As Governor of Alaska she regularly negotiates with Russia, Japan, and Canada over international fishing rights and abuses.  She regularly negotiates with Canada regarding oil and gas leasing and drilling.

She has negotiated with Canada regarding a 40 Billion dollar natural gas pipeline and has been instrumental in fast tracking legislation in both Alaska and Canada to allow this to happen.

So the mantra of 'no international experience' is a fallacy.

Is this really relevant for the context of our involvement in 2 wars? (So far.)

But why not Rice?! It's awful: what's wrong with Rice? Is she too competent? Is it because she has international savvy? Is it because of the rumours that she's gay? What the fuck?

Palin is so wreckless a choice, it's bordering on criminally insane. McCain was introducing her today in Ohio and had to read her name and state from a piece of paper he had in front of him. A potential vice-president he doesn't even know!

You mean you would have been behind a choice of Condie?  Or would the chants about McSame have drown out every other issue?

Is it wise and good judgment to choose the Vice Presidential candidate and possible President after 1 or 2 meetings?

The number of times she met personally with McCain is mis-leading.  You can be sure that his team of lawyers and campaign managers have been extremely busy digging through every aspect of her background for several months now, just like they did with everyone else they considered.

What experience does Obama have again?  Has he negotiated a single deal or issue with foreign leaders?

subtee -> RE: President Palin? (8/29/2008 8:11:19 PM)

So your answer to my question is yes? Would this be your method as well, if you were McCain?

I'm not sure how much or for how long she was vetted by McCain's folks. Neither her friends nor neighbors nor even her father knew she would be name the VP candidate today ahead of time. They all heard about it on the news.

Isn't that about the extent of a particular Senator from Illinois' experience on foreign policy?

As to why... well here is one opinion from Feb 2007.
http://palinforvp.blogspot.com/2007/02/why-sarah-palin.html

You keep on asking about Obama: a tactic that has been criticised muchly on these boards, when it came to invoking the idea of Bush in relation to this election [;)] .

I repeat: why not Condoleeza Rice? I don't ask for quotes and a plethora of links from partisan websites. I'm asking for opinions. You still haven't answered my question: I sense your nervousness. I understand it, because it's a scary time for the Republican party: big, big, big gamble.

Leatherist -> RE: President Palin? (8/29/2008 8:13:14 PM)

It's set up an interesting catch 22 for the dnc.

Republicans must be laughing everywhere.

Is this the only answer? "Well nonnie nonnie do do, neither does Obama!" I asked a question.

You don't answer very many of my questions, you know.

[Edit to add: I guess Kittin and I are thinking rather alike tonight]

I answered that question see post 202.  Condie has too much baggage and is to engrained in the "Bush" machine.  If you can honestly say you wouldn't be protesting her on those grounds, I would be surprised.

As to why I am comparing her to Obama, hmmm since he is the TOP of the ticket of the other major party.  Seems like a logical comparison.

Just sayin,
Thadius

Of course they didn't know about it ahead of time.  If they had, it would have been all over the news yesterday before she even boarded a plane to meet McCain for the announcement.

subtee -> RE: President Palin? (8/29/2008 8:19:07 PM)

I agree with Thadius. She's too closely aligned with Bush (and would be much maligned for it).  They needed someone far removed. Alaska is about as far away from Washington DC as you can get and still be in the U.S.

Things only work that way on The West Wing... [;)]

In this election, McCain and Obama are both being handled by teams, and whether they did a good job vetting her or not, somewhere along the line, the 'choice' was made by committee.

See my response to Kitten.

You are trying to knock this woman down because she has no experience with war, yet the TOP of the ticket on the other side has arguably less experience dealing with foreign countries.  So how is it not relevant?  She has negotiated with foreign governments and gotten things done.  How is that not relevant?

Why do you think the Obama camp called off the attack dogs about her experience?  They got a chance to do a bit of research, and realized it was a losing battle.

Why is this woman not qualified to be the Vice President?

Alumbrado -> RE: President Palin? (8/29/2008 8:22:21 PM)

Or at least as qualified as some of the past 'winners'...[:D]

So if you were to align your future and your (lifetime?) goal and ambition to a person who could potentially make or break it for you, and with whom you would need to work for at least the next 4 years, you wouldn't need to really know that person? You would leave it to committee?

I've been asking questions, Thadius. I've provided citations to the questions I've answered. I have concerns about this woman and, by extension, about McCain for having chose her and the way in which it appears he chose her.

And runner ups.  I pointed out earlier, and I guess some missed it, that in '56 much of the same was said and true about JFK.  He finished second after all of the shifting allowed after the second ballot, however he did win the vote before the shifting.

Just an FYI.

No, not quite.  I would give the vetting committee a list of names and have them do their jobs.  When the time came, I would choose the most qualified candidate from among those who passed the vetting process.  I am confident that this is exactly how McCain chose Palin as his running mate.

I haven't seen much of knocking her down. But even you must admit that one must be made of solid stuff to cope with the public scrutiny that comes with the jobs she (and all the others) are covetting: a little shaking shouldn't do Palin any harm at all. I think all the questions asked are very relevant, and your answer that Rice is 'too close to Bush' illuminating: by your own admission then, an election has nothing to do with competence or experience, or political savvy. It's about political loyalties and affiliation. Thanks for confirming that.
