Status: offline 		I agree with you that "homophobia" is a vague and imprecise term.  For one thing, the word they want has to mean "fear of homosexuals," but "homophobia" literally means "fear of what is the same" (and thus doesn't even make much sense).

However, there's a big difference between homophobia and simply disliking homosexual sex.  And there is such a thing as homophobia in this world, even if we don't like the particular word that has been chosen to denote it.  Homophobia is an irrational disgust of homosexuals--the kind of hatred that drives people to violence against homosexuals.  If you dislike homosexual sex but don't hate homosexuals for it, you're not a homophobe.

I will share a little bit, here ...
 
"Homo" is Greek. It means "same" as in "Homophone" (things that sound the same).
 
"Phobia" is also from the Greek;
  1. A persistent, abnormal, and irrational fear of a specific thing or situation that compels one to avoid it, despite the awareness and reassurance that it is not dangerous.

This "word" is actually a horribly constructed "word" made up of a prefix and a suffix. Nothing in the middle. No "meat" in the sandwich. So, we have, technically: "an abnormal or irrational fear of things that are the same". Anyone who truly suffered from this condition wouldn't necessarily be bothered by two men (or two ladies), but, if you put them in a room with 100 pairs of identical twins, they'd need 30 years of therapy! LOL!

Anyway, forgetting the linguistic quagmire, why the need to use "phobia"? Why does it have to be a "fear"? Are we not simply allowed to disLIKE things, anymore? I don't like deer meat. I don't suffer from "Venisinphobia".

Unfortunately, I think either the chosing of the word's construct was either VERY poorly thought out or, it was very carefully thought out in order to villify people who don't conform to a certain way of thinking.

As someone said, just before me: I don't LIKE certain behaviors. I don't hate the people. I don't fear the behavior. I dislike it. I don't like cross-stitching, either.

Status: offline 		Xenophobia isn’t really the fear of foreign cultures either, although that would be the literal meaning.
Who's to say when a culture is alien to them and thus foreign. People use words in flexible ways and looking for literal meanings is irrelevant the majority of the time to the discussion.

Of all my friends whom I know for a fact wouldn't f**k me if I begged, it was gay and lesbian people.  I never had a moment's anxiety about it.  And I don't know any gay or lesbian person whose number one fantasy is to 'seduce' someone who's straight.  They all have pretty strong signals that they're gay or lesbian not only to attract others, but to keep straight people from hitting on them 'by accident'.  Especially members of the oppositie sex.

Heaven forbid, many are even famous actors/actresses!

end note - from what I am reading from many of these posts, many are taking the inappropriate actions of a smaller section and applying it to the entire gay community, which is completely false and inaccurate. This is akin to saying all men are wife abusers when it is only a small portion of the male population that physically abuse women. Maybe it's time we (figuratively speaking) stop assuming that the negative aspects apply to the the whole? We all know this is simply not true.

I think Woman are just as likely to form gangs and beat down people as anyone else.  We are just as capable of vioence and hatred, and though I don't think it's something to crow about, anyone who doesn't move to the other side of the street as a gang of teen aged girls moves towards them is as foolish as anyone who doesn't avoid gangs of teen aged boys.
 
I'd say the big difference between Men and Women when it comes to violence is that, given that we so often target Men, who generally have superior physical strength, Women are more vicious, more creative, without the boundaries Men are inclucated with on sporting fields; if it will maim or even kill, we'll do it without a moment's hesitation.  Women in violence do not have a 'squork' factor (Gee, that's so gross, I could never do that'); we only think of what's at hand...what will do the job.  Victims of male violence can usually point to an event -- 'it began at about 8pm when I turned a corner..'; victims of female violence usually have to point to a starting place -- 'I sure wish now I had not beat her sister that first time....'
