The story was all over the Internet within minutes of airing. By Sunday morning it was seen by millions more as they opened their e-mail. By Sunday Night it was being touted as proof of the sexism put upon Sarah Palin and by Monday it was major news story all over the country.

So really me bringing it up on a niche BDSM forum or Sanity commenting on it hardly contributed to the "propaganda".

A MAJOR news story huh?

Is that why half the posts on this thread were questioning you what it was about when you posted it?

The MAJOR news story is we're about to take it up the ass courtesy of the Republican free-market theories on the economy.

Don't imagine you much want to talk about that though, HUH?

I do.  However, those wishing to play the blame game only want to look at one party.  They also want to ignore which legislation is responsible for the current mess.  They further wish to ignore that nothing has been done in the last 2 years to rectify the problem, and actually some of the mandates and positions held by the now majority have contributed to it.

Then again many folks do not want to talk about where much of the responsibility lies in the foreclosure "crisis".  Folks that took out mortgages that they couldn't afford, that didn't contact their lenders to let them know they were having problems, folks that weren't responsible enough to pay their bills on time.  Now I am not saying that there aren't some folks that are in that situation because they lost a job or some other legit loss of income.  I am pointing at those that were approved with no income and no job, in accordance with the Dem position that requiring verification of those was improperly targeting minorities.

Of course folks don't want to discuss those things in a realistic manner, because they would have to admit that some of the blame actually falls on the shoulders of those they are supporting.

Know what I mean?

bipolarber -> RE: The Skit (9/23/2008 10:30:40 AM)

I really don't see where this matters. Thanks to "Falwell vs. Flynt" legal precedent is established on the side of comedians parodying people in the public eye. That includes the Palins, and the NYT.

In case you forgot, Larry Flynt ran a parody ad that suggested that Jerry Fallwell's "first time" was a drunken tryst with his mother in an outhouse.  The Supreme Court of the United States upheld Flynt's right (and by extension all other comics making political or social commentary) to make a joke about politicians, religious leaders, and celebrities of all stripe. Nothing says it has to be a GOOD joke, which this clearly wasn't, but they have the right to do so all the same.

And you, Fat, have the right to complain and bitch about it, and try to have people lose their jobs... all for a sketch that was, really, IN SUPPORT of your position, that the media has been treating Sarah Palin unfairly. (But you went off on your rant instead of trying to see what the intent was.)

Yup. It was a crappily written sketch on SNL.... no big surprise there. SNL has become an institution on NBC... and because of that, they have been doing weaker and weaker material since the early glory days of the NRFPTP, when they did jokes like "Autumn Fizz... the Carbonated Douche" and the infamous bits written by Michael O'Donahughe. Frankly, it's because of republican, right wing cranks (people with a TV set and an email account, who are just waiting to be offended) who feel they have the right to be the final arpiters of national taste, who have destroyed any kind of real, "politically edgy" entertainment on TV.

HEY!!!!

Where's my pint?

Now I'm going to have to lock myself in the bathroom and have another good cry.

Sorry, I drank it, thought you'd gone. Please don't cry, it makes you look like an offended conservative person. Fancy a bottle of cheap French red instead :-) ? [sm=buddies.gif]

This is hardly the first time SNL has parodied "white trailer trash" Americans. Look at their continued repetition of the "Apalachian ER" sketch...

The sad thing is, republicans tend to take jokes in the same manner as was portrayed in the movie "V For Vendetta", where the commedian is beaten, black bagged, drug from his home, and later shot. You wonder why republicans seem to take the brunt of humor lately? It's because they've been running roughshod over us all for the last six out of eight years, and have been barely slowed by the last two when the dems regained some measure of power. They fucked up everythign they touched, and that makes them the perfect target for satire and parody.

Considering that most of them deserve a firing squad or jail time, I think a few jokes on network TV is letting them off lightly, don't you agree?

I beg your pardon.  I have a great sense of humor.  However, in my view..there are a few things off limits... violence against women, pedophilia and incest.

Period.  end of story.  I've never strayed from that.  I never will.

So you can kindly step back for a moment and quit attempting to put all Republicans in the same sweep of your generalization brush.

Yes, I know.

I keep hearing about how the Democratic Congress is somehow responsible for not solving every problem the Republicans created in the last 14 years.

The Democrats have been in control in Congress for less than two years.  Republicans held Congress for almost the entire 12 years before that and the White House for nearly the last eight.

Yet, somehow, the new logic on the right suggests they have failed by not solving everything from the Iraq quagmire to the mortgage crisis in 20 months.

No worries I think Obama just set his own trap.  He keeps talking about how Phil Gramm wrote the law that is responsible for this mess, which is accurate, I just can't wait until people realize the poison pill that introduces into the debate.  It will be a beautiful moment, as somebody tries to seperate congressional responsibility from the executive responsibility, and then try to apply that same responsibility back to the executive for the positives.  A better plot could not be written.

SilverMark -> RE: The Skit (9/24/2008 3:03:42 AM)

I take it that you are referring to the fact that Clinton signed the bill? If that is the reference than it was also passed by congress that Obama was yet a member of and if memory serves me, and it way too early for to think, that clearly wasn't congress then controlled by the other party? The votes were overwhelmingly Republican with a few Democratic votes? I don't think Obama will find it a surprise and I have no idea how McCain voted on it although for Gramm I am sure he fell in line.
I would have to research this but for now it is the best my tired mind can produce. If my answer is correct to do I get free gym membership or a Starbucks coupon or something?...instead of just saying....I am just guessing....

For some posters on here, that is like asking them to stop breathing.

kittinSol -> RE: The Skit (9/24/2008 6:00:42 AM)

Surely, you mean the posters who call those they disagree with (and I quote) vile, degenerate, revolting slime [8|] ?

TheHeretic -> RE: The Skit (9/24/2008 6:45:58 AM)

Now, Kitten, if you are going to take me out of context, isn't it a bit self defeating to link to the original statement?

kittinSol -> RE: The Skit (9/24/2008 7:16:03 AM)

I disagree. The context was present, and the insults you made fit perfectly within it. Why deny it now if you believe it? It's your karma, Heretic.

TheHeretic -> RE: The Skit (9/24/2008 7:27:58 AM)

Who's denying, Kitten?  Look at what the Palin nomination has brought out, right from the opening shot by Daily Kos (the site can't seem to find the article I was looking for, but you can find a discussion of it here...
http://www.collarchat.com/m_2106164/mpage_1/tm.htm .  More if you Google, I'm sure.)

Free speech rocks, Kitten.  I don't need to paint those I disagree with.  They paint themselves, and are so far out of touch, they don't even get how they are perceived.

Have a great day, love.  I gotta work.

It was indeed Clinton that signed the bill into law, some argue it is the reason that the economy grew so quickly as it allowed for various banks to play in each others back yards (getting those 20% yields instead of the stuffy 7% returns on bonds and the safe plays).  Just one of the many deregulations that took place during that administration.  Now folks want to give credit to Clinton for the growth, but when it comes to discussing the negatives folks want to blame congress.

Fast forward a couple of years, Fanny and Freddy both got busted for cooking the books to get bonuses for their executives, congress attempted to fix the issue, and the Dems filibustered, forcing the bills to be put on the back burner.  The Dems continued to push the making of bad loans to those that had no prayer of paying them off, because "asking for verification of jobs or income unduely targeted minorities".  They also didn't want to go after these institutions because it is where Dems go to retire.  Doubt what I am saying?  What was Franklin Raines job before Fannie Mae CEO?  How about Jim Johnson?  Also ask yourself why if you look at all donations by these companies since '89 are the top two receipiants Dodd and Obama (yeah even with his short time in the Senate he has surpassed all the others except for Dodd).  Now ask yourself why Raines and Johnson are integral parts of the Obama campaign.  2 guys that cooked the books and were fired for their business practices, got their golden parachutes and now working for and with the Obama campaign.  Remember that a certain party decided that instead of going after any kind of punitive action, all they wanted from these companies was a promise that they would make loans more available to low income families.

Just a few things to think about.  If one wants to blame congress for the negatives of the past, why does the current congress get off scott free? [;)]

One more quickie.  Both Obama and Biden voted for the "bridge to nowhere", twice.  One time was even a direct vote on it, as a Senator put forward an amendment to not fund that project and move the money towards bridges that were in disrepair.  They both voted against that idea.

P.S. There will be those that will say this is a biased write up, I will simply point them to the numerous times I have talked about the out of control bullshit that the Republicans are responsible for as well.

slvemike4u -> RE: The Skit (9/24/2008 11:41:00 AM)

Heretic,i went back and read the Daily Kos thread ,found nothing in my view that justifies your "vile, degenerate, revolting slime"label...but it is nice to know you can throw around labels with the best of them, all while decrying the unfair treatment of Sarah from the Klondike.

Unfortunately, it's a backlash against Republicans since Reagan's time making liberal a dirty word and trying to paint every Democrat and every Democratic policy as liberal.

What goes around comes around.

You can't be a party to the tactic then whine that it's unfair when it's used against you.

Um,.......... yeah,............... it was a generic statement aimed at Republicans in general, not a specific attack on you.
