The articles I read stated that McCain desperately needed to change minds in the final debates, and didn't.  Reading the posts in this thread seems to substantiate that.I don't think any Obama supporters switched to McCain as a result of the debate, or vice versa.

I watched this debate on ABC rather than PBS, where I had watched the previous debates, and ABC used a split screen quite extensively which was very bad for McCain. When McCain was speaking and thought the camera was on him he was on his game and clearly was doing very well. However his behavior while Obama was speaking was troubling. It seemed dismissive and at times downright condescending. This may go down as another debate like the 1960 Kennedy Nixon debate with the perception of who won being determined by how you watched the debate.

I had the same reaction to the split screen.

Ok,  am I the only one who fell asleep during this thing????  I woke up a few times and it was the same old same old.  Other than McCain confusing me when he mentioned Palin, there was really nothing new I heard.

Which is why the McCain campaign has been complaining today about people checking facts.  They seem to be upset that so many people have corrected some of their "facts".

I would have loved to have seen my girl, Hillary whip McCain's ass too.  If she had only divorced Bill.

I still think Hillary is the Anti-Christ and can't tell ya how glad I am she's not even up for vote.

Just FYI, FactCheck.org has posted it's rundown of all the claims made during the debate. (No surprise that McCain was "The Biggest Liar.")

Rich, didn't he crash 5 of those jet fighters?

McCain was not a fighter pilot.   He was an attack pilot.  And believe me, the aviators think there is a big difference.

McCain allowed an AD-4 Skyraider to get outside the minimum flight requirements (too slow in a turn) and crashed that one.  He crashed a T-2 trainer on the way to the Army/Navy game. He was shot down in an A-4 Skyhawk when he flew below the safe altitude required in that threat environment.  He was sitting in an A-4 on the deck of USS Forrestal when a giant fire erupted due to mishandled ordnance.

He also flew an AD-4 too low and high some power lines. He got that one back to the boat.

So, yeah. He is sort of an ace for the bad guys.

Walt

The other blunder (and the one which means the most to me as a woman) I thought he made was talking about abortion and actually using his hands to quote the 'health' of women on this issue. Looking right at Obama then back to the camera then to make the quote sign "Senator Obama is very concerned about the "health" of women" was quite insulting to me. Again, like that is some horrible quality to possess. To me that said a whole lot about what he really thinks of women.

That was a major blunder alright, but mainly, I think, because people didn't get what he meant. I believe, at least, he was referring to the tactic of writing laws with a "health of the mother" exception that, in effect, facilitate abortion on demand because they leave "health" open to just about any interpretation (hence the quotes), not because he really believes that circumstance affecting the life and well-being of the mother should not be considered.

Any one of which would have seen anyone whose daddy was not an Admiral taken off active flight status.

I guess it is good to be the admiral's son then, huh?

I bet they called it "aggressive spirit," or some such, in the paperwork.  Or maybe, "in an effort to evade ground fire."

General reply -

I decided to listen to this debate on the radio rather than watch it on TV.  The anger and condescending attitude in Senator McCain's voice were obvious whenever he spoke to Senator Obama.  He does not have control of his temper and that is a major character flaw in a leader.

Senator Obama remains calm and respectful even when being personally attacked in the debates.  He is a man in control of himself and his reactions, one of the many reasons I respect and admire him.

McCain's voting record on women's issue is abysmal and speaks volumes. For women who have actually read his voting record, the sound bite is just more proof of his stance women and for those who haven't read nor will read his record, the blunder is simply offensive and he said nothing to indicate that he thought the life or well-being of a woman should be considered. He smirked and he mocked. He put his foot in his mouth, then kept it there. He is accountable for what he 'said' and how he said it ... not what he meant to say. But hey, if he is comfortable alienating up to %55 of the voting public, that's his choice. Too bad he doesn't want women to have any choices.

I can appreciate the hurt and outrage that gaff caused, and I'm truly sorry for it.

But if someone does not think that the life or well-being of the woman should be considered, it follows that when continuing a pregnancy would result in the death of the mother she should be made as comfortable as possible until her moment of passing and then immediately be cut open to take the baby.

I would be surprised if you seriously believe that McCain holds such a view.

No reason for you to be sorry. You didn't say it.

I believe that would be the natural conclusion that one would have to make. But it's not just life, it's also reproductive health. You run the risk of forcing a delivery at the expense of that reproductive health (perhaps due to something like ectopic pregnancy, Trisomy 13 in some case or some other potentially fatal or threatening issue.)

(Kirata, I hope you don't mind, but I've edited your post without changing the context so as to avoid TOS violations and risk getting these posts pulled.)

Well, you'll have to be surprised then I'm afraid. What other conclusion can I draw given what he said?  It's women's 'health' that he takes exception to in this regard or rather, that 'health' is an ambiguous term. I just can't buy that he gave serious thought to what the term 'health' means to women. Reproductive health and yes, life, is, generally, what most women are going to think of in this regard. I don't think anyone is going to confuse 'health' with something like stretch marks or a flabby middle in terms of 3rd trimester procedures which was the issue on the table at the time. We're not talking cosmetics here .. we're talking 3rd trimester procedures, most of which are going to be an agonizing decision for any woman to have to make and it's responded to with flippancy and mockery. Unacceptable. Simply, unacceptable.

Effectively transforming the woman into a living incubator.

I have to wonder what he thinks of us after our incubatory usage is over!
