Mike,

Why are folks so quick to jump to the conclussion that this was an attempt to garner all of the women that supported Hillary?

Because it makes the repubs look bad and if they can get some of HC's group to believe it, they might not lose as many votes. They don't have to actually prove anything, they just keep throwing the bs at the crowd and hoping something sticks.

I'm finding they're doing that perfectly well, and without any outside help [;)] .

Please tell us all how a Vice President is going to overturn Roe vs Wade?

For that matter, how a President could accomplish the same?

The president nominates the Supreme Court justices, and usually in accordance with his (or hers, in this case) ideological beliefs.

Soooo... Palin being against the right to choose... see? Easy.

Yes, I know that.

The point is that Congress would never confirm three extremely conservative judges (or one for that matter).

Your optimism is touching, but I doubt many women think it's a good idea to gamble their rights like that [;)] .

Hey,If Thad is happy, why begrudge him his choice?

What's funny is its really not the people, its the platforms and party affiliations driving most everyone's opinion. What's funny about the Republicans and their faithful is that their party, with its anti-populist and anti-progressive platform, makes every election about "character." Then they act indignant if the tactic is used against them. The best example is how they tried to smear John Kerry as a rich, effeminate, Frenchman out of touch with the average American. They really tagged him hard for being married to an heiress.

Now that some Democrats have turned this strategy around on John McCain, who can't recall how many homes he owns, the Republican response is "why are you attacking McCain for attaining the American dream?"

Paul Krugman advocated that what the Democrats need to do is engage in Republican style character assassination of their opponents while proffering a better platform to boot. Hillary would have been up for this challenge, but Obama doesn't like to ride on the low road express. McCain doesn't really like to either, but we already know there's little he can do about it.

Thomas,Scalia,Alito and Roberts...need I go on?

bipolarber -> RE: President Palin? (8/30/2008 8:21:25 AM)

And an ultra-conservative Supreme Court will be making decisions that will warp the United States for the next 50 years... decisions that will reduce privacy, restrict pornography, sexual rights (for both gay and straight... if you haven't noticed, they HAVE tried to make BDSM illeagal in the past) ,deciding if the US will continue to become more of a torture state, the upholding (or not) of hebeas corpus...

Sorry, but you just don't take chances with that kind of evil.

Kittin, you really should study how the Supreme Court operates, and the principles on which they make their decisions.

Overturning Roe v. Wade would take an activist Supreme Court, one willing to set aside precedent and create new precedent.  It would take a Supreme Court willing to set aside the principle of stare decisis.

A Supreme Court with a conservative legal philosophy will be more skeptical of overturning Roe v. Wade because of the pre-eminence of precedent.  Arbitrarily and specifically seeking to reverse that particular decision would violate that principle of jurisprudence:
quote:

"It is . . . a fundamental jurisprudential policy that prior applicable precedent usually must be followed even though the case, if considered anew, might be decided differently by the current justices. This policy . . . 'is based on the assumption that certainty, predictability and stability in the law are the major objectives of the legal system; i.e., that parties should be able to regulate their conduct and enter into relationships with reasonable assurance of the governing rules of law.'" (Moradi-Shalal v. Fireman's Fund Ins. Companies (1988) 46 Cal.3d 287, 296.)

Roe v. Wade is binding precedent; reversing the precedent would require a persuasive argument that the decision is so malformed that setting aside stare decisis is the only feasible remedy before the court (if you want to debate why Roe v Wade was a bad case decided badly, we'll need to take that to another thread).  That is a very steep hill for any lawyer to climb.

The notion that the Supreme Court will erase Roe v. Wade at the behest of the White  House is fatuous and foolish.

In other words, much more is required than the desire of religious conservatives to overturn Roe v Wade.

Good point. Also, why was it the Conservatives on the Highest and Most Supreme Bench who opposed it the last time it came up

Well, let's say while taking the oath of office, McCain gets a hardon, the lack of blood pulsing to his brain causes him to dispatch the mortal coil. Before or after his hand actually palsies on the old Guttenberg first printing.

Is she good to go?

Six, look at Harry Truman, all he did as V.P. was drink whiskey and play cards with senators.
FDR only spoke with him once while asking him to take V.P.
FDR didn't even let him in on "The Manhatten project."
Truman didn't have any foreign policy "experience."
Gov. Palin has had dealings with the Russians and Canadians, that's more "experience" than Obama has had.
So if your talking "experience" she has more "experience" than Obama! lol
I think Truman did a great job considering the whirlwind he had to walk into.
And what is "foreign policy experience" anyway?
It's simply sitting down and talking with other buearocrats of foreign countries.
It'd be refreshing if our people knew how to do that without cutting a check everytime they do.
