I addressed your deep and profoundly heartfelt concerns earlier in this thread kitten, when I wrote this: quote:
ORIGINAL: Sanity This is about more than just Sarah Palin - her entire family may have been watching that "skit" live, and as hoodie pointed out there are certain others who shouldn't be the targets of such offensive material as that. There was a recent thread about John McCain making a joke ten years ago about how ugly Chelsea Clinton is, and how the cause of her ugliness was due to Janet Reno being her father. Here's a comment made by a certain perennial Left-leaning member of these boards: quote:
Exactly, so it follows that McCain is a fucking mean wanker - how much of an arsehole do you have to be? How would you feel if your daughter was talked about like that? McCain was an asswipe, there's no two ways about it. Perhaps he offered an apology, which would be more than appropriate - I do not know, but at least admit that he was a cunt, and move on - let's hope he's grown up a little. Contrast that with the way this conversation is going... For the record I said in that thread that it was years ago, McCain apologized, and that it was a sick joke but that I liked sick jokes. To that I'll add this - McCain's joke was told in a private setting, not on live nationally broadcast television. Had SNL aired a skit trashing a young Chelsea Clinton in the heat of an election I would have taken offense because we as a nation should be better than that. This is a sick attempt by the cast of SNL to try to help swing the election by denigrating all the people of Alaska as well as a fine American family who may have been watching on live TV. Imagine them throwing all of Illinois under the bus to try to trash the Obamas... with some similar sick racist humor thrown in. You would have what we're discussing here, only with the shoe on the other foot. There are two distinct standards on display here for all to see, and it's clear at least to me that certain people will say or do anything for the sake of expediency, and that to me is tragic. We as a nation are better than this, at least I hope we are. quote:
ORIGINAL: kittinSol You defended a prominent politician for making offensive public remarks about a young woman - in the circumstances, your indignation at a cheap crappy joke made by an entertainer is a little much to take. So which will it be, defense of freedom of speech at all cost, including remarks you may find tasteless and offensive, or (how vile and slimy and left-leaning of you to want to protect the innocent), a more moderated public arena (very much like this one) where not everything and anything can be said in public?
