I wasn`t sure if any republicans would stand up to this new ,hateful,racist and dangerous line coming from the McCain campaign.

This is now affecting(negatively)republicans in others races.And they are telling McCain(the party`s leader) to quit it b/c it`s hurting them.

I predicted a year ago that this would happen.And it`s not b/c I`m gifted.I just know that republicans are dirty campaigners and shameless.

The BBC reported from Tennessee earlier this week.

I could hardly believe my ears when the one guy said to the effect of "I'm from Illinois too, but I'm not going to vote for Obama because he's Muslim. He might not be like the Muslims that attacked on 9/11, but he's still a Muslim".

Its really, really shocking to have heard this, recorded just last week - when the "Muslim slur" was dropped how long ago now? Mud sticks it seems.

LaT - this is why I would introduce weighted voting; because the stupid by far outnumber the few, and if the stupid remember to vote under the current system we dont get decent government, we get government by the stupid and for the stupid.

One of the more interesting interviews to come out in the last few days was with an indipendant writer who was following the McCain campaign as reasearch for her upcoming book on the political process in America, in the 21st century. She made a comment that, (paraphrasing) "It used to be that you'd walk around a McCain event and you'd bump into a "fringe" person. (Someone who was spouting the "Obama's a Muslim" line, or that he he was secretly a terrorist, or who would be an outright racist.) only maybe one in one hundred... Now, since the personal attacks have started, the fringers have taken over the crowd. Now you are lucky to find one rational republican in a hundred. The demographic has reversed."

She then went on to say that the subject of her book is going to have to change. Obviously, this is NOT a standard election. Instead, she's writing it as a history of how the Republican party is crashing and burning... the possible title: "Doomsday for Republicans," or "GOP: R.I.P." (tenative titles only)

The upshot is, it was her opinion that, thanks to the Bush administrations lies , the wars, the economy, and now that the republican party has branded itself the party of racial hate, the republicans have not only lost this election, but possible as many as the next three. The younger generation is taking over the voting booths in the next eight years. The generation that has been brought up to be far more color blind than the ones preceeding it.

The sounds you are hearing from the GOP campain this year, are the terrified bleatings of racist dinosaurs, being sucked down into a tar pit of irrevelance.

Good riddance to them.

It gets even worse. Yesterday, at a "town hall" meeting here in the Twin Cities, some blowsy, doddering old biddy from Shakopee, Minnesota said to McCain, "I do not trust Obama... I have read about him, and he's a... a... he's an Arab." To his credit, McCain shook his head in disgust and took the microphone away from her at that point, saying, "No, no," while the audience behind him reacted with distaste, but I can only cut him a limited amount of slack. He's the unprincipled asshole who set the tone for this campaign, and he's got to take responsibility for the direction it's gone.

it floors me that we the country and beyond, are playing games, which rome burns or the titanic sinks.

we just dont have time for that.

I am nausues over it.

ALL the bail out packages poof. That is OUR toil that "we" have not toiled yet.

If more people knew the small amount of stock they own- is now worth a few pennies- there would be a national strike.

But- even with this- people are not hungry enough yet- and wont pull the cord on the tv set.

why arent grand juries being put in?
why arent citizen overview panels over seeing the public money?

It's very alarming. These people are not even referring to Obama as human, he's "that Obama". It's racial hatred barely concealed. Their only reason for opposing him is because he's African American and has a funny name. They honestly have no idea what his position is on anything, nor do they care. The scary part is that they represent a very large segment of the American population. It's time we break the grip of this kind of secular, narrow thinking, that has given us such a terrible world wide reputation, but I fear it could come with a terrible price if this hate mongering is allowed (encouraged) to flourish.

I know on another thread you made a jest about "witchcraft", but there are many people here who would likely honestly believe that and feel very threatened and frightened by it. Think about it, if they are afraid of Harry Potter, imagine how they twist and turn our current circumstances in their brains to justify an Obama presidency?

Yep - what makes it funny is that its just the sort of slur that might well come up. What makes it scary is that so many would take it to heart and then this would take on a whole new style of divisiveness; the sort where people end up killing each other to prove their points

I was saying this on another message board the other day, wondering if anyone could remember ever in our lifetimes seeing another Democratic candidate who was the object of such seething, vitriolic hatred. I certainly don't. To me, the only thing that explains it is racism. It's one of the things that makes me sick sometimes about living in this country. America would be a much better place to live if it weren't infested with so many fucking Americans.

Well, you have to remember they're mentally ill. All religious fundamentalists are. Once you look at it that way, it makes it much easier to understand where they're coming from.

Actually, it already has gotten to that point. A couple of months ago, a republican nutcase walked into Hillary Clinton's Little Rock HQ, and shot and killed the chairman of her local campaign, Bill Gwatney. Upon investigation, they found him to be a typical "fringe" type. His apartment was a small arsenal of semi-legal assault weapons, (he was an NRA member) with books by Limbaugh, O'Riley, The Turner Diaries, and his TV tuned to FOX. Along with the usual stuff, he had clippings about Gwatney push pinned to his walls.

This election has already tasted it's first blood.

I don't think either candidate has run a "clean" campaign, but McCains has bothered me quite a bit in the past week. I am not understanding this messianic fervor people have for Obama however...he has not ever really done anything...spent alot of time in Illionis senate prepping and running for US senator, then the past 2 years of his Senate term running for President. To me sounds like he has a huge ego and thinks experience does not matter. And community organizer does not count as experience, hell I could start a club of people who like to throw rocks in water and call it a community organizer. But of course these are just my opinions.

As much as this is belated and as much as McCain bears some responsibility for the level of hatred that his campaign has engendered towards Obama, I honestly give the man a lot of credit for this. He went on to describe Obama as a decent man and one who people should not be afraid of to see as President. That had to be the hardest of hard sells to the crowd he was in front of.

My thinking is, his campaign has deliberately gone to playing hardball as they have fallen behind, and he's been willing to accept some ugliness to try to win (after all, it was done to him in 2000... it's probably very difficult to take the high road after that- recall that he was "Swift-boated" by his own party, before that term even existed). He's not dumb- he can see how ignorant some of his supporters are. I think he just reached the limits of what he could personally tolerate, and the good and decent man he's been for most of his political life shone through. It may also have been a tacit admission of defeat, in a way- there's no sense in crawling through the gutter if it's not going to get you anywhere.

In terms of the hate welling up among the republican masses, they are acting like ignorant, racist, spoiled brats. They believe the wildest delusions are facts, they can't conceal their disgust that anyone non-white might be elected President, and they basically have taken on the mentality of a lynch mob. I have to wonder how much the right-wing "media" (ie, talk radio) has contributed to this- it's an endless fountain of bile and lies, and that message (unfortunately) seems to have taken deep root.

As an American citizen, frankly I'm embarrassed and disgusted by it- it's the sort of thing you want to apologize to friends overseas for.
