the whole issue is a none issue without evidence of god's existence.

The issues then become: how do you define God, and what do you consider evidence?

seeksfemslave -> RE: Any atheists here? (10/2/2008 5:14:17 AM)

"What is evidence" is a very good question.

Many humans have got carried away with their intellectual success and have come to believe that only those things amenable to "common sense" reason can possibly be true.
In fact the deeper modern science probes the more it has become clear that this belief is untrue.
I think modern science is in a bit of a mess but that IMO is because it has been led astray by speculative maths.

You wouldn't believe a fairy called Tinkerbell lives up your arse without proof so why do you believe in god without proof.

.

faith.

“When it comes to BULLSHIT...BIG-TIME, MAJOR LEAGUE BULLSHIT... you have to stand IN AWE, IN AWE of the all time champion of false promises and exaggerated claims, religion. Religion easily has the greatest bullshit story ever told. Think about it, religion has actually convinced people that there's an INVISIBLE MAN...LIVING IN THE SKY...who watches every thing you do, every minute of every day. And the invisible man has a list of ten special things that he does not want you to do. And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish where he will send to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry for ever and ever 'til the end of time...but he loves you.” George Carlin

Carlin's definition of God is very much a chimera.

Let's list his various gods. Observe that Carlin's gods are anthropomorphical, i.e. they are some of the incarnate gods, as opposed to the Divine.

1.there's an INVISIBLE MAN...
That may refer to any incarnate god, as well as to ordinary men. This statement thus is extremely vague as to the identity of Carlin's chimeric god.

2.LIVING IN THE SKY...
Yep, that is what gods and angels do. Plenty of people living in the sky, so here Carlin is anything but specific as well.

3.who watches every thing you do, every minute of every day.
Now this is very specific, as it is what Santaclaus by any of his names does.

4.the invisible man has a list of ten special things that he does not want you to do.
This is also somewhat specific: it refers to the god that rescued Moses and his gang. Unfortunately, as usual, Carlin does not name this god. (And neither will I, but I do know his name - in fact I know two of his contemporary avatars.)
Note also that the list is rather short. The goddess Ma'at had a list of requirement that was a fair bit longer.

5.And if you do any of these ten things, he has a special place full of fire and smoke and burning and torture and anguish where he will send to live and suffer and burn and choke and scream and cry for ever and ever 'til the end of time...
I dunno to what god this refers, as I have no reference. It is of course some christian thing, but it is very reminiscent of scenes in the ancient Greek mythology: the tortures of Tantalus and Sisyphus.

6.but he loves you
I do not know where Carlin got that from either. Seems also to be christian, so possibly from some line in the New Testament?

nah, we've successfully diverted holly from a happy holiday! her LO might miss it though, poor little thing [:o]

sirsholly -> RE: Any atheists here? (10/2/2008 7:18:46 AM)

this will be the first Christmas he is really aware of what is going on. Last year we scared the poop out of him by plopping him on Santa's lap for a picture. Btw...ol' Santa gets a wee bit pissy when a screaming kid rips his beard off.

Dnomyar -> RE: Any atheists here? (10/2/2008 7:19:53 AM)

anthropomorphic.  Thank you for my new word for the day. Who says you can't lear anything on these forums. If we are to believe that we were created in God's image then all we have to do is to look into a mirror. See there is a God.  Wait a minute Im a man she is a woman . He is black I am white. So much for the image theory.

Incorrect. It was only Adam that was the image of one of the gods. Everybody else was not.

Not incorrect. We are all desendants of Adam.
