To me, these are the real credentials -- to see someone doing what they do and do it well.

And people with such credentials have no need to call on something else as a reason they deserve respect.

MusicalBoredom -> RE: Age + Experience = Respect??? No...I don't think so Vern. (8/13/2008 8:27:21 AM)

Ok I think I've read all of this now.

First regarding respect I tend to respect people based on some experience I have with them.  I also try to treat everyone I deal with respectfully.  Treating someone respectfully isn't the same as having some admiration for them.  If someone's interaction with me leads me to not want to deal with them respectfully I usually just don't deal with them at all.  As far as respect on this site goes, I don't think I have treated anyone disrespectfully and I don't recall ever being treated in a disrespectful manner.  Some of my discussions have gotten a little heated and I certainly don't always agree with what everyone says but that has never been a reason act in a manner that's belittling to someone.  Sometimes on a site like this it's also very easy to misunderstand or be misunderstood but most of the time we seem to be able to figure that out and fix whatever communication problem there is.  Now be respectful doesn't mean that I like everybody, because I don't.  I also know that not everybody wants to be my best buddy either.  I do click with some and not with others.  I think that's part of being human.  I don't think disagreement is disrespect or calls for disrespect.

In terms of the age and experience thing, well I think age and experience does matter.  It matters for what ever I or you have gained experience in.  I am very good at whipping the ends of ropes.  If anyone ever wants to know how to do that well I can show them.  I don't think that makes me the bondage master I think it just means I can whip ropes well.  I have learned many things from people in the scene because they had more experience in something than I had.  I ask questions when I have questions.  If I want to know about suspension I want to ask someone who has a lot of experience doing it.  I'm not looking at that person as the BDSM giant, I might not even like them as a person, but I can recognize where they have some knowledge that I wish to have also.  Experience doesn't mean "better" it means "has done it before" period.

So ....someone has experience, does that mean they automatically deserve respect?

No. That means they've been around longer then someone else.

Thankyou CruelDesires.
That was my thought too, but as you can see from my lovely vanilla cone I'm still trying to find my way around the quote thingy and the emoticons.
It was meant to be tongue in cheek......honest

Nope.  I'm saying exactly the opposite of that.  Whatever experience someone has in something means only that they have experience in that.  I might ask the most misserable person on earth how to tie a particular knot if they know how and I don't.  They might be able to show me how to do something that I don't know how to do.  That does not mean I respect them in other areas or that I even like them as a human being.  I will either tret them respectfully or not deal with them at all though.

I don't think experience mean "been around longer."  Age and experience aren't the same thing to me at all.  Someone might have more experience in something than I do and be half my age.  I also don't think experience means someone deserves respect in all things.  I had an engineering professor that I thought was a complete ass.  I didn't like him at all and would never even want to hear his views on the world.  He did teach me a lot about problem solving however.  I didn't respect him in general but I did respect what he actually knew.  It didn't make him some great person in my eyes only someone with some knowledge to share.

I will treat everyone with courtesy, until and unless they give me reason not to. RESPECT, however, is a different animal.
MB.. I do get what you're saying about respecting the KNOWLEDGE if not the person...

I can agree with that.  To me, treating someone respectfully means respecting that they are one of the creatures on this earth and deserve to be treated as such.  That they have good points and bad points.  That they have fears and issues.  I think in my mind that's where the synonym comes from.  It doesn't take much for me to be nice to someone.  It takes a great deal for me to actually like someone and want some kind of ongoing interaction.

GreedyTop -> RE: Age + Experience = Respect??? No...I don't think so Vern. (8/13/2008 9:13:50 AM)

Thankyou again GreedyTop, that is what I was tring to say lol..
I agree MusicalBoredom, it costs nothing to be nice, to be courteous,though I trhink respect is a whole different ball game.

P.S...where did they guy go who started this?

I agree GT.  I think it's funny how must of agree on things like this but general language subtleties sort of get us.  I think if we were all face to face and actually knew where each other come from when we say things, those subtle differences wouldn't even exist.  We would sort know where the person was coming from and what they meant based on what we knew about them.  You are probably 100% correct in your usage of the term "respect."  I think I usually call that type of respect however "admiration."  But I think we would be saying the same thing.  I think for me, the term "respect" does mean manes as it was the term that was used when I was growing up.  I can't tell you how many times I heard "Respect your elders" or "Make sure you respect your teacher."  I don't think I was being told to admire them, just treat them in a particular way.

**Edited to add a big squishy hug to GT**
**Edited again to point out that those are indeed lifesavers in my pocket**

GreedyTop -> RE: Age + Experience = Respect??? No...I don't think so Vern. (8/13/2008 9:18:39 AM)

yeah, that's always gotten me too.. if my elder is a fucktard, WHY should I respect them?

eta: lifesavers?  *sobs*

mistoferin -> RE: Age + Experience = Respect??? No...I don't think so Vern. (8/13/2008 9:24:23 AM)

Whenever a dominant starts down this "All submissives must respect me because I'm a DOM" road, it makes it really hard not to laugh out loud. I get this little visual of Cartman...."RESPECT MY A-THOR-I-TIE!!!!!"
