There was a political slot the other night over here (England), featuring Plaid Cymru (the Welsh nationalists). Plaid Cymru used the slot to tell of the need for a prison in north Wales, as there isnt one and currently its a minimum 4 hour roundtrip for families and solicitors to see prisoners and people on remand in England. They have a site in mind - a good site that was a former factory - it would provide employment and an economic boost to the area too, if the prison were located there. Thus far - I was in total agreement. Then, the leader of Plaid Cymru had the incredible gall to think that the money for this prison should come from the British taxpayer as a whole (or in other words, from England); incredible, notwithstanding that Prisons come from central taxation, in that the English taxpayer already covers the majority of the cost of the Welsh budget - the same budget under which the Welsh get free medical prescriptions whilst we in England pay for ours (and theirs). I estimate that if the Welsh paid their prescription charges themselves, as we do here, this would virtually pay for the prison that's so badly needed by freeing up money in the Welsh budget - but of course Plaid Cymru wouldnt countenance that as it would make them unpopular with their electorate. Independence for Wales - now! Maybe then the Welsh can play politics with their own money, not ours! E
