Nah, you shouldn't generalize about republicans. There are several distinct types... (sort of like Dante, and his multiple circles of hell) 1) There's the average folks at home republican. These are the folks who ACTUALLY BELIEVE that stuff about the GOP being about smaller government, and more individual control over our own lives. (These are the folks who have "drunk the GOP kool-aide.") Generally, they go to church a lot, drink in the privacy of their own home, fuck with the lights off, and hate gays because they've never met any, and have only seen the "scare" films in church. 2) Then you have you middle management republicans. These are the folks who hold local office, and generally try to keep the peace, and stay out of everyone's business. At some point, they get pulled into a State or National campaign, and then they begin to learn how to lie and cheat. 3) Upper level GOP hardliners: There are the long term party members who really don't give a crap about the ideology. They're in it to screw the little guy, and suck up as much graft as possible from lobbyists. They actively hate gays, work to overturn Roe v Wade (while they take their daughters on a "fact finding" mission to France for a "little operation" when nessacary) i.e. they are hypocrits.
