tightropes -> Grammar and spelling? (8/23/2008 7:11:47 PM)

I suspect this question has been asked before so I apologize for posing it again (as I haven't seen it).

Do other submissives feel as I do that a Domme whose profile is replete with spelling errors and/or grammatical mistakes doesn't warrant my interest?  What amuses me most are profiles that contain mistakes but warn that poor writing will count against the respondent.  In this age of spell checkers and the like, is there any excuse?  For me, poor spelling or grammar detracts from my ability to fully respect, let alone submit, to the writer.

Do any others concur or do you think my attitude is nothing but a symptom of OCD or an attempt to top from the bottom and that attitude trumps appropriate writing anytime.

Thanks for your thoughts.

E2Sweet -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (8/23/2008 7:26:13 PM)

Well, spelling and grammar mistakes do tend to affect my level of interest in the writer, but I really only shy away if the profile is really bad.

Also, if the Domme does in fact state that spelling and grammar counts when contacting her, and her profile is a spelling and grammar mine field, then I'm even more put off, as I 'm not all that interested in someone that cannot or will not hold them selves to the same standard as a potential submissive. Those profiles make me shudder a bit...

I think the worst profile faux pas that really puts me off is gratuitous profanity. Dommes that write those "If you're not this or that then kindly just f**k off" type of messages in their profiles usually land in my hidden profiles list. I can understand frustration in using a site like this to find serious minded potential submissives, but that's just over the line. What ever happened to maintaining some level of dignity?...

DreamsOfSpider -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (8/23/2008 7:50:05 PM)

I have trouble with this, too.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (8/23/2008 8:05:15 PM)

Well you're allowed to be attracted or detracted to anything you like.   But remember that what's good for the goose is NOT good for the gander in a Ds situation.  I can suck at something and yet have no problems with a sub being great at it (hello, that's how they would HELP me).

For example, you use the word "domme."  I hate that word and anyone who uses it I would immediately put into my "not interested" pile.  Maybe it seems silly to you, but it's not to me and since I'm the one who gets to decide, then that's what happens.

BeIgnited -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (8/23/2008 9:02:10 PM)

I'm a self-proclaimed grammar nazi, but I recognize its impolite to correct people's grammar when I don't know them well (not to mention, I'm not always perfect myself)--I usually reserve this for family and close friends, who'll love me anyway and suffer through.

Mistakes in a profile, beyond typos, usually set off a little *tweak* in my brain, but that by itself is not enough for me to discount a person entirely. What bothers me far more is "netspeak"--u, ur for you and your, r for are, etc. It smacks of laziness and immaturity to me.

Interesting. I'm curious as to what term could be substituted that would not land someone in the 'not interested' pile?...  I ask because, honestly, the more I search here and learn, the more confused I seem to become...

Sorry for the mini hijack.

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (8/23/2008 9:11:30 PM)

I am a terrible typist. I admit to it. I do not hold typos agaisnt someone. TYPOS. Unintentional mistakes happen and I know I do not take the time to run every post and every addition to my journal or profile through spell check so I dont expect anyone else to. Well, OK I do expect someone who is going to demand perfectspeling and grammar to have it. IF you want it from others, you better have it. Do as I say not as I do doesnt cut it on here.

Intentional poor grammar, complete disregard for attempts at spelling and netspeak, however, are instant turn offs. Its one thing to be cute and spell cool kewl or something like that. But, to replace short words with letters shows me the ultimate in laziness. To abbreviate words that take 5 or 6 keystrokes or less but yet spell out your kinks in vivid detail is selfish and self centered.
My opinion, of course

greetings to the OP,

As a person who has been in the school system (be that compulsory education or college) for the majority of my life,  spelling and grammar mistakes very definitely disgust me.  I pay no attention to *anyone* that has spelling or grammar mistakes in their profiles, no matter what role they assign themselves or how interesting they sound.  There is always another few minutes to re-read your profile, get another to read your profile (as sometimes you won't pick up your own mistakes) or use a spellchecker (I hate those things).

well wishes,

BKSir -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (8/23/2008 9:23:58 PM)

I realize that this is the 'Ask a Sub/Slave' section, but, you hit on one of my biggest pet peeves here, and I can't help but rant.  I'm a Dom, it's my prerogative anyway. [;)]  (kidding)  It is not just you or other subs though, that hold issue with this, of that you can be certain.

I will be the first to admit that my grammar is not on par with what it once was.  It does bother me as well.  However, I usually do my best with grammar, and attempt to try to not sound like a mentally disabled version of Yoda.

When it comes to spelling, and as BeIgnited stated, netspeak, I tend to get more than a tad pissy.  Netspeak tells me one of a few things.  A:  You don't have enough respect for me to type out three or four letter words.  B:  You never bothered to learn how to spell three or four letter words.  C:  You are trying far too hard to be 'cool'.  D:  You don't have time to spell out the aforementioned three or four lette words, much less time to spend on anything meaningful.  E:  You're not willing to put a little bit of effort into the smallest of things, what makes me expect you to even attempt more important things?

In all of these cases, be they Dom, sub, or just Joe Smith on the street, they instantly lose my attention and interest in holding any further correspondence.

Of course, if it's just the occasional typo, they happen.  I've been on the internet long enough to recognize the difference between laziness, inability and simple mistakes.

Now, as far as them saying "Bad speeling and gramer when reply, is be ignord.", yeah...  I do have a big problem with this.  I do not hold my pet to a standard higher than I hold myself, and attempt to keep my hypocracy to a minimum.  I'm not going to ask him to be the next Maya Angelou or anyone like that, unless that is something that is obviously naturally inherrant in him, when I myself, in everyday, casual conversation have been caught using non-words such as 'funner' (good god I blushed like a mad man).

That being said, nobody is perfect.  But at the same time, everyone can, if they have the time to even be on this site, take the time to put a bit of effort toward writing their introduction.  After all, it IS an introduction, your first message and first impression, and when I read something along the lines of what was described, my first impression is, "Wow, this person is either lazy or stupid."  Perhaps I'm alone in thinking that this is most likely NOT the first impression anyone wants to give to people when that person is obviously attempting to attract them.

<EDIT:  Good lord, I spelled 'prerogative' wrong in the first paragraph...  *headdesk*>

Missokyst -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (8/23/2008 9:38:08 PM)

Many people suck at spelling, but somethings are way over the top.  My pet peeve is people who still say collard, or the infamous UR.

I'm one of those annoying people who pay attention to details-as a way to see if someone has focus.

DreamsOfSpider -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (8/23/2008 11:11:44 PM)

Whoa, I had no idea prerogative was spelled that way. Makes me wonder what else I'm spelling wrong...

Nothing wrong with collards, though. Very tasty greens. ;)

Dom or dominant work just fine.

I don't much care for "L33t-speak", and S/slashY/y S/sP/peak is just too hip for me, but, other than that, I tend to overlook minor errors in spelling. I used to be much more concerned with my spelling, but I have found that most readers are seeking the meaning of what I write, rather than the technical aspects of writing. Text-speak (ur, u, et cetera) is annoying, and I don't much care to waste my time trying to translate it into English. I feel that the writer is either too lazy to write  properly, a trendoid consuming unit trying to be cool, or uneducated.

I look for the concepts behind the words. I seek the intention of the writer. I wish to know what the writer thinks about a particular topic. Clear and concise prose is the best way, I think, to reach one's audience. A couple spelling errors are trivial, and unworthy of comment, normally.

I am occasionally bothered by syntactical errors, mis-matched tense (for example, "She's going to the store and bought herself the short end of a lollipop."), incorrect use of punctuation (and I'm not referring to the "Oxford Comma"), and mangling Foreign phrases, "per say" being the most egregious example, IMO. I do not object to the use of acronyms, either, as long as they are commonly understood, and not used to refer to some esoteric phrase not in general use. Acronyms are useful even though the underlying words are not known (think "laser"; almost everybody has some concept of what a laser is, even if they don't know the words or the physics).

I have known a number of people whose spelling is atrocious, yet they hold patents and have been published in highly-regarded scientific and technical journals. Israel Kutasov (Izzy) comes to mind. He couldn't spell or write clear English sentences worth a damn, and yet he gave chess exhibitions wherein he would play several people simultaneously, and was once the director of the Permafrost Institute in Irkutsk, Siberia.

Anyway, judging people by how they spell is shallow and idiotic.

Hime -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (8/23/2008 11:28:54 PM)

I have far from perfect grammar and typos often occur in my writing so, it would be rather hypocritical of me to hold such errors against someone else.  And *imo* it would be extremely self-limiting to allow grammatical errors to stand in the way of getting to know someone from the start.  Personally, I would judge a persons character based on what I knew of them - not whether or not they knew the difference between You're and Your.

pinnipedster -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (8/23/2008 11:32:27 PM)

I don't mind few typos or spelling errors, and I'm not a stickler for absolutely correct grammar, but I do definitely judge people on the basis of how well they can communicate.  I know this isn't entirely fair: I had a friend in my high school/college days whose speech could seem so incoherent that I was once asked seriously by someone we both worked with if he was retarted, when actually he was one of the brightest and definitely most creative people I've ever known.  But if someone can't form a sentence that I can make sense out of, I am definitely put off.

But the one that tops my list is people -- even people who otherwise seem fairly well grounded -- who still refer to being, or wanting to find, "a Dominate woman."  It's DOMINANT.  A dominant is one who dominates.  It just makes me cringe....

It is, perhaps? So "it's" instead of "its"?
Nobody's perfect, so I usually sort for the message, and run the grammar/spelling check later.

LuckyAlbatross -> RE: Grammar and spelling? (8/23/2008 11:38:42 PM)

There's an amusing cyber "law" which states that any time you attempt to correct or criticize someone's mistakes, especially with spelling or grammar, you will inevitably make that same mistake yourself in the process.

greetings to the OP,

As a person who has been in the school system (be that compulsory education or college) for the majority of my life,
Oh, gosh. Person is third-person singular, is it not? The pronoun should agree with the noun, so rather than "my", you should use "her".

I've picked on you quite enough. Except it should read "There are always another few minutes..."

LOL! No kidding! I figure my average rate of mistakes is at least one per online post, so I try to cut some slack. [:D]
There are some that make me cringe, but I hope I make those once in a while just to remind everyone that I'm human too... it seems to be working!
