There's that, a Democratic Senate candidate has his fingers in this mess. Which skit did he help write though?

I thought that even the one about McCain was a bit much. I remember when SNL was about comedy instead of being one long tasteless political commercial for the Democrats...

And I wonder how much it helped or hurt the Democrats.

While I agree the subject could have and should have been changed.  I am much more concerned with the concept that Al Franken was responsible for writing one of the political skits.  It becomes a completely different beast when somebody with something to gain begins using that medium to attempt to score political points for their party.

Just sayin,
Thadius

Thadius -> RE: The Skit (9/22/2008 9:43:01 PM)

It is being said that he wrote the first one.

Edited to add:  They have been pretty good about taking shots at both parties regularly, remember the primary debates they lampooned?

kittinSol -> RE: The Skit (9/23/2008 5:08:10 AM)

You defended a prominent politician for making offensive public remarks about a young woman - in the circumstances, your indignation at a cheap crappy joke made by an entertainer is a little much to take. So which will it be, defense of freedom of speech at all cost, including remarks you may find tasteless and offensive, or (how vile and slimy and left-leaning of you to want to protect the innocent), a more moderated public arena (very much like this one) where not everything and anything can be said in public?

SilverMark -> RE: The Skit (9/23/2008 5:10:00 AM)

I'm John McCain and I approve this message....
Thought it was hilarious....also find the constant Obama/ Hillary running gag funny.
All seriousness aside....it WAS FUNNY!...

It was a controversial "joke" to begin with, wouldn't you say?

You seem awfully upset about this thread. Why is that exactly... are there certain topics of discussion that you think should be strictly forbidden, such as this obvious Liberal media bias?

If NBC fires any SNL staff over this I will be th efirst to call them cowards for caving in to whiny pieces of shit who manufactured a controversy out of a bad joke.

That you are seeking to stir stuff up about this just confirms my opinion of you.

Media?   [sm=rofl.gif]

It's a FUCKING COMEDY show.

Some people need to get a life.

Had I had said news media you might have a point.

I addressed your deep and profoundly heartfelt concerns earlier in this thread kitten, when I wrote this:

quote:

ORIGINAL: Sanity

This is about more than just Sarah Palin - her entire family may have been watching that "skit" live, and as hoodie pointed out there are certain others who shouldn't be the targets of such offensive material as that.

There was a recent thread about John McCain making a joke ten years ago about how ugly Chelsea Clinton is, and how the cause of her ugliness was due to Janet Reno being her father. Here's a comment made by a certain perennial Left-leaning member of these boards:

quote:

Exactly, so it follows that McCain is a fucking mean wanker - how much of an arsehole do you have to be? How would you feel if your daughter was talked about like that? McCain was an asswipe, there's no two ways about it. Perhaps he offered an apology, which would be more than appropriate - I do not know, but at least admit that he was a cunt, and move on - let's hope he's grown up a little.

Contrast that with the way this conversation is going...

For the record I said in that thread that it was years ago, McCain apologized, and that it was a sick joke but that I liked sick jokes. To that I'll add this - McCain's joke was told in a private setting, not on live nationally broadcast television. Had SNL aired a skit trashing a young Chelsea Clinton in the heat of an election I would have taken offense because we as a nation should be better than that.

This is a sick attempt by the cast of SNL to try to help swing the election by denigrating all the people of Alaska as well as a fine American family who may have been watching on live TV. Imagine them throwing all of Illinois under the bus to try to trash the Obamas... with some similar sick racist humor thrown in. You would have what we're discussing here, only with the shoe on the other foot.

There are two distinct standards on display here for all to see, and it's clear at least to me that certain people will say or do anything for the sake of expediency, and that to me is tragic. We as a nation are better than this, at least I hope we are.

There is no conversing with intellectual dishonesty - you think McCain's disgusting public joke is alright. Yet you get all whiny over a (albeit offensive) comment on a comedy show that nobody would have heard of were it not for people like you and FatDad. You contributed hugely to the propagation of the SNL skit - that's your responsibility. Which one do you choose, freedom of speech, or moderation?

I know .

I'm sorry.

I just didn't realize how delicate and sensitive most Republicans are.

Sanity -> RE: The Skit (9/23/2008 5:59:06 AM)

McCain's joke was in a private setting as I said, and you know something... it's really funny to hear you throwing the words  "intellectual honesty" around... because the SNL skit wouldn't have been funny had it been referencing Michelle Obama fing someone in her family other than Obama, but I'd llike to see your reaction to something like that because that "certain perennial Left-leaning member of these boards" I mentioned above was you!

Sanity -> RE: The Skit (9/23/2008 6:00:18 AM)

Care to expand on that? I don't get your point.

Unless you're trying to suggest that the propaganda that's slipped into your movies, comedy and daily television is harmless compared to the propaganda that is spoon fed to you while you watch the "news".

And then I still don't get it.

bipolarber -> RE: The Skit (9/23/2008 6:13:04 AM)

This is hardly the first time SNL has parodied "white trailer trash" Americans. Look at their continued repetition of the "Apalachian ER" sketch...

The sad thing is, republicans tend to take jokes in the same manner as was portrayed in the movie "V For Vendetta", where the commedian is beaten, black bagged, drug from his home, and later shot. You wonder why republicans seem to take the brunt of humor lately? It's because they've been running roughshod over us all for the last six out of eight years, and have been barely slowed by the last two when the dems regained some measure of power. They fucked up everythign they touched, and that makes them the perfect target for satire and parody.

Considering that most of them deserve a firing squad or jail time, I think a few jokes on network TV is letting them off lightly, don't you agree?

lilmissdefiant -> RE: The Skit (9/23/2008 6:34:51 AM)

Can some one please message me and tell me what was in the skit? I haven't heard of it due to the fact I'm in Australia

No, no, ................I can't right now.

I just heard someone say something really, really mean about Obama.

I need to be alone and have a good cry.

I'm just way too upset.

You presume something that is wrong :-) .

kittinSol -> RE: The Skit (9/23/2008 6:56:17 AM)

Funny how the perennial right-wing posters on the boards are discovering their PC side all of a sudden: I think it's an admirable effort on their part to understand the other side's point of view, even if it's a little misguided [8D] .

Thanks for the 'fair use' clip, Slaveboy.  Yeah.  I'd say that one blew up in their faces.  I'll give SNL this;  considering what has been determined as fair game in the politics of personal destruction applied to Governor Palin and her family, such an extreme was where they had to go to make their point.

Sanity -> RE: The Skit (9/23/2008 7:21:30 AM)

You practically went apoplectic over a comparatively mild ten-year-old joke!

kittinSol -> RE: The Skit (9/23/2008 7:24:48 AM)

Aaah, but I don't agree with just spouting off any kind of shit in public: it seems like you don't mind, as long as it's the kind of shit you like. When you don't like the shit in question, all hell breaks loose.

So what shall it be, freedom of speech no matter what (including making nasty jokes about the Clinton's and Palin's brood) or freedom of speech with some limitations (third time I ask). Or do you have something else to propose?
