Status: offline 		"But" (in this sense) introduces an independent clause, and that's why you can begin a sentence with it.  (Same goes for "and," "for," and a few others.)  In fact, you can even begin a sentence with a conjunction that introduces a DEPENDENT clause.  "Because he was tired, he decided to sit down."  There's nothing ungrammatical about that.

See, as I said, people aren't taught very well.  They're taught grammar by lazy and ignorant schoolteachers who don't fully understand grammar themselves, and therefore invent little rules that don't have anything to do with reality, but simplify the process of grading pupils' work.

Status: offline 		My biggest grammar pet peeve is when I read one of these pet peeve threads and realize I've been doing something that is on someone else's pet peeve list. I hate that.

He used the word "bad" in his original sentence.  The bolded red is where DRH corrected it to "badly".

I kinda had the thought of this thread being a little tongue in cheek - that died a quick death.

My point about having to "learn" grammar in my senior English Lit class is that it was an "honors" class.  The other kids in that class were from -similar- socio-economic situations.  We were, basically, the smart kids.  We didn't have any rich kids and we didn't have any poverty kids.  We were maybe 60/40 white to black.  My 1st memory of any real grammar was from 4th, maybe 3rd grade.  Maybe I picked it up more easily, maybe I applied myself a little more.  I dunno* - too far back to really know.  But by the time we got to an honors level Eng Lit class in our senior year of HS, everyone one of us in that class should have had a thorough understanding of English grammar.  Doesn't seem like all that much to ask as every grade from 4th on taught some form of grammar.  Your mileage may vary.

Oh look: I just found another example we haven't touched on (or did I miss it?):

"...answers I get from those that are irritated by..."

those vs. who

It's always been my understanding (I think I will start using this preface a lot!) that you should use "who" when referring to people and "those" when referring to something else.
Thus, the sentance should read: "...answers I get from those WHO are irritated by...".

And I just remembered another one of those childish words used by news readers: big as opposed to large.  When the story reads "a big crane collapsed" I get the feeling it was written for the 6 year old crowd.  Doesn't it sound a bit more adult to say "a large crane collapsed"?

My thought on the word "badly" is that it sounds dumb and should not be used in intelligent conversation.  So instead of saying "why it bothers you so badly" I would go with "why it bother you so much".

And am I the only person who still clings to the silent "t" in "often" and cringes when when it is pronounced?

On the subject of large/big cranes how does this apply to crane flies. Is it still valid to say "Jesus that fucking crane fly was big." ?

True about the noun thing.  That's what happens when I'm multi-tasking late at night.  Adverbs modify adjectives, verbs, and other adverbs.

If you would've read it with the intent my little "correction" was given, it wasn't to be mean or school marm-like, thus the "giggles" and batting of eyelashes at you, as well as the smiley.  I was trying to be sweet when I made the little adjustment before someone of a "less gentle nature" came through with the magic red pen.
