I would say it is improper not to let someone you love support you in your time of need. I would think that withdrawing from her because you don't feel like letting her hold you when you need that to be destructive to the relationship.

Which is not the same as saying you have to go to the next play party. You may feel like going and taking time out from your grief by being with friends. You may also feel like staying home and away from crowds. Both of those responses are fine as long as they are authentic. What is wrong is not allowing yourself to be human for fear you will be thought less of.
