You know..it is refreshing..an Honest Politician who admits he may have to raise taxes a little, so why is that so scary to people. At 55 I have heard more than one candidate say I will cut taxes, cut them for this group, cut them for that group, increase spending on this , that and the other but stop wasteful spending, a chicken in every pot and a pot in every home. Rarely have I heard I will Raise Taxes and start moving us out of Debt to other countries, that we are going to have to tighten our belts and dig a little deeper to get out of the mess we have been making for ourselves over the past 2 decades but we will make it. BUT. That is what it is going to take. Just like every one of us has had to tighten our budgets and maybe not be so quick to race off and buy the newest , greatest , latest thing, so our government is going to have to do the same thing. Do I like it? No. But we can't keep spending what we don't have coming in. Year after year the US has forgiven debt from countries that we helped to rebuild, we have poured Foreign Aid out and sent bushels of money to other countries where famine, disaster, illness have occurred without every wondering where that money is coming from, whose lives we are harnessing into a massive debt. Sometimes that money has been in actual cash and loans, but it has also been in the form of personnel, military aid etc. It seems at times that we are more eager and more responsive to others than to those here at home. Oh trust me, I am not discounting those who reach into their own pockets and send money and goods to those in need or who lend their efforts to helping out. But you will see more stores participating in donations for Aids in Africa than Aids here in America, a disease that is not limited to gays, but has it's fastest growing sector among women and teens. Sex should not be a death sentence, but while big pharm sends medications over seas gratis and gets big tax credits here for doing so, we have an awful lot of people in this country who can't afford the medications that are being sent over seas. If it were not for the efforts of the Lions Club and the Shriners there are kids who would die before they could get medical care, or have to do without glasses and hearing aids. Master's company just changed insurance companies. I am STILL not on his insurance though we are legally married. I doubt I ever will be unless they change the rules on Pre-existing conditions. I would be covered, and they would accept the pre-exisiting as I had coverage prior , but the premiums, copays and deductbiles made it highly unlikely that they would pay out ANYTHING until 8 months had passed. TG we don't have kids. There are a LOT of us here on CM in the same positions, more than a few with permanent disabilities that limit our ability to work. 4 words. Try to get hired. Friend of mine was downsized, he's a programmer and has a service dog. So far 30 companies later there is always a reason they hired someone else. Shall we just let him fade into the background or keep the Federal Programs and State programs that can help him become employed again. If we do that then it means we have to fund those programs and while Bush was real nice about giving us all those tax cuts and stimulius checks, Programs such as Vocational Rehabilitation and Education had their budgets CUT drastically, Social Security hasn't kept up with inflation and there are more than a few elderly who were not CEO's who can't afford, food, meds, rent and utilitiess in the same month. They live well BELOW the poverty line and earn less than illegal aliens from the system they paid into. 1000$ a month translates into 0.76 cents an hour to live on or 9$ a 12 hour day, can you do it? Why can't Johnny read? Well he can't afford glasses, can't get the special needs teachers he might need, sits in a classroom that is over crowded 40+ students in some areas because Federal Funds to states to build schools, buy books and hire teachers have been cut. States recieve money from the federal government to help in medicaid, crime prevention, libraries, education, public services such as mental health and public health, National Guard, to aid with rebuilding infrastructures like bridges, Dams and levees. If the Fed isn't funded by Taxes, it can't pass those funds along and the choices become at the State level..cut the program..or raise state income taxes and sales taxes. Obama is honest when he says we need to raise Taxes. It isn't to my liking that it is targeted to those earning a certain amount of money. But here's the kicker.. as for those who think that someone earning BELOW the poverty line owes no tax..ftake a look at the IRS itself for 2007 taxes: http://www.irs.gov/formspubs/article/0,,id=164272,00.html Tax credits are wonderful, so are tax shelters, cuts, defferred taxes et al. But we do have to pay for our government, we have to take care of our people and we need to fund our programs. Most of all we NEED to stop holding a Fire Sale on this country and it's government through the borrowing of money from foriegn countries based on the labor of our citizens, labor that has been outsourced to the Countries LENDING US THE MONEY. poenkitten
