I believe that everyone in the US should serve a mininum of two years active duty both male and female.
We don't need the draft.
We had to use it in Vietnam when we had 2,000 soldiers per day getting killed in a ground war.
Do I believe in the war? no. I believe in the troops.

Absolutely.  But when Obama suggested that same idea, republicans accused him of supporting slavery.  These are big times.

This is my first post in a very, very long time, and how appropriate that it should be to say thank you to everyone here who served and serves as a member of the U.S. Armed Forces. Thank you for your service, and for keeping us safe and free.

It was just an off comment, where McCain agreed with a woman in the audiance in one of his Q&A's, but he said that he agreed with her that the US needs to bring the draft back. This, as far as I can tell, is the first time the candidate has said this.Out loud.(Not that it's too difficult to figure out what he'd have to do, in order to fight his war with Iran, and with Moscow, and continue the Iraq war "until we achieve victory" sometime in the next 100 years.)

Personally, I really don't care, I'm past draft age, and have been out of the running anyway, since I'm diabetic... but for those of you who are potential IED fodder... or have kids who are... how do you feel about this?

Just askin'...

Hey Chief.

I'm thinking you're being a little naive here.... One's interpretation of the ''old  rules'' do not apply when a neocon is at the helm. Diabetics, flat fleet, arthritis, age, religious persuasion, etc....Don't matter {unless you're a pseudo-blueblood} - the rules can be changed at any time, just as long as the ends justify the means.

I think what it comes down to....Is you just have to follow your own personal constitution..... And no matter what excuse they have/use for re-instituting the draft, you're just not going to be a part of it. Once person does that, they can truly be at peace with themselves.

I don`t think he knew what he was agreeing with, after her somewhat incoherent and lengthy statement/question.

She culminated with the draft comment, but I don`t thing he caught it when he agreed to all she said.

I won`t be surprised if his campaign does a correction.

If they don`t do a correction, then one can say McCain has endorsed a draft.

No one`s going to let this particular senior moment pass without some scrutiny. It`s a big`n.

Personally,I think we need a draft. After training, two years military service or, after training,4 years non-military service. There`s a ton of newly crippled vets who`ll need care for the next 50 to 70 years.

...Yes...I support the draft, a national "service"...something that teaches men how to behave like men.

I fail to see how the practice of killing people with an M16 suddenly makes a person anything except perhaps a better, more lethal killer.

I'm opposed to a National draft by the way. Mainly because I'd never be able to find nail polish to match desert camo...

Attempting to re-instate the draft would be political suicide.  <IMO>

I agree with the idea of mandatory 2 year service for everyone.  Just give them the choice of military or something like the Peace Corps.  Either way, a lot of these spoiled little brats would learn what it is to be part of a society and to contribute.  So many young people today have these fantastic ideas of how things operate that have no basis in reality.

And I believe they make a nice shade of nail polish the color of desert sands that would nicely match desert camo.  The only problem would be finding your fingertips when you're in uniform.

I guess this will mean that affluent middleclass white kids will be staying on at college until they are 45.

I wonder why it got snipped almost as soon as McCain started to speak... this isn't being taken out of context or anything, is it?

I'm not sure what "I agree with everything you said" can be made out-of-context.

Besides, I find most Mc Cain supporters adore his ability to address complex issues with 6 word answers or less.

At least get the quote right...

quote:

Woman asking question :"Senator McCain I truly hope you get the opportunity to chase Bin Laden right to the gates of hell and push him in as you stated on your forum. I do have a question though. Disabled veterans, especially in this state, have horrible conditions…. I think it is a sad state of affairs when we have illegal aliens having a Medicaid card that can access specialist top physicians, the best of medical and our vets can’t even get to a doctor. These are the people that we tied yellow ribbons for and Bush patted on the back. If we don’t reenact the draft I don’t think we will have anyone to chase Bin Laden to the gates of hell.”

McCain's repsonse: “Ma’am, let me say that I don’t disagree with anything you said and thank you and I am grateful for your support of all of our veterans.”

I would also point out that if you watch the video, you will notice he was straining to hear her.  He may not have even heard the draft comment in there.

I will also point out again that McCain has spoken about his feelings on the draft.
July 25th, 2008.... http://www.reuters.com/article/politicsNews/idUSN2438836820080625
McCain said: "I don't know what would make a draft happen unless we were in an all-out World War III."
"I do not believe the draft is even practicable or desirable," McCain said.

There may not be a choise, considering the present state of the army.

Where are we going to get troops to fight WWIII in Georgia?

NATO ain`t gonna help.

Hi Irish,

The spoiled rich ones will always have daddy's lawyers on retainer and enough cash in their trust funds to do whatever the hell they want anyways.

Reading some of the insane comments here is about as big an indictment of the progressive educational
system of the USA and how it has "dumbed down" otherwise bright people with potential.

To even suggest as a joke that McCain wants to redo Viet Nam!  Does this idiot think that McCain
spent five years at a "Four Seasons Spa"...?  Can't wait to redo the experience.

McCain want to "take you or your kids into the service to fight in Iraq for 100 years!  I can understand
that stupidity coming from Pelosi or Reid..but from someone who should not be an ideologue as they
are it is really stupid.  Obama knows that too....Most of our troops should be out of Iraq within two years
other than those left to work with the Iraqi armed forces.

makes me glad im not american....

Makes me glad YOU ARE NOT AN AMERICAN TOO!  We have enough of our own home
grown malcontents with the greatest country on the planet.

By the way guys.  All these people in Europe that "hate america".  Watch as the Russian bear comes
back to life and these same people that hate America soo much come running back to Uncle Sam.

Since the end of the cold war the slogan for these little people from little countries has been "shit on America'...
As far as I'm concerned you should all start learning Russian.  The bear is coming to get you.  After he freezes
you this winter with no petrol.   Shame on you all.  After what this country and his children have done..fighting
and dying in two world wars.  NEVER AGAIN.  NO DRAFT TO DEFEND EUROPE..EVER AGAIN!

Hiya V,

Some also seem to forget that a particular candidate has 2 sons in the military right now.

Your wasting your breath. No one cares what happened. It's just a really good excuse to bring up the draft and try to scare the young voters. I remember 8 yrs ago, when my nephew came home all upset because they told him at school if we vote in a republican, they will reinstate the draft. It's not a new tactic.

Oh I know it's not a new tactic.  I just think it's hilarious when the only person that has brought any kind of legislation about reinstating the draft in my recent memory is a Democrat.

Charles Rangel D-NY is the one who has tried to put this through congress at least twice in the past 8 years.

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/11/19/AR2006111900376_pf.html

He might be trying to make this happen while a republican president is in office, and hope that no one notices that it was introduced by a democrat.

A Democratic Senator is actually pushing it.

That's precious!

Good point, Thadius.  I was remarking more on what we locals refer to as "Poly-dollies" and "Poly-brats".
