oh hell Nascar fan who hunts. I am sure I would labeled as a baby eater or something equaly stooooopid. ( so dumb.. it doesnt even get a U )

Having attended many ( meaning in the dozens) Nascar events since I was 5 years old.. I can tell you this, as she said the poor what some would think of as "Trailer Trash" simply can not afford to travel to, get hotel rooms at higher rates ( the bastards jack them up durring race weeks) and buy the tickets. 1 weekend at Daytona for my son and I would run about $1200. Only beacuse I am just a couple of hours from there.. more if I lived elsewhere. ( not including fan memorbila ) Show me a poor trailer trash couple (with or with out the shiner) who can afford that.

I think it is a hell of a sight easier to pick on Southerners and say they are all this or all that... What the fuck ever. This Southern Belle has equal number of friends who are black or hispanic as she does white.

This Southern Belle also has dated a few black men in her life, and has stood up at NAACP meetings. This Southern Belle would kick the ass of any Mother Fucker who even *thought* of laying a hand on me, or any one I know.

I work hard, I love my neighbor no matter who they are... I pay my taxes, I Vote, and I *am* my brothers keeper.

Living in the North or South does not change any of those things for a great many people. ( I have done both)

Ignorant people live on both sides of the Mason-Dixon line. This whole bloody thread proves that.

Gwyn,
Yankee by birth, Southern Belle by the Grace of God.

is ok.. not many people can get into the technical aspects of it.. it really is more then go left, turn, and go really really fast.

Having been in cars, on tracks.. and knowing the science behind what will win you the race.. ro send your ass packing.. I love it.

I cant get back into Football.. not since the Bears and thier streak with The Fridge was over. never been the same.

If I had a different life... ( and my mother hadnt gotten knocked up with my sister... ) I would prob. have gone on to be a driver.

Gwynvyd,

Well, I went back over my original post on this, and I couldn't find anything that was a statement that I thought "poor people" were like that... in fact, when you read it, it doesn't even say ALL southerners are this or that... but, I can sure as hell see how someone might mis-read it that way... I was commenting on the crowd I've experienced at these events myself, specifically.... (shurg) maybe, knowing my luck, I just happened to be at "the race from hell."

NASCAR is a sport born from criminal activity: the 'shine runners of the prohibition era. It attracts some of the most disreputable examples of humanity you can find.

Hey!! My family hails from the hills along the Ohio River just across from West Virginia. My great grandfather had a still  - until my grandfather moved him to Detroit. When I was young, my grandfather would tell me all about how to make whiskey and all that. They were great family stories. My grandfather tended to go "pick up a few" during prohibition by going to Canada through the St. Clair Straits. Oh yea... he was also a bookie for a while.

However, he wasn't disreputable. He was opportunistic and like so many people of that era, didn't follow a law they didn't understand. In fact, history in this part of the world shows that most people with a boat during those times tended to go "pick up a few" from across the lake and rivers.

The folks who were disreputable were the ones who thought they'd take it over. Most of the families around here though have in their family history, a rum runner or two...it was just the way things were back then on the lake here in MI.

juliet

I'm with you.. the still owners and runners were only criminals because the govt wasnt on the take. LOL

( and how in the fuck did they get associated with Nascar.. boy that jumped the shark in logic. )

My family owned many stills and whore houses while they were at it durring prohib. My Granddaddy opened up a trucking co. so he could run the hooch my grandmas family made. A lot of people who dont know any better will look down on it.. and esp on people like Capone who was a major distrib. of the hooch. Any one from Chicago who has family for Generations will tell you Capone was not that bad of a guy.. he fed the poor and homeless of the city.. when the city didnt give a shit.

but I guess you can blame those rednecks for all the crime too.

Gwyn

Not to distract too much from the topic... but if the bitch steps in front of the tv during a race, she deserves what she gets.  (I do hope people that know me, know that I am kidding, but just in case I am putting in this disclaimer IT WAS A JOKE).

While many can argue the value of Nascar as a sport, I don't think you could logically argue that it doesn't bring in the largest crowds every week.  The average crowd that attends a Nascar race, is larger than any 2 baseball games in the same night, or football game.  The fact is that there is a huge following, and the fans are loyal.

Those that follow the sport know of all of the off track things these drivers do... Victory junction being one, and the race for autism being another.  While the roots of the race game, may well be that of shine runners, it has evolved into so much more.  I might even point out to those nay sayers that enjoy a good rum and coke, to look at the history of your prefered drink.

The Intimidator was somebody that reached beyond the fans of Nascar, just as The Great One (Gretsky) was/is to hockey.  Just one last thing, alot of people don't realize how much technology in todays automobiles has come from the testing and development that goes on to keep Nascar advancing.

Just my opinions,
Thadius

(Does the phrase "Gotdamn Yankee Carpetbagger" ring any bells here?  I know it's what immediately came to my mind reading it all!)

Gwynvyd - originally Nascar was run along the beach in souped up cars that were done in the same Style of souping them up as the cars used by 'Shiners.  That's where souping up stock vehicals in that manner originated.  It's obviously grown a LONG way from those rather humble beginnings.  The tracks are better, the cars are faster and sleeker, the drivers much better trained.  That's where Bipo got the logic from - despite it being less than logical to think than it has remained that way when these days multimillion dollar contracts and prize monies are on the line.
