I use capital "I" when referring to myself as I just cannot butcher the language that much, but I also use capitals when referring to my Lady - Milady, my Lady, She, Her, etc.

I do it as a sign of respect for my Lady, though She has given me no direction in that regard.

Over the years, i have noticed that soem Dommes do not like me using the lower case when referring to myself and the upper case when referring to them.  Others do want this.  Is there any precedents or protocol i should follow?

For the love of all things holy, PLEASE use Standard English capitalization, grammar, and punctuation.  Pick up copies of the Chicago Style Manual and Strunk and White if you need them to accomplish this.  Do it in every email, post, or journal entry unless specifically instructed to do otherwise by your domina and only do otherwise for your domina (as opposed to using non-Standard capitalization in a public forum).

When I begin to talk to someone through email or chat, one of the first things I tell them, just to clear up air is that they can use regular, correct grammar until they feel the need to start addressing me with capitalization or ask me what I prefer to be called (Miss, Ma'am, Mistress yadayada). I love how important and special it makes me feel when they make their own choice to afford me respect as a Domme and I love how they're "giving in" and offering at least some submission to me. It shows that I've inspired them to be what they want to be.

I do not think of a submissive as less than I am and therefore I get a bit of a red flag when someone writes me and uses... i... rather than I.  If they walk in thinking less of themselves or thinking I think less of them, they are typically not my type.  I see us as equals, just different.  I value people and wish to be valued and respect is respect.  Now... having said that... I have used this in a dynamic sense and have used it to help someone get around in different chats and such... just as an example of different things with different people.  But... I do away with it as soon as the lesson if you will, is over!

I know my red flag is judgmental and opinionated, but it is just based on my experience mostly online and I can be judgmental and opinionated. lol  Mostly I am very casual about most things, I just like being in control and spanking tail ends... so sue me... hehe

*fast reply*

For our household, when someone is just starting out, we don't worry about -which- they use. What we -do- worry about is the content of what they have to say. If the content is fine, then we can work on the rules of grammar and the protocols of address later.

One thing I -do- watch for, though, is whether the individual has either read my profile or notices how I sign the an email. If, when they write me back, they use one of the forms that I've said I prefer, or address me using the form I signed the email with, all good. If they don't bother, and insist on using terms that I've said I prefer to not have used during initial conversations, well... it does count against them.

It's funny, Lockit - I think I know exactly what you mean, and I agree with you.  Yet, there is something superior/inferior about a D/s relationship, isn't there?  I'm just at a loss as to how to articulate why it isn't, at bottom, about a relationship between two unequal people.  Probably because, at bottom, in any given D/s relationship the ways and extents of superior/inferior are mutally agreed upon.  Or should be, anyway.

Whatever. Who cares?  Like I say, I agree with you.

The fact that the sub *chooses* to be unequal is what makes it equal. (Yes, I know: that makes almost as much sense as your sig line. )

LOL Venatrix...

Peon... let's just say... I like a man who is confident... who can match wits with me and surpass me in area's... but he likes to kneel and pamper me and loves me for all I am or am not.  He see's me and I see him and both our worth... but... he does that kneel thing that turns me on and him too.  Who cares where it comes from or why or how it reasons out... it just reasons out well.  And stop challenging me when I have a headache damn it! lol  You know my domme brain... give me a break! hehe

Oh Lockit, I'm not challenging.  I'm only asking!  Mind you, in saying what I did just now, I started giving myself a headache thinking about it.  And headaches don't help relationships!

Isn't that what I just said?!  (Except I said it better, naturally).

As for my sig line: I believe most people readily understand it in its full depth, which is why no-one's ever mailed me to ask about it.

Hmmm.  Don't make me publish our private correspondence where you confess that your sig line is BS.  That carefully crafted edifice of insouciant erudition will come crumbling down.

Edited to add:  *My* words are bigger than your words.  Nyah, nyah, nyah.

When chatting with my Sir online I keep it in lower case except when I'm referring to Him. Here, on CM I cap when reference is made to Him.... just a sign of respect.

I put far more importance on use of the language properly than I do proving your position to me through your use of spelling and capitalization. You are contacting me, therefore I know you are submissive. Now, your job is to show me you are an intelligent submissive worthy of my time, which you are not going to do if you cannot type the language correctly. Until you are actually in a relationship with a Domme and she specifies that she cares one way or the other, it is always better to err on the side of proper usage. They can correct you easily to abandon that, but trying to impress upon someone that you do in fact know how to use it properly when you have had a bad first impression is harder to do.

My 2 cents

Aw, you've ruined it now . . .

It worked, though. That line was my version of Cinderella's slipper, and I was Prince Charming trying it with every lady in the land of Dommenia.   I've just had my very first email asking what my sig line means and, lo, have I found my one, true Domme . . . .
