I think pro subs are useful in helping newbie Dommes/Doms find thier feet so to speak in a safe, controlled environment.

beltainefaerie -> RE: pro submissives (9/11/2008 6:58:47 AM)

It seems pro-subs provide a service.  I would imagine that most people who use them are either beginning or still getting comfortable with this aspect of their sexuality.
I don't really get why it bugs some people.  My favorite character in literature is basically a pro-sub, though without most limits and in a society where courteseans are revered. (Phedre in the Kushiel series)

The concept itself doesn't bug me in the slightest ... what does bug me is people starting "discussion" threads in order to promote their business.

I find that a bit wearing, TBH.  And patronising – it’s like “do you really think people are that stupid?” – but then of course many are.

rook42 -> RE: pro submissives (9/11/2008 3:01:51 PM)

*shrug* I dont think it's that effective an advertising tool, so I have no worries. Besides... This thread gave birth to the chubby fister and his whore mustard, so it obviously fulfills a socially beneficial function. We salute you, mustard man; someone's gotta keep the condiments happy.

Really, we're all whores in some way or another. Whoring out bondage/pain/<insert whatever it is they do> is not literally whoring, any more than any job is. Or any more than a massage(sans happy ending(s)) is prostitution.

I don't see how either party would be selling out their principles if they both mutually agreed on the contract. Could you get a massage by hitting up some random college gals? Oh yes... and how. But there would be an exponentially higher rate of drama than going to a masseuse, and it wouldn't be as good. I assume the payment for prosubs is not for the service, it's for the quality, and it's because you're finished with the professional afterwards.

It's like agreeing not to bring drama into a relationship with someone. If parties can take utility from it, why the hassle? Should drama really be a core value, or a perceived necessity for meaningful interaction? I really don't think so. I've kept some drama free friends for years(Not as many as I would like...).

I wouldn't currently be comfortable paying out cash for play any more than I would be comfortable accepting it(the occasional offers are an ego boost). But I really havent heard any logical argument to link whores and prosubs. Haircuts feel good too, and can be enjoyable for both parties... But I dont go around calling my barber a whore.

Speak for yourself.  By which I mean, what utter cobblers.

Whether it's an efficient advertising medium is hardly the point either.

IvyMorgan -> RE: pro submissives (9/11/2008 3:11:16 PM)

Hairdressers... *shudders*  hard limit.  I have laissez faire hair and I like it that way.

I think

There are whores, and there are pro-subs.

Some whores are also pro-subs.

Some pro-subs are also whores.

Not all whores/pro-subs are pro-subs/whores.

There are times when I mourn the death of the slide-rule.

This is one of those times [:D]

IvyMorgan -> RE: pro submissives (9/11/2008 3:17:07 PM)

Weird cos my slide rule just calculated log values, and not how much I should be charging for activities, and whether it was a one off charge or by the hour.

Paulnz -> RE: pro submissives (9/11/2008 3:29:52 PM)

Personally, I doubt I'd ever use a pro-sub. Peculiar reason though, and this has to do with flipping it the other way around. I knew a pro-switch, a good one in fact, and she said she stopped pro-subbing and just went to pro-domming, as she found it unrewarding having to stop and show the supposed Dom the ropes ( excuse the pun ). So knowing that I'd always be thinking I'm being assessed and that the sub wasn't really getting much out of it, I'd stay away.

I am. I've been quite the whore, just not with err... whoring. Or play, for that matter- it's been play for play's sake. Give me a man's resume, and i'll likely show where he's been a whore as well. I hardly consider a spanking session to be a sacred act requiring purity of intent and focus, any more than taking someone's money to get them a coffee. Sex is more grey; culturally, we attach a lot of significance to it(More than it warrants, in my eyes).

My views exactly, Ivy. Leather/perversion make it to the venn diagram, as well. Yes, there's a rather nice overlap... But there are a LOT of people that are outliers, in both directions.

Which is totally different from the fatuous statement "we're all whores".

Thanks for correcting yourself BTW, it's appreciated.

True, but you may also find a pimp. The world is made up of pimps and whores.
