I'm guessing that Palin will be judged the winner.  She more than held her own.  She's coming across folksy, natural, confident, informed.  She's really hitting those memorable phrases and quotable quotes.  She said "maverick" a lot.  She's rambling some and has used some words I've never heard before, but unlike the recent interviews she is making her point.  She put a lot of cutesieness in her jabs to keep her likeable so that there wasn't a bitchy edge.  I think she's nailed it.

Biden isn't coming across as well.  His tone was sometimes rather defensive.  He got wonky a time or three.  I like that but most folks don't.  When he got on McCain he pounded more than he should have.  He's more well spoken, certainly, but I don't think that he has connected.

This was big.  Palin was mostly looking at the camera and talking to us.  Biden was mostly looking at Gwen and talking to her.

Did you watch it?  What did you think?

Did it change your mind or give you something to think about?

I would say that Palin acquitted herself very well. I was a bit alarmed at the very beginning when she veered into Soccer Mom territory, but she recovered from that. I liked the points she made about finger-pointing and looking back at the past instead of looking forward.

Not that there isn't value in introspection, but there comes a time to turn to the future, shed past baggage and to quote Monty Python...GET ON WITH IT!

The bar was so low, I wouldn't be surprised.  A lot of it was seemingly by rote for her.

She was kind of nasty in a high school "mean girl" kind of way.

And the winking!  Gag

The people who like her will like her, the people who don't like her won't.  It was a push.

All in all i think it went better than the train wreck i was expecting..lol.  It's going to be interesting to see how the media and analyst think.  Her folksy speaking manner seemed to disappear at times when she wasn't thinking about it or it didn't seem important to her to use it, then it would pop back out when she thought it would remind people of her background and was kind of hokey at times.   i thought her statement of their ticket didn't want to look back rather scarier, since i'm a firm believer that "those who refuse to learn from past mistakes are destined to repeat them" (paraphrasing there..too tired to google it right now..lol.)

Now come the shows to tell us what we heard..doncha just love those..lol.

I think Palin did very well.  She looked comfortable, and she made her points clearly.  Biden seemed stiff to me, and he sounded like he was running against George Bush.  I wasn't impressed with his delivery.

Gwen Ifill did exactly what I expected her to do.  She was a bad choice for a moderator.  It irritated me when she asked Palin to "defend" McCain's health care plan, but didn't ask Biden the same question.

I wasn't impressed by Sarah's policies or points of views.
But then, she did not really give many.
I see her representing more of the same crap that is driving America
into the toilet.

If America drinks the same koolaid that they were drinking when they
elected Bush/Cheney and elect McCain/Palin, then we will deserve what we get.
More of the same!

All four feet left the stage in good shape.  No drool on Biden's (unless the spinners find a bit of plagiarism), no bullets in Palin's.  Lively and entertaining for me, the wife headed back into her book pretty quick.

With Biden, I felt like I was hearing a viable Vice-Presidential candidate and one who could step into the highest office should the unthinkable happen. He came across as smart and human. With Palin, I did not see her as a viable VP candidate nor do I take her seriously. She came across as fake, not folksy to me. Dog gone it anyhow. I had absolutely no expectation of Palin and that's exactly what she delivered.

Substance goes to Biden.
Intellect goes to Biden.
Humanity goes to Biden.
Bake Sale Goddess/Beauty Queen Pagent contestant - Palin, hands down.

I'm not voting for Obama or for McCain...........but
I thought Palin gave the most direct answers. She stayed on topic.
Biden got choaked up.......generally I would have been moved but I think that I'm jaded when it comes to politicains anymore.

Palin did not give the answer I wanted to hear on the war on Iraq but she did on energy.

So I would have to say it went Palin tonight.

But neither convinced me to vote for their running mate.

Biden was dry and boring and Palin was just an empty headed phony. Most of her answers were typical rhetoric and she did a lot of swerving and avoiding, whereas Biden answered questions more directly and thoroughly. I did notice that Biden mostly looked at Gwen and it was disconcerting that he wasn't looking at the camera. I also noticed that a couple of time he threw a big grin at Palin like he had a schoolboy crush on her. He should have used that smile for the camera, it's nice. Instead he looked kind of squinty and bland. As long as he's been in politics I'm surprised he doesn't have more polish and shine about him, but he did come off pretty down to earth and honest (at least he seemed that way). Palin had more polish, but came off like she didn't have an original thought in her head and wasn't especially bright.

Over all I would say Palin C and Biden B-

Interesting debate: I was fascinated. Palin started off well: I agree that she has good camera technique because of her training as a televised sports anchor. She had populist lines and she delivered them well. Biden caught up though... this is when the dynamic changed radically in Biden's favour, with his in-depth knowledge of foreign policy and his demolishing of McCain's record. I thought he showed extreme courtesy and came across as warm and humane.

Palin didn't meet the criteria I would think would inspire confidence in her as a potential president. "I'm not answering that question because I want to talk about something else." just because it wasn't on her cue cards was a bad moment for her. In the end, this debate won't change many people's minds. The republican candidate managed not to sink; but she never started swimming. She just didn't drag her party further into the ground.

Excellent entertainment.

Considering where the bar was set(see 3 previous tv interviews)McCain won't be jumping out a window tonight.Biden won hands down, but Palin might have avoided more YouTube infamy and in this case I guess that's a victory.

Hi Mike. What I want to know is this: will she be going back in the closet now that she performed okay on the night?

My overall impression, is that I wish we could have the option of selecting a Biden/Palin ticket.

Biden is an Obama I can trust ... Palin is a McCain I can believe.

<fast reply>

I thought Palin exceeded expectations, but I still have a hard time seeing her as presidential. Not sure if that's the (faux?) folksiness, internalized sexism, or what.

Palin seriously lost my respect on the topic of Biden's vote to authorize GWB to use force against Iraq. Biden explained why he voted the way that he did, but Palin either didn't hear it or chose to ignore it. She then launched perhaps her most nauseating folsky attack: "I'm not a Washington insider, so I don't understand the way you talk, how you were against it before you were for it, etc." If she really didn't understand Biden's answer, then she's in over her head. If she did but chose to play dumb anyway, she's intellectually dishonest--and, I think, condescending to the American people.

I was sorry that Biden never called Palin on the contradiction between her claiming in one breath that we needed better regulation of Wall Street and in another that we need to shrink the government and let the private sector run things.

Eta: On climate change, Palin seemed unprepared and much more at sea than in her other answers. That, of course, made me wonder if we were getting a glimpse into her actual intellectual heft rather than her ability to deliver canned answers.
