You're contradicting yourself. If Wales was so wonderful, a good proportion of those 50+ million people would be heading down the road. They don't even need to get on a boat. But they don't. They stay in England, and the reason is simple. England lives in the lap of luxury, while Wales has been totally fucked over and offers very little to the vast majority.

Look at it another way. NZ's North Island has a similar population ( and culture Rugby, Sheep etc ), yet it doesn't have the same population to draw on nearby. The nearest is the South Island ( 1 million ) or Australia a 3 hour flight or several days by ship ( 20 million ). If Wales was just a little bit more like the North Island the population of Wales would be over 10 million easy. The reason it's so de-populated is because it's on the receiving end the whole time. They're the last in line at the soup kitchen.

I have been reading this thread for a while and quitely bitting my tongue but really enough is enough. You are nothing but a total idiot. How dare you, someone who visits once or twice, tell me who was born and raised in Wales, has family living in Wales, regularly visits the beautiful country, that Wales is "fucked over". Wales is no different to the rest of the UK. There are wealthy parts and not so wealthy parts. Crossing the border into Wales you would see no difference in the shopping centres or new housing estates being built.

So your view of Wales is idiotic. But then what is the point of New Zealand just full of fucking sheep!

Thank Thatcher, Major and Blair for getting things running again.

Major is widely regarded as one of the worst prime ministers the British have ever had.  Really, one would have to be completely demented to believe your remarks.

I'm amazed you know all this because according to your own admission you haven't spent any or very little time in Britain.

No, I said I hadn't lived there. I've been visiting Britain regularly for quite a long time and thus get shapshots of where they're at on each visit. There is change and they have progressed slowly. Though saying their roads have always been good just isn't true. At one stage they had the worst roads of any OECD country I visited. And their vehicle fleet was also bad ( still is from some angles, like the absence of air conditioning in so many cars ). Thank Thatcher, Major and Blair for getting things running again.

I've got nothing against people critizing Britain, that's theur right but at least get a modicum of your facts right. I'm not sure what you are talking about when you say Britain's vehicle fleet was so bad but I can give you a reason for the run down of much of Britain, namely Thatcher!!!!!! She privatised the public buses which in a stroke aged the nation's bus fleet, new cowboy bus companies sold many of their new buses (many to India) and bought many old buses (many from India). Privatisation of the railways destroyed British train manufacturing so now train companies who chose to run their trains into the ground have to buy new trains to maintain safety standards, buy trains from abroad, mainly Italy. Because of the privatisation of public transport under Thatcher and its drastic deterioration, many people who used public transport had to buy cars to get to work and if they couldn't afford a new or newish car, they had to buy an old one.

Thatcher destroyed and neglected a lot of perfectly good infrastructure through her ideological stupidity. Major was pathetic and carried on the same old way, as did Blair, who gained power without the fuck knowing what to do with it and idiots voted him in three times. In the north of England I know, you still can't trust the buses or trains to get you anywhere so not even that godlike figure Blair, could get something as simple as the buses running on time.

....first off, i've been keeping a note of all your names and putting them in the llfyr mawr.

.........second off, Wales is far from fucked. There are pockets of extreme poverty and lack of investment. Some of them are historical, some due to the collapse of industries such as coal mining, steel making and fisheries. However, despite being adjacent to one of the most efficient culture exporters in world history we have retained our language and a good many of our unique customs.  The Eisteddford is an astonishing socio-cultural phenomenon. In recent years we have got a Welsh Assmebly and it's actually been pretty good.
Plaid Cymru have always had a bunch of hot heads on the books who get into the press due to being mouthy and assertive. The vast majority of us ignore them. Why bother with all the hassle of independence when we're getting what we want anyway? We teach the language in our schools, we have the assembly and we're part of the EU. We're also recognised as an indigenous people by the UN. We'e not fucked, we're iawn.

Oh, and New Zealanders are also called sheep shaggers, but by the Aussies.

It's got nothing to do with which part of the UK it is.

Actually I think that is critical. It is all about which part of the UK. The North it could be argued has been similarly fucked over, but not to the same extent or for as long. But there is also a North/South divide that is stark in contrast, though not as stark as that with Wales. I've never been to Scotland so can't comment, but I'm told I'd notice the same thing as I have with Wales.

I find your post rather peculiar. It is hard not to notice the difference between Wales and England ( though Shropshire looks marginal it has to be said ). Saying it is exactly like the rest of the UK is ridiculous. I've already pointed out how de-populated it is, no-one lives there and those that do are living in a shithole. The landscape has been raped. It has literally been fucked over and anyone with any sense has long since had to leave.

Independence could turn it around. What they could start by doing is changing the tax structure to attract people from other parts of the World. Given that it is on the doorstep of the World's wealthiest market, it would only take 10 years to take off. The reason that doesn't happen is obvious, they're not allowed to. Wales is kept back. Nice place to visit for scenery, wouldn't want to live there, and no-one does.

So, the English are the very spawn of hell
The Americans are indolent idiots
And the Welsh are morons?

"How To Win Friends & Influence People" - its likely in your public library (unless libraries have been "improved" (privatised) in NZ.

Well done for taking a tongue in cheek thread and turning it into a shooting war too. I shall bid you adieu now, making use of a most wonderful device to delete your xenophobic rambles from view.

Stop talking such utter crap. Are you actually of this world??? When was the last time you were in Wales and how long for?

I have family who love living in Wales. My parents are moving back to Wales because they love it so much.  I suggest you actually take some time to see what it is really like living in Wales and speak to the people who actually live there very happily. You have shown just what a complete "twp" you are.

I do not see the point of a free Wales, nor the point of this argument. If Wales is an independent nation, then why does the Prince of Wales become the King of England? Stating that England has subjugated Wales is like saying that America has subjugated Maine. The whole island is smaller than Texas and should one government. Ireland, on the other hand is a completely separate land mass and should be independent. Free Ireland!

Gothgirl - the earliest history is confused. The traditional view is that the English arrived here as mercenaries hired by the British (generally thought to be the Welsh, but actually a whole load of tribes) when the Romans left, to fight off the Picts (a wild people believed to be from Scotland, though no trace of them remains). The English mercenaries did the job and beat the Picts off, but then they thought what a nice place Britain was and saw how weak the natives were and sent for their families and kinsfolk, who duly arrived, whereupon they began conquering the place for themselves, driving the British into the far south west (Cornwall and Devon, once known as south Wales), forcing some to take ship to Britanny (northern France) and forcing others back into what is now Wales in the west and Cumbria (which means Wales) and Dumfries in the south of Scotland.

This traditional view sets the stage for the sort of nationalistic urges and resentments that can rear their heads from time to time. But in more recent times it would seem the evidence points to something very different to conquest - an orderly progression of settlement moving from the south and east to the west, and a mixing of the two peoples and their cultures through common habitation. The natives took the English language, tools and weapons (the English swords of the time were as well made and deadly as Samurai blades a thousand years later), the newcomers took on Christianity and the remnants of the Roman culture attached to it.

This second account totally undoes the traditional, Victorian view of things - a view which was as much generated by nationalist causes and a Romantic fascination with folkish things that was common in Europe as a whole - and which in Germany became later bound up in the ideas of the national socialists. It also undoes the idea of the English as some ravening horde intent on killing and enslaving and plundering.

Throughout almost the entirety of this settlement period though, there was no England as such. The place was made up of small kingdoms, in competition, trade and occasionally at war with one another. The local kingdom where I live was Mercia, which stretched across nearly the whole of the centre part of England - it bordered what is now Wales and guess what, this English kingdom was allied with the Welsh against the others. The last pagan king was the king of Mercia, Penda - a Welsh name.

The Vikings' arrival changed that picture - again the traditional view is that they slaughtered and plundered their way across the island; they certainly did some of that, but its notable that the English women preferred Viking men because they washed regularly! English men didnt wash regularly since becoming Christian, since washing was regarded as potentially sinful due to its associations with the Roman bath houses and what went on there. Again, whilst there was undoubtedly war, the Vikings settled down here as farmers in the north of England, as well as in Ireland (Wexford, Waterford and Dublin are Viking cities), the southwest of Wales (Milford Haven is a Viking placename) and in various places in Scotland.

We are a mixed up bunch in other words!

But the trouble really only starts with those other Vikings, the Normans. Their kings first ravaged England when William the Bastard defeated Harold Godwinson at Hastings, then over the following centuries went on to do the same to Wales, Scotland and Ireland. It is this period, starting in the early Middle Ages from which the trouble starts and by which the view of the English by their neighbours is made so poor - and it wasnt even the English that did it - it was the Normans! And, sad to say perhaps, it was the same bunch of bastards that were still ruling the place in later centuries that did more of the same - to the Scots, to the Welsh, most especially to the Irish - and would you believe it, to the English too.

As to the "Prince Of Wales" thing - it was a Norman trick, so I'm told, to force the Welsh to acknowledge a Norman as their rightful and legal overlord and to relegate Wales to a Norman fiefdom.

E
