She believes the Bible is literally true.  Is there really any more to be said?

Sanity -> RE: We HATES Her (10/4/2008 9:17:06 AM)

Do you hate everyone who is religious, LAM?

Of course there is more to be said, LaM.  That's the beauty of Palin on the ticket.  What pew did Obama sit in for 20ish years?

But she doesnt LaM - she violates so many of the "rules for women" given in the Bible she either hasnt read it (rightfully too, since she's a woman she shouldnt be permitted to), doesnt believe it (and its all a PR stunt), is adopting a "pick and mix" attitude or is deliberately violating that which she holds to be literally true in terms of proper female decorum

Lordandmaster -> RE: We HATES Her (10/4/2008 9:23:04 AM)

Absolutely not.  But someone who believes the Bible is LITERALLY true belongs on a different planet.  There's no possibility of rational discussion with someone like that.

You are obviously trying to hold Governor Palin to a different standard than Senator Obama. If you were to be fair about it, Senator Obama is violating your literal interpretation of the bible in at least as many ways as you claim that the Governor is.

Sanity -> RE: We HATES Her (10/4/2008 9:26:58 AM)

So, you're argiuing that Senator Obama isn't a "real" Christian, despite his claims.

And therefore, because he's only doing it for show, as a political stunt to win votes, that makes him the better candidate.

That about sum it up?

The pew that did not believe the bible was literally true... and unless you believe the same it is hard for me to believe that you would support Palin.

Give me someone who is friends with Jeremiah Wright over someone who went to a church where speaking in tongues and casting out witches is a cornerstone of their faith. I suppose a snake handler would be ok with you as long as they were a republican

Being a Christian doesn't require taking the Bible literally.

Lordandmaster -> RE: We HATES Her (10/4/2008 9:35:04 AM)

No, what about sums it up is that even as you attack people for questioning religion, you don't seem to know very much about Christianity.  The overwhelming majority of Christians don't read the Bible literally.  The Pope doesn't read the Bible literally.  Only wackos like Sarah Palin think the Bible is supposed to be read literally.

Lots of Christians do not believe that the entire Bible is literally true... some of them believe that Genesis, for example, is a collection of myths handed down through oral tradition until recorded into Hebrew. This does not negate their feeling that Jesus was a divinely inspired individual and perhaps sent here from God. Now I suppose you could research the many denominations of Christians that hold differing beliefs on the construction of the Bible, if it was not too cumbersome for you. I suppose many Christians are one twue way... like Palin

The reasons I don't like her are simple:

1) She doesn't have a fucking clue. She didn't even know the definition of the job, according to the Constitution, the other night at the debate. Biden had to remind her of Article One. (You'd think that someone running for an office would at least look up it's definition before spouting off.)

2) Her religious views, and my idea of personal liberty clash. She's fundie Christian, and wants to shut down women's choices over their own reproductive systems. She wants to dumb down the American school system by teaching creationisim. She wants to ban books. She's anti-wiccan.

3) From all reports, she abuses power, and outright lies, on a regular basis. Troopergate, the bridge to nowhere fiasco, the lie about her supporting Alaska's divestment from Darfur, how the troops are at "pre-surge levels" (we actually have about 17,000 more than when the surge started) the deliberate lies about McCain's tax and health care plans... etc., etc..

4) She just plain gives me the creeps. I grew up in the middle of Illinois, around people like her. Let me tell you, anyone who waves the "I'm from a small town" flag and thinks it's a positive, is either deluded, or just plain doesn't know what the fuck they are talking about. Small towns, my friends, are where folks drink themselves into stupors, attend church to support their own narrow world views by surrounding themselves with like minded people, and get their political opinions from right wing radio and TV. Take a look at the mid-winter suicide rate in small towns sometime, compared to the rest of the nation. Small towns are vest pocket universes of boredom, desperation, and ignorrance.

Believe it or not, the world is a much, much bigger, and more complex place than even a lifetime in Wassilla, Alaska would have you believe.

Preach it, Brother .. Preach it !  (you're spot on!)

Your opinion.

It's my opinion that people who believe "liberalism" to be LITERALLY true belong on a different planet. There's no possibility of rational discussion with someone like that.

The definition of "Christian" is one who believes that Jesus was indeed sent here from God.

There are, of course, religious organizations which ape, or draw upon the Christian tradition ... but do not meet the definition of "Christian", even if they quote both the bible and Jesus.

But what is happening here, DC, unless someone has video of Sarah reciting the Falwell Creed, is that the positions and dogma of her church are being directly assigned to her.  I've been dragged along to churches where what you say above is very much a requirement.  Shouldn't the same standards be applied to where Barack sent his ___s to Sunday School?  Perhaps biblical literalism wasn't a requirement, but shouldn't he be labeled as having race-based priorities?  If what her pastor said on Sunday can be relied on for her thinking, where does that put Reverend Wright in his head?

Do we hear about Palin leaving the Assembly of God for a less, let's say 'intense,' non-denominational?

I agree that Palin shouldn't be assumed to be a literalist unless she's said that she is. Has she?

I grew up in a small town in the middle of Illinois too.  And while I can't dispute much of what you say, I think that's true of people anywhere who never raise their heads and see that there's a world beyond their little corner of it.  Ignorance, desperation, boredom, and narrow mindedness are not limited to small town America.  I can't help but think of those generous, wise and open minded people from my childhood,  residents of small town America, who opened my mind to the world beyond rural Illinois.

However, I do agree that Sarah Palin is self righteous, ignorant, and completely lacking in intellectual curiosity.  Of course, so is GW Bush and he went to Andover and Yale.  Maybe it's not so much about where.

CallaFirestormBW -> RE: We HATES Her (10/4/2008 10:00:19 AM)

Personally, she's not worth my hate... but I do feel that she is an inappropriate individual to put up as a candidate for vice president because she has proven herself completely incapable of seeing the broad range of people within her constituency. She has made it clear that, if she is elected, she intends to manipulate the laws of the United States so that -whether or not- individuals thus existing within this country share her beliefs, we will all be forced to abide by the structure of those beliefs or will be criminalized when we attempt to reinforce our ownership of our own spiritual, physical, and social directions. Under Palin, no American (including American women) will own hir own body or mind, and that is just plain wrong.
